Penn. Turnpike Is Sold for $12.8 Billion

May 19, 2008, 1:51 pm A consortium led by Citigroup and Spain's Abertis Infraestructuras won the bidding war to run the Pennsylvania Turnpike with a $12.8 billion offer, Gov. Edward Rendell said on Monday.

The group, which includes Australia's Babcock & Brown, beat out a rival group that includes Goldman Sachs and Transurban Group.

The deal is the largest ever privatization of a toll road in the United States, as infrastructure investments become increasingly in vogue.

1. We can not even get a GOP candidate to support privatizing the ferry system and that is much more likely than 520. I am with you though. Privatizing 520 and I90 bridges would be great.

2. Gee, can't we sell the Alaskan Way Viaduct to Seattle's Chinese Sister City? Have them dig a big tunnel and set up a $2 toll!

3. Which is more like china??? Government run monopolies or private toll roads?

4. Just privatize the whole highway system. Tolls every five minutes......sounds good. But with gas hitting $6 a gallon by the end of summer I have an idea congestion will soon be a thing of the past. Than nobody (private companies) will be interested. Sell it quick!
