John Iwasaki of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported yesterday (Wednesday 12/12): "Rep. Jim McDermott supported House resolutions this fall to recognize the Islamic holiday of Ramadan and the festival of Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. But the Washington Democrat drew the line at Christmas. McDermott voted Tuesday against a resolution to recognize the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith. It is time for a new exit strategy, one that removes Jim McDermott from office. The time has come for McDermott to go. Of course, this is the same McDermott who opposes our troops and opposes a victory strategy in the war against Islamic terrorism. And this is the same unethical McDermott who puts himself above the law and sees nothing wrong with wiretapping political opponents. So when McDermott opposes this resolution on Christmas, it's hardly surprising.
One of the most important issues facing the American people is the overall question of a positive vision for our future - this includes improving the moral climate in our country, protecting religious freedom, curtailing judicial activism, keeping government out of the health care system, strengthening families and education, promoting ethical behavior and civility in public life, protecting our constitutional liberties of free speech and self-defense and the right to life, and - indeed, through all these providing our children with a better future. Like many liberals, McDermott struggles with the question of "moral values" and "faith voters," but he really has no clue.
In McDermott's failed legal efforts to defend his unethical behavior, one of the largest contributors to McDermott's legal defense fund is Majdi Daher, who contributed $3,000 in July. Daher is an activist with the Arab American Community Coalition, which believes "malicious harassment [is] the least of the Arab community's worries - the United States government [is] a bigger thorn in the Arab and Muslim communities' sides." With regard to McDermott's wiretapping of political opponents, Daher told the Seattle P-I he believes "Congressman McDermott is an extremely great patriot." In a recent email message to his supporters regarding his ethics violations and his $800,000+ in fines and legal fees, McDermott said: "I have raised a significant amount of money to pay for legal expenses. However, the amount that has been set aside will not cover all costs and fees." In the same message, McDermott also stated: "With right-wing Republicans devoting so much effort to punishing me, I must be doing something right!"
No need for Republicans to do "negative campaigning" in Seattle - McDermott provides his own "negative attacks" against himself.
