UW leads in arctic warming study
The University of Washington will now lead the US outside of Alaska in arctic research - and global warming? Seattle Times says it well "Arctic 101: UW degree to prep students for a melting world" UW has formed a new Future of Ice program, which will offer an Arctic Studies minor.

Is Australian Professor of Climate Change Chris Turney to be on the faculty? His Spirit of Mawson expedition was researching climate change and the loss of sea ice in Antarctica. Well, that was their stated intent. (Turney is known to be a warming scienist by his being a "carbon entrepreneur" according to The Australian registration required) But they found the increase of sea ice. Actually, the sea ice found them and made their host ship stuck in the ice.

Now their ship and the Chinese ice breaker sent to rescue them are waiting to be rescued by (ta ta!) the United States of America's Polar Star icebreaker.

More details on the Spirit of Mawson - Clarice Feldman at American Thinker.

1. As long as the Feds are throwing money around with Global Warming™ attached to it then there will be colleges and businesses clamoring to prove that man is causing the planet to warm. Can't make much money taking that Global Warming™ money and then showing that it isn't happening. That won't keep the dollars flowing.

Two things in addition: First of all, if you take a rectangle that is 6 feet on a side representing the Earth's atmosphere (26 sq feet), man's contribution (using the latest tonnage figures) per year is a square a teensy bit smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. Hard to imagine that doing irreparable harm to the environment.

Second of all, two German scientists call complete BS on the the Greenhouse Effect and "forcing". That paper is here: http://arxiv.org/pdf/0707.1161.pdf

I don't know how long this charade is going to last but the ones who will loose the most $$ will fight the hardest. They got kids in college and BMW's to support too!

If only there were some way to find out more about the University of Washington's Future of Ice Program. In an ideal world one would be able to follow the links ...

PSC History

The present day Polar Science Center (PSC) can be traced back to an enthusiastic, but random group of researchers that came together as part of a multi year Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX) primarily funded by the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and the Polar Continental Shelf Project of Canada (PCSP) from 1970-1978. The primary goal of AIDJEX was to develop a comprehensive model of sea ice cover under the combined influences of the atmosphere and the ocean. [snip] In 1982 PSC was incorporated into the Applied Physics Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research facility that is a unit of the University of Washington Office of Research.

So, the UW continues its nation leading role in ice research into its thirty sixth year and has posted a research position, much like it has for the previous 35 years.

Good news, right Ron? Right (un)SP Peanut Gallery?

After all, it was UW's PSC researcher, Dr. Zhang, who published the paper in September of 2013 documenting and explaining the puzzling growth of sea ice in Antarctica that the Russian research ship Akademik Shokalskiy got stuck in.

The Future of Ice!

How frigid 'polar vortex' could be result of global warming The polar vortex putting the US in a deep freeze could represent how global warming is changing dynamics in the Arctic, researchers say.

Paradoxically, the event may be a harbinger of winter outbreaks to come in the northern hemisphere as Earth's climate warms, some researchers say - a result of shrinking Arctic Ocean summer sea ice and the projected changes in wind and snowfall patterns triggered by the ocean's warmth and moisture. ... The change has been most obvious in the long-term decline of Arctic summer sea ice during the past 30 years. As the summer ice thins and shrinks in expanse, more ocean is exposed to longer hours of sunlight and absorbs heat that otherwise would have been reflected back to space. In the fall, heat and moisture return to the atmosphere with the moisture forming snow.

'Polar Vortex' Scaremongering

Remember back in the good 'ole days when everyone expected winters to be, well, cold? Well, forget that. The Leftmedia is having a field day with this week's furious Arctic outbreak across a large portion of the U.S., thanks to what is alarmingly being called the "polar vortex." Climate alarmists were quick to blame the cold snap on variable weather patterns being created by man-made global warming. The Weather Channel wondered, "Is The Record Cold Arctic Outbreak Tied To Global Warming"? while CBS' Charlie Rose asked, "Is it definitely connected to global warming?" Putting scaremongering aside, the "polar vortex" is an upper-level cyclone that is always present. Pieces of the vortex occasionally break from the cyclone, taking with it pools of sometimes very frigid air. Bottom line: Mother nature gets the last laugh.

