This decision is too important for you

Washington Redskins

When will be the last election for President of the United States? The readers of the Seattle Times are not qualified to have any say in very important decisions... Today it was decided/announced to never, ever again mention the name of the football team in the other Washington in print or online. We can call it "The football team that used to be called the blanks."

Readers can tell the Times whatever they want, but the decision made by the Sports Editor Don Sheldon of the Sea Times will not be influenced by the facts and logic of their uninformed readers, quoting Seattle Times:

"Still, your feedback won't change our decision. Some things are too important to be put to a vote."

What other decisions are too important to be trusted to their readers?

2. Yawn. How about a discussion of why and how the 2 years of emails disappeared from the IRS ? Much more thought provoking than this.

3. Nice way to commemorate the murders of the three civil rights workers in Mississippi.

I see that TeaBircher hero and former Congressman Joe "You Lie" Walsh was removed from his own radio show for spewing racial slurs, then whined about it in tweets, again using slurs like the "N" word.

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2014/06/joe-walsh-tweets-racial-slur

Why are you holding back, Ron? You know you want to do it, too. And you know that nobody will remove you from this blog for using racial slurs. Quite the opposite, really. It's your big chance to become a national right-wing hero. Surely, your racist readers who are mired in merely slurring our nation's president as a "nappy-headed, jive-talkin' bongo" would appreciate your leadership in helping them realize their 1st Amendment right to slur away using the "N" word!

4. "Yawn. How about a discussion of why and how the 2 years of emails disappeared from the IRS ?"

It's only fair, seeing as how this blog went absolutely apeshit over the Bush email scandals - first the destroyed Bush, Cheney, Scooter Libby emails and then the US Attorney emails concealed on private RNC email addresses. Oh, wait. This blog never said one damned word about those scandals. Understandable, as those were actually, you know, important, and not some ginned-up wingnut bullshit.

Speaking of emails, how about a post on emails and what they've led to the end of Scott Walker and Chris Christie's political careers? That one seems rather relevant too.

5. The Seattle Times was inarticulate when they said "Some things are too important to be put to a vote". From context, I am pretty sure they meant something like "Some things are too deeply-held principles to be put to a vote." Which seems perfectly reasonable.

While this is a trivial matter for a post, at least Ron is letting us comment. If Jim Miller had posted this, he would have closed comments and requested a personal apology from the Seattle Times.

6. The sad, powerless individuals like the Dr./Boyscout who cannot articulate a point without projection, deflection and ad hominum attacks, show just how pathetic the local "progressive majority" has become.

7. @3 and @4 - stay in your little echo chamber.

Rather than focusing on political correctness = a characteristic of Marxism, I have a problem with the other part of their team name.

Change it from Washington to DC or the District so that it will not be confused with this state/area.

Posted by: KDS on June 20, 2014 07:19 AM
8. Smokie@6, you might try looking up the definition (and spelling) of "ad hominem attack". The only ad hominem attack in this comment thread (so far) is yours.

KDS@7 defines, "political correctness = a characteristic of Marxism".

Well, yeah, I suppose it is a characteristic of Marxism -- and any other economic system that doesn't want to needlessly offend anyone. Similarly, breathing is a characteristic of mass murderers.

9. Bruce sez, "you might try looking up" "and any other economic system"

Enough said.

Ron sez, "When will be the last election for President of the United States?"

Hyperventilate much? What did the ST do, take away a precious freedom? The freedom to read racial slurs in your newspaper? I can understand resisting change, Ron, but is this one? Really? If you don't mind my asking, what other racial, ethnic, gender and what-not slurs have you or do you struggle with?

Really, to see you fret on this site about your precious freedom of speech and the respect of reader opinion is truly comical.

Most of the posts on this site, about freedom of speech and the Seattle Times, naturally, don't even allow reader comments. This is a site that, when it does allow comments, will ban someone for simply disagreeing with the poster. This is a site that will ban someone for even mentioning a wa!tress. On the other hand, you do tolerate right-wing commenters calling our nation's president a "nappy-headed, jive-talking bongo", so do you have that going for you.

Freedom of speech, racist slurs and reader opinion? My God, you are truly funny.

How about whether to use the Oxford comma or not?

Posted by: Grammar Man on June 20, 2014 11:39 AM
11. "Oxford comma"

Still loyal to the Queen? As a Real American patriot, and as a proud commie-fasist-Mormon-Jihad-lovin'-statist, I prefer to use "Harvard comma", or when in Provo, the "Brigham Young comma".

