Hacking Democracy

Some very interesting stuff in this HBO documentary, with a disturbing demonstration of a voting tabulation card hacked to produce desired results, regardless of ballots run through the scanner. Stalin would be pleased ...

Remember, your tax dollars are paying for this kind of voting security.

1. Yeah, but they have to break a seal and undo the card with a screw in order to get at the card. If there are not proper safeguards in place, cheating will always be possible. The same is true for paper ballots that are left overnight in an unsecured location or without bipartisan observers. One could remove or otherwise deface paper ballots.

There's an irrational fear of a lot of voter technology, but it's not the technology that's dangerous, it's the protocols set up surrounding the people that causes problems. One simple technique to make everything more secure is to require valid ID at the polls. That alone would thwart many would be fraudulent voters.

And with the shift to all mail ballots, there are other larger problems that don't even exist where there are e-voting machines.

The biggest danger as always are Democrats signing up people to vote at the last minute with provisionals, etc. as happened at the King County Building in 2004.
