Democrat candidate shoots stuffed elephant in his own ad

Democrat Estakio Beltran shoots a stuffed elephant in his video ad. He makes it clear that he is symbolically shooting Republicans. He is running for the 4th-district seat in Congress being vacated by Doc. Hastings - central Washington.

Breitbart

According to the Seattle Times the shooting only bothers conservatives. Candidate Beltran was not available to defend his actions in the ad and his judgement in running it.

The video opens with the blue-jeans wearing Beltran posing with hands on hips alongside an arid landscape by a country road. "They call me a long shot. They say I can't win in this district," Beltran says. "But what happens to an elephant when it stands around, doing nothing, for too long?"

The camera pans to an elephant pinata, and then back to Beltran, who shoulders a pump-action shotgun and blasts the Republican Party symbol in the rear. "My name is Estakio Beltran," the candidate says, racking the shotgun. "And I approved this message."

Beltran then rides off on a burro toward a sign pointing toward the U.S. Capitol.

The ad may have been intended as humorous, but some conservative websites are questioning the message, arguing Democrats would flip out if a GOP candidate blasted away at a symbol of the Democratic Party.

Beltran must not know the record of the Republican-led US House of Representatives. They have passed lots of bills through the normal process of committee hearings. But when they send them to Harry Reid's Senate Harry stuffs them.

But Beltran is very sensitive about handguns and rifles:

Last month, Beltran criticized Republican candidate Clint Didier for giving away two pistols and a rifle to publicize his campaign and his support of the Second Amendment.

Beltran questioned the sensitivity of Didier's gun giveaway coming after the June 5 shooting at Seattle Pacific University that left one person dead and two wounded. He told the Tri-City Herald he was a supporter of gun rights but "sensitive to the grief" surrounding recent shootings.

Didier didn't take a shot at his opponent. Beltran did. The ad is currently on YouTube

1. Wow, over two weeks with no new postings, I honestly thought Sound Politics was dead. I guess we shall see. Maybe all of the authors are getting tired of the non-stop abuse by rude leftist commenters who try to take over every post with their invective.

2. Not surprised by this coming from a Democrat. They are no longer a party but more of a personality cult.

Check out this video from Chicago.

African-Americans who say that Obama is the worst president ever. Why let the border sprawl out of control letting millions of new people in to the country with diseases, crimes and other security issues? Will these millions ever make it to taxpaying status, or will they just remain in the the shadows and be another burden on our economy?

And the African-Americans have a great point. Why let millions of new potential citizens stream across the border when we have problems in our own communities with people born and raised here?

Obama has lost control of the presidency. He should resign.

3. Katomar@1, yes, I'm sure all that abuse is just too painful for the sensitive SoundPolitics bloggers.

But I'll try making a comment that's on-topic: I think that ad is idiotic and irresponsible. Indeed his campaign pulled it several days ago, but apparently it's still the big story of the month on this blog.

4. Bruce @3: You make my point for me. SP bloggers are not too sensitive, it's just that snyde, pointless comments such as yours take up the ether and waste discussion time.

5. Indeed his campaign pulled it several days ago

Under duress, after it was outed and after he was soundly criticized by Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords.

The fact that he did it at all with little criticism from local lefties speaks loudly to typical and expected hypocrisy, as does the utter silence from national loud lefties on the disgusting recent and continued gun violence in one of the most gun controlled cities in the country: Chicago.

January 2014:

A study published in the latest issue of the academic journal Applied Economics Letters took on many of the claims made regularly by advocates of stricter gun laws. The study determined that nearly every claim made in support of stronger restrictions on gun ownership is not supported by an exhaustive analysis of crime statistics.

The study, "An examination of the effects of concealed weapons laws and assault weapons bans on state-level murder rates," conducted by Quinnipiac University economist Mark Gius, examined nearly 30 years of statistics and concluded that stricter gun laws do not result in a reduction in gun violence. In fact, Gius found the opposite - that a proliferation of concealed carry permits can actually reduce incidents of gun crime.

August 2013:

The Study "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide? A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence," ust appeared in Volume 30, Number 2 of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy (pp. 649-694).

The findings of two criminologists -- Prof. Don Kates and Prof. Gary Mauser -- in their exhaustive study of American and European gun laws and violence rates, are telling:

Nations with stringent anti-gun laws generally have substantially higher murder rates than those that do not. The study found that the nine European nations with the lowest rates of gun ownership (5,000 or fewer guns per 100,000 population) have a combined murder rate three times higher than that of the nine nations with the highest rates of gun ownership (at least 15,000 guns per 100,000 population).

