I was very saddened to learn just now that former Seattle City Councilman Charlie Chong has passed away. It was only a couple of months ago that he talked with me for three hours one night at a West Seattle coffee shop. Some people had urged me to run for City Council this year, and I was considering whether or not to do so, seeking the opinion of Charlie and others I respected.
He was generous with his time and advice, vibrant and full of encouragement. I haven't always agreed with him, including that evening. But although he felt I was too conservative on some of the issues, he was supportive and gave me valuable advice.
After we concluded our talk, I received a call on my cell from his wife, Mary Pearson, who was quite worried since Charlie had not yet returned home. I assured her he was on his way and would be home soon.
A couple of weeks ago, at the King County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner, I learned that Charlie was ill. I regret that I did not get to visit him one more time.
Though I decided not to run for City Council, I learned a lot from Charlie that evening. God bless his soul. His friends and family, especially Mary, will be in our prayers tonight.
