Starting Out

Thank you for the ease of entry into your blog.

For the record, I am thinking of running against Darcy Burner and Dave Reichert. A lifelong Democrat now living in Sammamish, I have contributed to both the McCain and Clinton campaigns this year.

I am a lawyer admitted to practice law and licensed in and before Illinois and Washington State, the US Supreme Court, and many US Courts of Appeals. An American Bar Foundation Fellow, I have been ranked in the past in a peer-reviewed publication called "Best of the Best - 2000-02, 2002-2004, 2004-2006 - IT Advisors" which includes around the top 25 worldwide, and in the "Guide to the World's Leading Information Technology Advisors." A military policeman from 1969 to 1971, I was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. I have practice extensively in the information technology, intellectual property, and antitrust fields. I am also a Realtor.

I am a firm believer in free enterprise, subject to some important guarantees that our companies face level playing fields wherever they compete. As an antitrust lawyer for many years, I have reviewed companies and their competitive environments. Through this work, I am a firm believer that government intervention and intermeddling ends up hurting the smaller competitor more often than not. Some of our laws remain archaic and need change. Others are handled from political rather than economic perspectives in ways that harm our US industry. Part of my approach will be to bring these points home in an effort to make our country a better place for our domestic companies to operate.

I am a staunch supporter of all our Washington-based companies who compete from Washington and the United States. They need more support and less government intrusion in many ways. They also need to be strongly assisted in Washington, something I pledge to do for every constituent.

I am against the current opposition of corporate America. We have a need for some regulation, such as our securities laws. But we should not browbeat and cajole the corporate members of our Washington economic engine. Without our corporate strength, we become less than an also-ran in the US and world scene. With them, we are important players in today's and tomorrow's economy.

Comments would obviously be welcome.

Best wishes,

Cliff Potter

1. Darcy Burner is under the mistaken notion that she too has been annointed to this position. The fact that she has no challengers of her own has made her arrogance suffocating. Be aware that going against her will reward you with the wrath of her "nutroots".

While I am a Dave fan, it would be wonderful to hear him debate someone with common sense credibility, something Darcy and her supporters sorely lack.

Good luck.

ps I DO live in the 8th. Back in the mid-80's, before there was anything up there, we lived on the Plateau.

2. That is going to depend on your politics. I really liked Jennifer Dunn. Now that she has past away and Dave Reichert has replaced her I support him. But if you have a stronger more conservative message I would be happy to talk to you about this. The 8th district has a strong business mentality. If you come out with a strong pro-business message you can go far.

3. You don't say anything I can't agree with whole-heartedly. But I'm so out of touch that I don't know what district I live in. That's partly because last summer I moved from Renton to West Seattle, and though I changed my address online, the voter registration folks never sent me a new card telling me my district, precinct, and polling place. Doesn't much matter because I haven't found a politician I'd vote for in years anyway except for Rob McKenna. And now maybe you. Keep me posted.

4. As an employer, I just got a flyer from L&I stating they were promulgating rules regarding working outside in hot weather.

Rules that will tell us employers to tell the employees that if they stay out in the sun too long without water, they could get heat stroke. Huh?

And you want to run as a Democrat? To teach me how to teach my adult employees that too much sun could be bad for their health. Isn't that a little strange?

5. I propose a pro-business platform. This means that these are probably among many that need changing, as I indicate in my post.

6. Hi Cliff,
Sound Politics, though it is for "politics around the Sound" is primarily posted by Republicans, though some of us who tend to vote Democrat are here. Just an fyi.
I live in Sammamish too and look forward to your message.
Good luck to you.
