Mark Felt dead at 95--should 'gate' die also?

Former FBI deputy associate director Mark Felt died Thursday. He was 'Deep Throat,' the key source for Bob Woodward's reporting on the Watergate scandal. For those younger readers who don't know, the Watergate complex at 2600 Virginia Avenue NW in DC is an upscale hotel and condo development. The DNC had offices there in 1972. Bob Dole still lives there, along with doubtless many other DC luminaries.

Anyway, ever since the Watergate scandal, reporters have been appending 'gate' to any and all political scandals, even when they have nothing to do with hotels, burglaries, or bugging. During the Clinton administration we had 'Travelgate' and 'Filegate.' When some Seattle councilpersons took big campaign contributions from a strip club owner, local reporters dubbed it 'Strippergate.'

'Strippergate' could not have been farther removed from Watergate. It was the opposite end of the country, it was thirty years later, and there was really no reason for the 'gate.' I wrote to the papers at the time and suggested that if they had to have a suffix, why not call it 'StripperMonica?' Younger readers would not have to puzzle over it, and at least to me, it was a lot catchier.

With the passing of Mark Felt, will the press finally bury the 'gate' suffix? My suggestion for a replacement remains 'Monica.' What is yours?

1. Or they could report the news unbiased and without smart alecky comment and simply call them what they are: scandals! (or in many cases, blown out of proportion misunderstandings that hurt perfectly good public servants while the real crooks go unscathed)

2. I have always figured that 'gate' was a subtle and sneaky way to tinge every scandal with a little Republicanism.

This even though Nixon would be far to the left of at least most grassroots R's today. Nixon was pro-affirmative action, pro-national handgun ban, pro-planned economy (wage/price controls), and founded the EPA. Like many liberals today, he was also at least mildly anti-Semitic.

3. Seattle Times close to folding:

What will we do without them?

4. Nixon and Bush.

Both Leftist Republicans in Name Only. Both did terrible harm to the Republican Label.

As bad as Clinton was, as bad as Obama will be, they can't do, can't even dream of doing the damage to the Republican party that a Nixon and a Bush can do.

I voted third party. I didn't vote McCain. I know things are going to be bad but far worse would it have been for McCain to win and damage the Republican party like Nixon and Bush did.

You bet I am holding out for a Reagan. I still am. There are names out there that have such a potential (Palin being one of them). But if we get a Lefty in 2012 like we did in 2008 with McCain I will vote third party again.

Because as bad as the Democrats are, Nixon-Bush-McCain "RINOS" in the end do far more damage and the democrats win in the end because of them.