Comments made by Cardinal Bergoglio in 2010 shed light on his understanding of capitalism, work, and the poor

"What happens is that the unemployed, in their hours of solitude, feel miserable because they are not 'earning their living.' That is why it is very important that governments of all countries, through the relevant ministries and departments, cultivate a culture of work, not of charity.... They have to cultivate sources of work because, and I never tire of repeating, this, work confers dignity." -- Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, 2010.

Owning Up to the Obamacare Lies
Liberals are finally admitting, quietly, that conservative critiques were right all along.

It has not simply been that time has vindicated many of the conservative complaints. On the contrary: The Left has started to admit that much of what Obamacare's critics said was true all along -- even going so far as to unashamedly incorporate the grievances into their apologies. Earlier in the year, Jonathan Chait, Jonathan Cohn, and Ezra Klein -- the administration's golden trio -- all of a sudden switched tactics and came clean. As reports of increased premiums started to flood in from across the country, the group tutted impatiently, rolled its eyes, and, with a how-stupid-are-you tone, explained that obviously one couldn't cover a whole host of new people without some premiums' being raised. In other words, once Obamacare's launch was imminent, the Left admitted that conservatives' key critique -- which the president and Nancy Pelosi had promised over and over and over again was but a lie -- had been correct all along.

Warmers Use Magic to Create the Illusion of Science

...Yesterday I wrote about how increasingly frustrated global warming alarmists were, practically throwing tantrums as real-time data shows that global warming models do not accurately model temperatures. ...

But that's not stopping the alarmists, who continue to make prediction about the next two-hundred years even though they haven't gotten the last two-hundred years right, yet alone the last two decades.

New models cranked out almost daily by them show that, "oh, no! global warming will be even worse in the future than we had predicted!"

Huge new storm is wreaking havoc across Ireland's western coastline Storms of last week described as "worst in living memory" by island resident.

Met Eireann forecaster Pat Clark stated "We have had worse storms in the past in terms of wind, but this time we had high tides as well so the critical factor here has been the combination of all of these weather events; high winds, heavy rain and high seas all together." The forecaster said a 'huge storm' currently in the middle of the Atlantic is responsible for the current conditions.

21. Everything Is Because Of 'Climate Change', Except What Isn't
And worse than the the scientists are the armchair commentators. In the press, on opinion shows, in editorials, on social media, on blogs, in the classroom, at watercoolers, and in every other possible venue, the global warming faithful are there, ready to condemn heresy and make pretense at moral superiority. They are part of the club, the devout and true, and you are either with them or against them. Humorless, ill-informed, pompous, and self-certain, they know things. They don't think them, they know them. And what they know is that everything can be related to global warming, if by related you mean "made to support." And anything can't be made to support, simply isn't related.

It doesn't have to make sense. It's an article of faith.

So take this advice from Sonny Bunch: keep making jokes at their expense. They've earned it.

I know I will.

Karl Popper and the Ideology of Global Warming

Popper wrote that an important tenet in the philosophy of science was that a theory is not really scientific if it doesn't admit that there is always the possibility the theory may be false. Any scientific theory that does not allow the possibility it may be false is no longer science, but is ideology, a belief system taken entirely on faith.

... Sounds like a religious cult to me. C.S. Lewis would agree, as he was one of the first to name such cults branches of "scientism," a belief system that sees scientific theory as infallible and therefore a handy substitute for traditional religious beliefs that see only the almighty and all wise God as infallible.

The warmist cult resembles religion in another sense, too. There is penance and redemption possible. According to the warmists, in order to avoid catastrophe, we humans must change our way of living and decrease the heat by abandoning fossil fuels and reducing our carbon footprint. Self-flagellation involves penitent actions such as reducing our standard of living and getting rid of sinful objects such as the incandescent light bulb. We can and must save ourselves and the planet.

Al Gore's Nightmare Intensifies

It's been a tough week for warmists, and it is getting worse. The spectacle of the Ship of Warmist Fools stuck in Antarctic ice they expected to see melting, and then their rescuers getting stuck in ice, was bad enough. But then the East and Midwest got locked into life-threatening cold that is disrupting the New Year. Those memories will linger.
And now comes the launch of the Global Cooling Awareness Project.

Really Severe Weather!

Good heavens Branco - you're beautiful!

Dear Zatoichi,

Vatican: Lots of people exploiting Pope Francis for their own ideological agendas, huh?

