Geoff Simpson's Dirty Politics (Part VI)

This is part six of a series, which will continue until Election Day, documenting all the lies and smears Geoff Simpson is selling the 47th district voters in a desperate attempt not to lose his job. You can read parts one, two, three, four, and five.

Earlier, I wrote about a lie perpetrated by Geoff Simpson in this campaign mailer:

That lie was his claim that Mark Hargrove is "running a campaign based on negative personal attacks," even though Hargrove has yet to bring up a single point about Simpson's checkered past.

There's another outright lie in the above mail piece. It says:

"Hargrove would get rolled by the special interests."

and

"[Hargrove's] running a campaign . . . funded by high rollers who don't share our values."

That couldn't be farther from the truth, and a check of the PDC records (as of 10/30/08) for both Simpson and Hargrove proves that.

To date, Geoff Simpson has raised $297,736.86. Mark Hargrove has raised $44,754.70.

Looking deeper into Simpson's fundraising, he's raised a mere $23,304 from individuals, meaning he's gotten a whopping $274,432.86 from lobbyists, PACs, unions, tribes, political parties, and big business. All of those groups are going to want something from Simpson if he wins. That's the definition of special interests. What's more, most of the donations from individuals are actually made by people who live outside of the district. In fact, Simpson has only raised $4,940 from individuals living in Auburn, Black Diamond, Covington, Kent, Maple Valley, Ravensdale, and Renton. And there are only 23 contributions made by these individuals.

That's right, the man who claims to be "protecting our community" has raised just $4,940, or 1.66% of his campaign total, from "regular people" in our community. He's only managed to convince 23 individuals, out of 120,000 living in the district, to give him their money.

And Simpson thinks who is going to get "rolled by the special interests?"

Hargrove, in contrast, has significantly more support from "regular people." He has raised $31,553.65 from individuals, which comprises 70.5 percent of his total. Hargrove has collected 233 contributions from individuals living in Auburn, Black Diamond, Covington, Kent, Maple Valley, Ravensdale, and Renton. Together, they have given his campaign $20,293.50.

Unless Simpson thinks your neighbors in Kent, Covington, and Auburn are "special interests," then this is yet another example of Simpson's win-at-all-costs, say-whatever-it-takes strategy in action. After 60% of the district voted against him in the primary, despite the fact that he spent over $110,000 beforehand, it's obvious he's scared, and is going to say whatever it takes to make sure he doesn't lose in November.