Just kidding. From Page 56 of Dr. Zato's Manual of Style, "In doubt, stick damned comma in there and keep going!"

Ron sez, "very important decisions... Today it was"

Spot on, Ron! From Page 101, "Dots... Those are really cool! Like commas..., the more, the merrier!"

"decisions... Today it was decided/announced"

Again, spot on! From the Appendix, Page 187, "Whenever repetitive dotting taxes the mind and you can't figure out how to express your next thought, try hyphenating some words."

Just kidding. While it's just a blog, every blog should have a Grammar Man to help keep everybody on our toes.

12. Freedom of speech - something leftist progressives don't like unless it agrees with their viewpoint. Just read comments from Dr./MBS the previous comments to confirm that.

"Well, yeah, I suppose it is a characteristic of Marxism -- and any other economic system that doesn't want to needlessly offend anyone."

An textbook example of obfuscation, brought to you by Bruce. How does capitalism not want to needlessly offend anyone ? Hmmm, seriously baffling.

"Similarly, breathing is a characteristic of mass murderers."

This is about the freedom to have a racist slur as a team name, and nobody is taking that freedom away from anybody. This is also about the freedom to pressure a team to change it's name. You and Ron don't approve of that freedom.

This is about Ron's right to express the belief that he should be able to vote on whether or not a newspaper should be forced to use words he likes but which offend others. This is about the freedom of that newspaper to tell Ron that, in this case, his opinion doesn't mean squat.

This is about Ron's freedom to desperately cling to tired racist slurs which are being dropped from usage by those who are considerate of others. You believe mere consideration of others to be a Marxist trait. From your perspective, I have no doubt that's true.

This is about your freedom to post stupid comments. This is about my freedom to read your comments and reply, "My God, what a stupe".

"Miller is being a progressive in conservative drag..."

Sigh! My God, what a stupe.

16. Has Ron ever complained about the censorship of comments right here at Soundpolitics? Jim Miller hasn't tolerated any dissent in over a year, and pudge's comment threads routinely feature factual, on-topic comments which disappear without trace. Yet Ron seems not to care that none of these decisions were ever put to a vote.

Maybe he just holds The Seattle Times to a higher standard?

Stupe, the owner doesn't want to change the team name. Freedom to pressure the team for a change - which is NO freedom by the Federal Government. Have the native Americans vote on it once and for all and then live with the verdict. The sports editor of the Seattle Times is trying to be the thought police and holier than thou, while it has been shown that a plurality of native Americans are not offended by the name of Redskins - its mainly the paleface leftist progressives who are in another burst of fake outrage for political purposes.

This is the height of stupidity by the Statist snakes of the Senate - Reid, Schumer who are pushing this instead of dealing with issues that seriously impact millions of Americans. They don't care about that as they are corrupt and full of excrement - who are they to be so f'ing sanctimonious about it ?

Besides being racist (Reid) hypocrites themselves. No wonder Congress has a 7% approval rating (this is inclusive of Democrats- for those who are obtuse)

18. "The sports editor of the Seattle Times is trying to be the thought police and holier than thou,"

Actually, the job of the Sports Editor is to edit the Sports Page, which he is doing. That you and Ron don't like it is irrelevant.

"Have the native Americans vote on it once and for all and then live with the verdict."

Why should any group of persons, other than the team's owners, or officials of the league in which the team plays, have the power to change the team's name? Sounds seriously anti-freedom to me.

19. Very small issue in the broad scheme of things going on based on many major issues facing the US... but e-mailed Mr. Sheldon per his request that we would cancel our Times subscription. 21. "it has been shown that a plurality of native Americans are not offended by the name of Redskins - its mainly the paleface leftist progressives who are in another burst of fake outrage for political purposes"

In a word, horseshit.

Over 81% of respondents to a poll conducted by Indian Country Today objected, especially the youth. Over five hundred Native American organizations and hundreds of tribes have called for the end of degrading team names and mascots. Petitions with Native American signatures in the tens of thousands have been gathered.

We don't put civil rights up to a vote in this country, much less divvy them up based on poll results. If we did, the Irish and other immigrant groups of the past would have few civil rights today.