Yep, It's still a pleasure watching you lefties get every single thing you wanted! Keep it up!

7. "Didier didn't take a shot at his opponent. Beltran did."

Beltran didn't take a shot at Hastings. He shot at an immobile, inanimate object which had long outlasted its welcome.

Ok, I guess I'll have to admit you were right about that one. :-)

8. Beltran clearly jumped the shark on that ad - being insensitive, politically incorrect and bigoted toward Republicans with the ad. Being that this race is in Eastern WA -a conservative district, that does not speak well for his prospects.

I understand that the level of discourse is less than it used to be, but why is that a reason to ignore so many National crises/scandals on SP ? state issues only can get boring. Is it the lack of civility by primarily leftist commenters who have not made themselves known on this post so far the problem ? Yeah, they have become more extremist and have taken on characteristics of the Taliban or the Palestinians. A certain troll who signs in as a blind doctor is at the top of that list - maybe he has gone to Gaza to defend the Palestinians and find human shields (pls excuse the sick humor in the effort to stir it up)

9. Beltran didn't take a shot at Hastings. He shot at an immobile, inanimate object which had long outlasted its welcome.

Sarah Palin used an actual target - "an immobile, inanimate object" as a metaphor for the GOP to "target" (as in focus upon very directly) in political races. She didn't even "take a shot".

She was vilified.

Nice try.

How silly of you, Ron. Here, you can familiarize yourself with the abject failure that is the Republican-led House of Representatives.

My, that's some record Bachmann has. The poor woman can't even get a post office named. Too funny! Little wonder it's the least productive Congress in history. There are simply too many insane TeaBirchers like Bachmann and Goehmert running loose. You do know, don't you, that adding Didier to the list wingnut wackjobs in the House isn't going to help at all in dialing back the House Insane-O-Meter from redlining?

Nice try.

However, I want to talk about TARGETS:

Poor Ruth Bader Ginsburg - the court session is over and she is now THE most high value target of the power hungry fearful left. Liberals want Ruthie to "die quickly" ... or at least before November.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of the more important liberal litigators and jurists of her generation. She has been trailblazer on the issue of women's legal rights and a powerful voice for progressive causes as a justice on the highest US court in the land.

And she must retire. Right now. While we're at it, Stephen Breyer should retire too.

The far left is worse than the old Mafia, the drug cartels and KGB when it comes to people that have out-lived their usefulness to THEM.

Watch your back, Ruthie!

12. Counterpoint -
"Little wonder it's the least productive Congress in history."

With a big assist from the most extremist, divisive, racist and malevolent President in modern US History, who is too ideological and therefore incapable of compromise.

It would be a benefit to a majority to have Harry Reid become the minority leader in the Senate- he is another bigoted old white guy extremist who is getting more senile every day and the main reason that Congress is so non-productive. There are 40+ bills (excluding repeals of Obamacare) from the House, not acted upon by Reid.

A GOP majority in the Senate will at least lessen the effect of the extremist pro-Taliban, pro-Palestinian and pro-Muslim Brotherhood cabal that occupy the White House. They represent the invasion of locusts to this country. Gohmert is in the House and will continue to have a voice there to fend off the Obama cabal and Bachmann is retiring - she's was a bit off the deep end but meant well.

14. Conservatives/Republicans need to pick their battles more wisely in a blue state. Didier could not get away as easily with his approach in Western Washington as he can in Doc Hastings' district.

The GOP also needs to vet their candidates better here and all over & modify their strategy to produce winning results (i.e. reach out to Hispanics and the Black community). More of the same old nstrategy will produce more of the same old results.

Rag(e)s, I wasn't defending advertisements based around shooting; I think all of them are in bad taste. I was mocking Washington State's awesomely do-nothing Congressman, Rep. "Doc" (not a real doctor, not his real name) Hastings, who didn't let his "Contract with America" pledge of 1994 prevent him from keeping his seat in the other Washington at a solid 98.6 F for eight long and uneventful years after he had promised to quit.

Other than lie to his fellow Washingtonians to get elected, what has Hastings done? That's the point Beltran was addressing, however offensively.

