Steve Beren says McDermott should pay fine and resign

On the floor of the House of Representatives on June 28, far left Congressman Jim McDermott said that Vice President Dick Cheney "should resign or face impeachment." But ironically, despite his hyperbole directed at the Vice President, McDermott himself is in severe legal jeopardy.

In May, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that McDermott was acting unlawfully when he released to the press an illegally taped 1996 phone call of Republican leaders. McDermott's unlawful action was all the more serious because, at the time, he was at the time a member of the House Ethics Committee. As such, the appeals court ruled, McDermott had "voluntarily accepted a duty of confidentiality" and therefore had no right to disclose the tape to journalists.

McDermott, who now owes perhaps as much as $1,000,000 in fines, damages, and legal costs, announced on July 6 that he was taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Steve Beren, the 2006 Republican Congressional candidate against McDermott and likely 2008 candidate, described McDermott's latest appeal as a "futile stalling tactic" that demonstrated McDermott's "arrogance and hypocrisy."

"This is just a futile stalling tactic," Beren said. "McDermott is an embarassment to the people of the Seventh Congressional District. He should cut his losses, pay the fine, and resign his seat in Congress. If ever there were someone who should pursue an 'exit strategy,' it's Jim McDermott."
