Hollywood Just Doesn't Get It

Every week Drudge points to articles talking about the weekend box office. This week one of the films opening was "Stop Loss". (If you can't guess what the film was about based on the title, you aren't qualified to read Sound Politics.) It was typical lefty anti-war drivel. It (predictably) flopped at the office. The article bemoaned its fate in a particularly clueless and amusing way.

"Paramount wasn't expecting much because no Iraq war-themed movie has yet to perform at the box office."

At the risk of being redundant the author should have said that no ANTI-Iraq themed movies has yet to perform well. The article went on to say

"It's not looking good," a studio source told me before the weekend. "No one wants to see Iraq war movies. No matter what we put out there in terms of great cast or trailers, people were completely turned off. It's a function of the marketplace not being ready to address this conflict in a dramatic way because the war itself is something that's unresolved yet. It's a shame because it's a good movie that's just ahead of its time."

Personally I think that a heroic movie about the war would be a big smash hit. The marketplace is begging for the war to be addressed in a dramatic way. One where the Americans are the good guys, and we actually win. Huh. What a radical idea.

Where's The Duke when you really need him?

It doesn't have to be over the top, like the vietnam flick Green Berets. Just a straight up, good old fashioned, blow up the bad guys action flick. Yeah, even though the bad guys might be believers in the religion of peace.

Not gonna happen. The powers that be in Hollywood are simply not capable of achieving a realistic world view on this subject.

I love it when the lefty pundits claim that the only reason Hollywood doesn't make conservatively oriented pro-American movies is because there is no demand for such film making. That surely the studios are looking out for their own financial best interests and would produce such films. After all, don't they want to make money?

Again this is part of the total blindness of the left. Their staggering inability to acknowledge even the possibility of another point of view. Absolutely the ideologues in Hollywood would sacrifice potential profit to promote their "progressive" point of view. To the extent of slumping box office sales.

Just last week I saw a couple of crime dramas that made the point. In one the obvious murder suspect was a deranged street person. Naturally the actual murderer was a suburban family man. In the other the obvious murderer was desperate drug addict. The actual murderer was another suburban family man. Ohhh, the surprise twist. What a revelation. How unexpected. How revealing of the true sickness of our society.

What crap.

And they wonder why tv ratings are falling as quickly as box office receipts.

1. Stop Loss

" "It's not looking good," a studio source told me before the weekend. "No one wants to see Iraq war movies. No matter what we put out there in terms of great cast or trailers, people were completely turned off. It's a function of the marketplace not being ready to address this conflict in a dramatic way because the war itself is something that's unresolved yet. It's a shame because it's a good movie that's just ahead of its time." "

Good grief. This yahoo is saying 'America is too dumb to "get it"... come spend your money on my movie'. Note to Paramount studio source: Go screw yourself... oh wait! You already did.

Why Americans aren't buying the recent Iraq War movies

2. You'd think that the success of a television series like '24' should tell Hollywood something. A show where the main character has no problems breaking the rules in order to save american lives.

The film adaptations of the Tom Clancy novels have done well at the box office, even though the last one (Sum of all Fears) was obviously rewritten to not alienate muslims.

When was the last time you saw a movie that portrayed our intelligence agencies in a favorable light? The CIA/NSA are always made to look like some evil right wing political tool to aid a corrupt Republican administration.

3. In times long past it was not uncommon for actors to have served in the military, Audie Murphy being the obvious example.