Speaking of funny, I see that the Texas wingnut AG wants to sue the president too. More evidence of Republican's new found love of frivolous lawsuits. Geez, I thought you guys hated those things. Try racist against whites or anyone who has differing views. Who plays the race card more than any other president and enlists Al Sharpton - another racist in his constant campaign propaganda. ODR - call it what you want - your blind moniker is fitting for your closed mindedness and intolerance of differing views. Eric Holder is called upon to obfuscate and call anyone who opposes he and Obama a racist - nah, he's not a racist either. Yours and Eric's are mediocre attempts to construct a straw man argument.

Agreed. Where's the controversy? He was wrong, he should be ridiculed and perhaps even forced to step aside, end of story. Still, I have yet to see any "elephant hunting licenses"...

@11: Poor Ruth Bader Ginsburg - the court session is over and she is now THE most high value target of the power hungry fearful left. Liberals want Ruthie to "die quickly" ... or at least before November.
Complete lie, on multiple counts. Ginsburg and Breyer can retire, and the concern is a potential switch in control of the Presidency. So much for a "classical education" and reading comprehension...

@14: The GOP also needs to vet their candidates better here and all over & modify their strategy to produce winning results (i.e. reach out to Hispanics and the Black community). More of the same old nstrategy will produce more of the same old results.
The GOP is a party that thrives on NOT reaching out to minority communities to cater to the old rich white vote. Getting them to change that will take a lot more than just wishful thinking. Even a hint of being soft on immigration (and obviously not immigration from Canada or Western Europe) is enough to get you drummed out of office.

@21: Nope. I was talking about loud lefties putting TARGETS on the backs of those who are no longer convenient to them. And actually said so. Nice try.
You're daft, and probably more than a little brain-damaged. The article you referred to clearly outlined their options -- they retire earlier, they can be replaced by a Democratic president, they retire later, new justices get named by someone from either party. It's exactly the same rambling that took place when justices like Souter and O'Connor have stepped down.

Liberals actually shooting targets (an immobile, inanimate object) and placing them on the backs of two LIVE Supreme Court Justices: OK, prudent, expedient ...
Liar. At no point have there been "targets" on Supreme Court justices. You're making it up.

Loud Lefties - I LOVE your hypocrisy and double standards - please keep them coming.

Nothing for a few weeks. Very little in June. SP is basically dead. Forget the nonsense comment threads. What do we take from the lack of articles? It is hard to believe nothing has been happening and we get a post it is about some nut all shooting a stuffed elephant. May check again in a few weeks, but my intuition says SP is dead. 27. Symbolic of the right, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's response to the child refugee crisis was to cruise the border with Sean Hannity in a gunboat. Because of frightened and hungry child refugees.

For an opposing view of how to handle this crisis, we have none other than Pope Francis.

"I would also like to draw attention to the tens of thousands of children who migrate alone, unaccompanied, to escape poverty and violence: This is a category of migrants from Central America and Mexico itself who cross the border with the United States under extreme conditions and in pursuit of a hope that in most cases turns out to be vain," he said. "They are increasing day by day. This humanitarian emergency requires, as a first urgent measure, these children be welcomed and protected."

Welcomed and protected? Sorry, not by Republicans. They prefer gunboats and screaming at the refugee children to go home.

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

"This is a huge threat to our Republic and Constitutional freedom...If you are what you say you are, and NOT armchair patriots, then those two justices will not live another week."

"I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection, but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country...And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters, on some occasions, where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in, engage in violence."

"We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens' creme brulee."

"When I first heard his decision, like many of you I wanted to take action immediately. I asked: how can we put some of these judicial activists on the Endangered Species List? I am still working on that!"

"If the government is not producing the results or has become destructive to the ends of our liberties, we have a right to get rid of that government and to get rid of it by any means necessary,"

"And, may godly courageous leaders rise up in His wisdom and power to lead us in displacing the criminal invaders from their seats and restore our constitutional republic."

"for we shall not have any coarse but armed revolution should we fail with the power of the vote in November ~ This Republic cannot survive for 4 more years underneath this political socialist ideologue."

31. "KDS has called our nation's president and AG racists. He couldn't back up these accusations in a million years."

According to Taliban Stevie (racist denier esq, for of left and race card player of the right), playing the race card doesn't mean that someone is a racist - BULLSHIT. Here it is;

"Attorney General Eric Holder once again played the race card -- this time on national television, in an interview on ABC's "This Week," claiming that he and President Obama have been targets of "a racial animus" by some of the administration's political opponents.