You choose to dishonor Native Americans, refusing to listen to their voices pleading to be heard. No other minority group in America is subjected to this. There are no teams in America named the Degos, the Darkies, the Mics, the Spics or the Krauts.

You would never be willing to approach a group of young Native American men and ask, "Do any of you Redskins know the way to a gas station?" any more than you'd ask a group of black men and ask, "Any of you Darkies know where I can find a good restaurant?" You wouldn't do it because you would know damned well that you would have crossed a line. If you won't say it to their faces, you damned well shouldn't use it for a team name and mascot.

Please don't misunderstand. As someone who wants to see the GOP fuck off and die, I encourage you to fight this to the death. Keep this shit up and, soon enough, you'll have lost the millenials forever and your party is dead. Works for me.

22. Greatly appreciate your concern for the GOP! Again reiterating this is an extremely minor issue being created, not out of principle, but out of desire to inflame passions. Look for real issues.

23. Look, I understand things haven't been going well for you guys and your party and that you wingnuts are terribly upset these days. Your political party wants to get rid of you. Your hero Cliven Bundy turned out to be an America-hating mooch. Sheldon Adleson and Rupurt Murdoch have written pro-immigration editorials. Glenn Beck and Pat Robertson are telling you that liberals had it right all along on Iraq. Megyn Kelly destroyed Dick and Liz. Chris Christie and Scott Walker are finished, having slit their own throats. Wingnut hack George Will doubles down on rape, ending his career. And to top it off, Native Americans object to your desire to express your freedom of speech by spewing racist slurs and using them as team mascots.

This has all gotta suck terribly for you and I hope you understand that you have my deepest sympathies.

Your criticism is well taken. While my expressing that a political party should die isn't to say that people should die, you would certainly be correct to say that it was wrong for me to put it that way. Besides being simply wrong, it detracts from points I'm trying to make.

Good call. I apologize for putting it that way.

Minor for you and me, perhaps, but likely not so minor to those Native Americans who find this offensive and degrading.

I say that if a Native American is offended and passions inflamed over perceived racist slurs, it's a matter of principle. That's not to say that there aren't those on the left and right who would use what is a minor issue to them to inflame passions. In fact, I believe that's exactly what Ron is doing. For my part, and as a matter of principle, I have to stand with Native American friends, acquaintances and others who view this as racist and degrading.

Dr. Weirdo - Is your brain atrophied from the bad weed you have smoked over the years ? Sure seems like it from the dumb ass comments you write like the one above. Your desire is to see tens of millions of Americans killed. Sigh! Next time, Stupe, please try telling us something we didn't know already.

By the way, I fixed your "reasoned take" link on the subject.

"In a section establishing the standing of the anti-Darkies petitioners, the patent panel made it clear they have no direct interest except that they are offended. Fine. Don't be Darkies fans. Never go to Sambo Field. Don't buy Darkies paraphernalia.

If something offends you, it must be crusaded against and crushed underfoot, using whatever instrument of power is available. That the franchise is holding firm against this assault is reason to say a hearty "Hail to the Darkies!" -- while we still can."

You wrote the very same thing about millions of Americans being killed and you said it first and you put it that way for effect. I gave you a dose of your own medicine even though you half-heartedly sorta retracted it. Consequently, I apologize about what I wrote to whoever read it. I also defended your first amendment rights to write whatever.

When you write that kind of invective, that indicates that you don't really want a conversation - you just want to insult anyone who doesn't agree with your views. Both sides can play at that game, which only serves to polarize any political debate. Your style probably served to influence Jim Miller to not allow comments to his posts, which granted is a chicken-s**t approach.

Yes, as you most certainly should, half-hearted though it was. You very clearly expressed a desire for tens of millions of Americans to die at the hands of Muslim extremists.

It's always rather puzzling to see you write about "Americans" and "first amendment rights". As a rabid Cliven "the mooch" Bundy supporter, you don't even believe this is a legitimate nation. Cognitive dissonance much?

Excerpt from a Native American site.

"To the left of Goldtooth's words, a newspaper clipping from 1863 advertises a reward, "The State reward for dead Indians has been increased to $200 for every red-skin sent to Purgatory. This sum is more than the dead bodies of all the Indians east of the Red River are worth."

"The 'Redskins' they were talking about were my ancestors," Goldtooth said during a phone interview."

