Big Government, Big "Savings"?

There is an article in the PI discussing the King County Councils brave (my description) move to shave $24 million from the 2007 budget.

Now, while this sounds like a lot of money, it does fall short of being respectable. The budget is $500 million more than 2006, making this "savings" only 4.8% of the increase.

The total budget is $3.86 BILLION. The savings is .0062% of the whole budget amount. BIG DEAL.

The King County Council shaved $24 million from the 2007 budget proposed by County Executive Ron Sims in approving a $3.86 billion spending plan Monday.

"We're providing the same level of service but with less dollars," Councilwoman Jane Hague, R-Bellevue, said before the unanimous vote for the budget.

.0062% "less dollars". With elected representatives looking after the peoples money so well, who needs to worry?

1. That would probably just about cover the massive raises they gave themselves today on the council. Wish I got a 27k increase every year like this King County executive has done!

2. I forgot to mention - the $500 million dollars is a 14.8% INCREASE in spending, but due to the heroic "stand" by the council, they were able to avoid the 15.6% increase.

Ron probably got the raise to compensate him for emotional distress for having to use used furniture in the new county building.