"There's a certain level of vehemence, it seems to me, that's directed at me (and) directed at the president," said Holder. "You know, people talk about taking their country back . . . There's a certain racial component to this for some people. I don't think this is the thing that is a main driver, but for some, there's a racial animus."

Reminded of his comments during Obama's first year as president that the U.S. is a "nation of cowards" on race, he refused to back down."

At this point, I don't know whether we're seeing the outworking of the gigantic racial chips on Holder's and Obama's shoulders or we're seeing just another despicable example of the two engaging in community organizing by branding their political opponents as racists.

These two have continually engaged in the politics of division, alienating Americans against one another on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, geography, income and every other conceivably exploitable category. By portraying themselves as victims and conservatives as bigots, they seek to intimidate conservatives from pursuing their agenda, divert attention from their own policy failures and keep the pot stirred on imaginary problems as cover to advance the remainder of their unpopular statist agenda."

That narrative reeks of racism to me. If you don't believe it, what about it don't you believe ? Does any leftist have the honesty or guts to agree ? It would be refreshing, but I won't hold my breath.

42. "I see that you have no rebuttal on my narrative in @31"

Your narrative? LMFAO! Your so-called narrative was an unattributed cut&paste stolen from David Limbaugh, which is in violation of U.S. Copyright Law.

"Show the quote verbatim- I harbor serious doubts about your sincerity."

As you were participating in the many threads and present for countless "bongo", "nappy-headed" and "jive-talking" slurs being spewn by Amused by Liberals, you just trashed yourself as a liar. And a racist.

"you are showing your anti-religious intolerance with your pseudo-sanctimonious rant"

Simply reminding the lying Rags of the factual, dark and violent history of her Church is an anti-religious rant? To your deluded mind, or better put, what's left of it, I reckon that's probably true.

44. This has gotta suck. One hundred current and former Kansas Republican elected officials endorse the Democrats for Governor and Lieutenant Governor.

"All of us are proud Republicans. We came together because of our common love of Kansas, our commitment to Kansas families, and our belief in moderate, commonsense leadership," said Wint Winter, former state Senator from Douglas County. "We are deeply concerned by the direction Sam Brownback is taking Kansas. Today we announce our opposition to his re-election. And to pledge our voices, our energy and our votes to Paul Davis and Jill Docking - our choice for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Kansas."

Ouch!

"This election should not be about electing a Republican or a Democrat as Governor. It must be about electing a moderate, commonsense Kansan as governor," said Dick Bond, former state Senate President. "I have been a Republican all my life and don't intend to change. But I am proud today to support Paul Davis and Jill Docking for Kansas' sake."

Ouch!!

How about that! Evidently, not all Republicans are as crazy as you guys. And they're to be found in Kansas, no less.

"As you were participating in the many threads and present for countless "bongo", "nappy-headed" and "jive-talking" slurs being spewn by Amused by Liberals, you just trashed yourself as a liar. And a racist.'

Where are the comments from Amused by Liberals ? You have not shown nothing except cut and paste I have seen before from you putting words in other people's mouths. Just as I figure, even if you project well you have exposed yourself once again to be a LIAR and loser.

"Your narrative? LMFAO! Your so-called narrative was an unattributed cut&paste stolen from David Limbaugh, which is in violation of U.S. Copyright Law."

HA ! Bring it. I am sure Mr. Limbaugh would not have a problem with me using and standing by it to argue against a moral idiot like you. The point is you cannot honestly write a rebuttal to it. Period.

'Simply reminding the lying Rags of the factual, dark and violent history of her Church is an anti-religious rant?"

Besides going on an anti-religious rant, you are living in the middle ages. FYI, Communism/totalitarianism was responsible for far more deaths in the last century than religion over the last 500 years +.

48. David Limbaugh, as stolen without attribution by KDS, "Attorney General Eric Holder once again played the race card -- this time on national television, in an interview on ABC's "This Week," claiming that he and President Obama have been targets of "a racial animus" by some of the administration's political opponents.

Um, Stupe, acknowledging the reality of right-wing "racial animus" is not playing the race card. Rather, Republicans denying their own racism with a knee-jerk "playing the race card" accusation is, in fact, simply more evidence that many Republicans are racists.

