SHOCKER: Sen. Biden-"Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be [VP]"

H/T: Drudge, and local conservative talk radio, as usual.

Uh...can Obama and the democrats say "Oh, crap"? Sen. Joe Biden has seemingly dug himself another hole of a gaff. Or maybe he's chewing on his foot again. ...Either way, I'm pretty sure that the following comments by the senator from Delware aren't all that comforting to the Obama campaign. Part of me wonders if Sen. Biden has been struggling with these thoughts, and for how long--and I am pretty sure that Obama has been struggling with these thoughts as well (unless he really, REALLY doesn't like Hillary...), and they could have grown exponentially troubling the second that Sen. McCain picked Gov. Sarah Palin as his veep choice. I was nearly worried for them. ...almost.

Biden: Hillary a Better Pick Than Me

ABC News' Matthew Jaffe Reports: Barack Obama's vice-presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., Wednesday said that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, might have been a better pick for the position than him.

At a rally in Nashua, New Hampshire, a man in the audience told Biden how glad he was that Obama picked him over Hillary "not because she's a woman, but because look at the things she did in the past."

"Make no mistake about this," Biden responded. "Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Let's get that straight. She's a truly close personal friend, she is qualified to be president of the United States of America, she's easily qualified to be vice president of the United States of America and quite frankly it might have been a better pick than me. But she's first rate, I mean that sincerely, she's first rate, so let's get that straight."

Spokesman Ben Porritt offered this response from the McCain camp: "Barack Obama's most important decision of this election and Biden - the candidate he selects - suggests himself that he wasn't the right man for the job and that Hillary Clinton would have been a better choice. Biden certainly has a credible viewpoint on this."

1. Sounds to me like Biden has been told that he may have to go so that Hillary can take his spot. They're floating the idea out there to see how it feels and to judge potential reaction.

If the polls keep slowly creeping up for M/P and down for O/B, I give Biden 2 weeks tops, especially if they can't find any *real* dirt on Palin.

2. crickets chirping - If this move happens, it will be within the next few weeks. It would be a bit of a shock, but wouldn't surprise me if Hillary took Biden's place. The only reason they would have is because it is looking more and more like they won't win. Even the London odds have flipped in favor of McCain as of today - remember two weeks ago when they were 61-39 in favor of O-Drama ?

3. Good catch Cydney. I've long been of the opinion that if the Democrats want a chance to win, they have to go running to the Clintons.