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2013/11/13/dakota-man-exposes-vile-history-redskins-facebook-152241

A sampling of comments:

"Genocide by any other name is still genocide. Pride in a sports teams record is one thing. Giving the team an inapproriate and offensive name is another. This name, while honoring the native people in a typically white-ignorant fashion, is like revering a people while continuing to stick thorns in their skin."

"To me, the term meant people who were courageous and brave. I was ignorant of the dark, genocidal meaning. Thank you for setting me straight."

"I'll never be able to hear the "Redskin" name again without a shudder of horror. Of course the team should change their name. We should be deeply grateful to Goldtooth for having the courage and strength to reveal this story."

It appears that, as awareness the history of the term increases among Native Americans, objections also increase. As other Americans learn the history, I'm sure their objections will increase as well.

Republicans are once again on the wrong side of history. It's getting to be a habit. If you really want to be the party of the future, you might want to look into that.

Crosscut Daily Troll says she wasted time on the Senate floor this week after the patent announcement. http://crosscut.com/2014/06/18/thedailytroll/120599/daily-troll-redskins-nfl-amazon-senior-project/

The US faces challenges. The 100 powerful people in the Senate have plenty to do.

And the Seattle Times still thinks the decisions on native American names for sports teams is too important to even consider input from you. What other decisions are too important for people like you? Electing US senators?

45. "Anonymous Blind Surgeon finds it below trivial to talk"

She's lame. So are you for your Cantwell "gotcha" moment fail. Now can we move on, or is that all you've got? Are you up to examining Native American objections as outlined on that blog? Care to discuss Native American views which do not object to "Redskins" which are also shared on that site? There are hundreds of Native American schools with the team name "Redskins". There are many tribes which have no problem with "Redskins". We could weigh in on the issue as white descendants of an America who chose genocide and put out the bounties to collect red-skins, and who have opposing views. But you never had any intent to actually, you know, discuss the issue, did you? It was only about Cantwell. No wonder you're losing Millennials.

"And the Seattle Times still thinks the decisions on native American names for sports teams is too important to even consider input from you."

This from a blog where even your opinion is dismissed by Jim Miller. No input you allowed. You post on a blog where 'Anonymous' Pudge bans dissenting views at the drop of a hat. No vote for the dissenters. You're throwing stones from a glass house and look damn silly doing it.

"The US faces challenges. The 100 powerful people in the Senate have plenty to do."

Immigration reform is only waiting for your Republicans to get off their asses. I'm sure you'll tell them to get on it, Ron.

Sorry, but you have distilled your post and comments down to a whine about how one of "the 100 powerful people" is a hypocrite for not spending even time on the Redskins team name issue by pursuing a change to her high school team name. Way to blow your gotcha moment, Ron.

I'll gladly loan you a compass so you can find your way out of this.

47. Personally, it's not an issue I'd take to the streets. This issue has come up a few times before. Each time the objections becomes stronger, broader, and better stated.

After reading many Native American points of view and also their personal experiences with the term, it strikes me that as years pass, this will change. As more and more Americans, including Native Americans, become educated on the background of the term and the horrors of genocide, bounties and mutilation associated with it, societal attitudes will change and the term will fall from usage except as the slur that it is.

As I didn't see any Native Americans objecting to "Warriors" as a team name, the Washington Warriors works for me. It has a nice ring to it. Whatever the new name, it will happen in time as resistance is futile. Heh.

The Senate version of Immigration Reform is a scam. You are really an idiot besides and hard core Obamunist if you think the President will enforce whatever is passed by congress. He should be tried in a Civil court after his term is over, for the satisfaction of all of the people he has screwed over illegally.

The Republicans do need to get off their asses--to reach out to the Hispanic community and bring a coherent message about accountability and preserving sovereignty and fairness in immigration reform and how to stop this flooding the borders with children from Central America without US citizenship - prompted by Dr. Weirdo's lawless president's administration. F**k the Obamunists and the jackasses they rode in on !

The Republicans had also better put on their battle gear and stop playing to the whims of the out of touch country club establishment, who keep nominating retreads for POTUS candidates and push back hard against the leftist progressives who are in full battle mode 24/7 - with the LGBT activists, the racist fringe groups - LaRaza and NAACP, drug cartels, the race hustlers and Marxist funding machine - headed by George Soros (who far and away contributes more the the Democrats than the Koch Brothers do to the GOP). The leftist radicals in the process of continuing their hostile takeover - starting in 2009 with the ACA, Stimulus, the IRS, Fast and Furious gun running to Mexico and the Middle East, covering up Benghazi and the bombs keep and doubling down on the aforementioned corruption and the bombs on keep dropping on our liberties.