50. "a LIAR and loser"

Can't stop projecting, huh? And lying. My, that's some psycho-affliction you've got going there, KDS. Say, speaking of which, have you ever consider voltage as treatment for what ails you? If so, you can thank your lucky stars for President Obama because his ACA will cover treatment for what is obviously now an extremely acute pre-existing condition.

Posted by: Dr. Zatoichi, the Blind Surgeon on July 15, 2014 08:23 PM
51. @48 - your argument failed the smell test.

Here's what he also wrote;
"At this point, I don't know whether we're seeing the outworking of the gigantic racial chips on Holder's and Obama's shoulders or we're seeing just another despicable example of the two engaging in community organizing by branding their political opponents as racists."

That refutes your gibberish, which was superficial and dishonest to begin with.

"Rather, Republicans denying their own racism with a knee-jerk "playing the race card" accusation is, in fact, simply more evidence that many Republicans are racists."

Knee jerk ? Another superficial and baseless attempt and just because you disagree does not give you the entitlement to your own set of facts. Hey Einstein - I dare you to go back and read some of Limbaugh's archives on related topics and you will find numerous other examples of both of them playing the race card more damning than the column I used. In political discourse, those who brand others as racists are typically the biggest racists of all. Consequently, you project your inner racism well (Dan @40 gets it) and merit the (dis)honor of being biggest racist on this blog.

Sorry to say, KDS, but a mindless, hate-filled, racist David Limbaugh rant void of any facts gives me nothing to refute. It's just something to laugh at. But as you're a lying, POS racist yourself, his blather likely stokes the fires of race-hate raging within you. After all, that's why he wrote it. 67. "It's a lost cause."

Oh, it's much worse than that.

The incident in Oracle, AZ during which wingnuts screamed at children who were on their way to a YMCA camp was instigated by Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. And just who is Paul Babeu?

From 2012:

"The Pinal County sheriff, who stepped down as Arizona's co-chair for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign amidst allegations he threatened a gay ex-lover with deportation, reportedly served as headmaster for the now-defunct DeSisto School in Stockbridge, Mass. from 1999 to 2001. When Babeu -- a retired major in the Army National Guard and an ex-police officer -- was in charge, the Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services launched an investigation into repeated claims of physical and sexual abuse from students at the private boarding school, ABC15 is reporting.

More questionable still: Babeu's older sister
Lucy told the news station that she confronted her brother after finding a 17-year-old student from the school, which services troubled teens, living with him. She noted: "I said what is this student from Desisto doing here? He says, 'Lucy, he's my boyfriend. I love him.'"

Lucy claims her brother, once considered one of his state's rising Republican stars, was clearly having a relationship with the student, who has not been identified: "I said, 'Paul, get a hold of yourself here,'" said Lucy. "You were his teacher! You were his Executive Director! You can't do this."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/27/paul-babeu-outed-gop-sheriff-private-school-relationship_n_1304133.html

Who is Paul Babue? Just another Republican pedophile, one of hundreds who have been busted in recent years. Apparently, if they don't become priests, they become Republicans, attracted by the party's atmosphere of hate, fear and repression.

Rags, Shanghai Dan and KDS really know how to pick'em, doesn't they?

Republicans AND Democrats have them. It's just more obnoxious when Republicans try to paint themselves as holier-than-thou when they have morally challenged folks like this in their ranks.

Then again, when Democrats and liberals are racist, it's also kinda infuriating. I don't exactly enjoy the white-splaining that goes on with privileged liberals.

Drunk with victory, a creed founded on tolerance is turning away from its roots.
John Allen Gay
July 16, 2014

And this is what has happened to liberalism, he says. Rather than being what it began as, a "narrowly political strategy for living peacefully in a world of inexorably clashing comprehensive views of reality and the human good," liberalism has for many become that comprehensive view of reality and the human good. Your neighbor's ideas are no longer different. They are heretical. Liberalism could become the problem that it was intended to solve.

The "Contract with America" which Hastings signed did not limit the signatories to six terms in Congress, but to six years -- three terms at most. Hastings therefore continued drawing federal paychecks for fourteen years longer than he had promised, not the mere eight years I had erroneously stated.

And, since correcting one's own errors is about as contrary to the spirit of Sound Politics as can possibly be imagined -- tell us again, Rags: what's Washington State's minimum wage? -- I think a self-correction makes for a very fitting final comment here. Good-bye!