Law bidding citizens deserve much better, but as long as low-info wannabe despots like Steve - the morally bankrupt pseudo-doctor (sic), MBS, et.al. keep voting for larger Federal Government, which means more corruption, it will be a long protracted war against the enemy within (i.e the entire Democrat and part of the Republican party - who have flipped the bird to those who they are supposed to represent).

49. Ron sez, "Sports Editor Don Sheldon of the Sea Times will not be influenced by the facts and logic of their uninformed readers"

Facts and logic? We'll see. You obviously believe that you're an informed reader. You have a blog. You have a post on the subject. You're here in the comment section. You complain about not being allowed to express your opinion on the subject, one not doubt derived from facts processed through your keenly logical mind. Well, what is your opinion, Ron? I put mine out there. Where's yours?

50. KDS sez, "battle gear" "lawless president's administration" "Marxists" "leftist radicals" "bombs on keep dropping on our liberties" "long protracted war against the enemy within" "morally bankrupt" "wannabe despots"

It looks like KDS is on-board with the right-wing "hostile takeover" of our nation's government, taking it away from our duly elected "Democrats and part of the Republican party".

And to think Ron started this post about a team name by wondering when the last presidential election might happen. Heh. This must be some weird in-joke shared amongst the "hostile takeover" right-wing crowd Ron runs with.

51. @50 - Why are you deflecting blind Dr. ? Its apparent that you can't dispute Keep jousting at windmills, fool. Your crowd had the hostile takeover in 2009 by Obama and his marxist inner circle, as documented . A counter-takeover is what it would take to restore things to the way it was, so we can party like its 1999. There is no other way to do it vs. the leftist progressive wingnuts other than by a hostile takeover. They copied the Bolsehviks and that's what the freedom loving and higher information voters are up against.

The TeaBirchers (as you call it) do not have it quite right/they are too far right and unrealistic in some ways - the establishment GOP and the Tea Birchers will have figure out a way to band together. Throw in Rand Paul and some Alex Jones for corruption monitoring of the leftists and the GOP will be better equipped to oppose the Alinskyite tactics of the left that the blind Doctor worships at the altar of.

You will have a difficult time disproving what I wrote in @49,
but you haven't bothered trying ergo, it speaks for itself.

52. should read; You will have a difficult time disproving what I wrote in @48, but it also holds true for what you wrote in @49..

53. "There is no other way to do it vs. the leftist progressive wingnuts other than by a hostile takeover."

Cool your jets, KDS, there's no need to be so upset. I said you were on-board for the right-wing hostile takeover of our country. Hell, if anything, I'd say we finally agree on something.

"Rand Paul and some Alex Jones for corruption monitoring of the leftists"

Well, for my part, I just hope they can get to the bottom of what the hell happened to the FEMA camps where Obama was going to lock you up until he got an oath out of you pledging allegiance to your "tyrannical-socialist-commie-fascist-statist-totalitarian-incompetent-bumbling-nappy-headed-jive-talkin'-bongo" Fearless Leader.

54. I am not upset, just determined to pry this country out of the hands of the leftist progressive fascists, who you ardently support, being the ignorant libtard that you are - blind doc. LOL

"tyrannical-socialist-commie-fascist-statist-totalitarian-incompetent-bumbling-nappy-headed-jive-talkin'-bongo" Fearless Leader."

I would remove nappy-headed - its tacky and racist - even though I know the blind doctor is really a closet racist, otherwise you are close. You can replace that with despicable. So what is your point besides the pointy little tin-foil hat you are wearing. So, when are you going to apologize for the contempt you have for G W Bush ? It may occur to you that I have as much contempt for the current president as you had for the last president, the contempt of which prompted the leftist progressive takeover in 2009, but it ain't over yet.

Bobby Jindal has it correct;

The governor said there was a "silent war" on religious liberty being fought in the U.S. -- a country that he said was built on that liberty.

"I am tired of the left. They say they're for tolerance, they say they respect diversity. The reality is this: They respect everybody unless you happen to disagree with them," he said. "The left is trying to silence us and I'm tired of it, I won't take it anymore."

Here, here !! I give Gov. Jindal credit for telling it like it is.