Dear President Incompetent and Oh So Deliciously Mockable

It's awfully strange to see a President simultaneously claim that his economy is (finally) on the mend... while simultaneously demanding yet another "emergency" unemployment extension. Obamanomics is a perpetual unemployment emergency. Five years on, the American economy still can't rise from its sick bed and pull the IV tube out of its arm. Heckuva job, Obama voters!

It's all so simple to Obama's mind, and he just can't understand why it hasn't worked yet. All his theories say it must work. That's what an economy is, right? People spending money? So if the government takes money from rich people, or just prints dollars up in the Treasury basement, and throws a blizzard of bills at people, they'll spend money... and bada-bing, bada-boom, ECONOMY! And if people are buying stuff, that means other people must be selling it, so... SHAZAM! JOBS!

We'll just keep trying it until Reality learns its lesson and kneels before Theory. Maybe we just need more unemployed people spending more welfare dollars to hit the magic pressure level needed to initiate socialist cold fusion. Too much of the old, evil, greedy, free economy remains. Cut that workforce down a bit more, and who knows what beautiful flowers of social justice might bloom?

23. Yes, facts are stubborn things.

Doombots have said all these things:

Sierra Club - March 23, 2013
"For the record--I do not think that any sea ice will survive this summer. An event unprecedented in human history is today, this very moment, transpiring in the Arctic Ocean...."
[Paul Beckwith - PhD student paleoclimatology and climatology - part-time professor]

BBC - 12 December 2007
"Our projection of 2013 for the removal of ice in summer is not accounting for the last two minima, in 2005 and 2007,"......."So given that fact, you can argue that may be our projection of 2013 is already too conservative."
[Professor Wieslaw Maslowski]

Canada.com - 16 November 2007
"According to these models, there will be no sea ice left in the summer in the Arctic Ocean somewhere between 2010 and 2015.
"And it's probably going to happen even faster than that," said Fortier,""
[Professor Louis Fortier - Université Laval, Director ArcticNet]

Reality says that polar ice is actually quite cyclical, and absent random extreme years, it is pretty much the same as it has been for decades.

And if fact Antarctic Ice is at a 30 year high.

And if the "Warming" is "Global" then how could it be that Obamabots/Doombots would want to have us immediately submit to economy destroying climate treaties based on (false) Arctic Ice predictions, while ignoring the (actual) extent of Antarctic Ice?

Answer: Obamabots/Doombots are not interested in climate, they are interested in forcing Socialism down our throats.

Do not be afraid of their chicken little bullsh-t.

Climateers Caught in the Vortex

Try this parlor game out at a cocktail party next time you're clinking ice-free glasses with a warmist: ask him to specify what climate or weather phenomenon would not be consistent with the general theory of climate change. And then step back and enjoy the fun. Being a climateer is almost as easy as being a Keynesian.

The trouble with this disposition is that it violates the Occam's Razor that most people of common sense carry about in their hip pocket: if it's really cold over a wide area, the warming theory loses the persuasive power that comes from hyping a crisis. Plus the fact that once upon a time, the same group of folks told us that polar vortices like the one we are having right now was evidence of imminent global cooling.

But, I digress:

"... ask him to specify what climate or weather phenomenon would not be consistent with the general theory of climate change."

That's easy: a return to historical climate patterns. Among the evidence would be fewer super-storms, smaller annual variances in polar ice packs, and a gentle cooling of the oceans' surface temperatures over time. Do you imagine this is hard to understand, or is your denial so complete that even a return to status quo is impossible for a self-described conservative to envision?

34. "That's easy: a return to historical climate patterns. Among the evidence would be fewer super-storms, smaller annual variances in polar ice packs, and a gentle cooling of the oceans' surface temperatures over time."

What does that have to do with climate warming ? Leftists are grasping at straws and pulling arguments out of their orificies

"Do you imagine this is hard to understand, or is your denial so complete that even a return to status quo is impossible for a self-described conservative to envision?"

Your vision of status quo lives in a bubble. Once again, you make no sense.

"But when there's nothing but Miller posted here, this place is truly deader than a doornail. But at least it gives Rags a chance to save up a bunch of stupid links to nowhere that nobody reads or cares about."

Noone cares about the links you have posted. Rags doesn't need to post links, because left wingnuts like you are apparently unable to coherently respond to her arguments with a lick of credibility. Miller needs to grow a pair.

35. "...nothing to offer except was rinse repeat."

Having your smug, cheap-shot straw-man swept aside on a torrent of facts just really, really hurt, didn't it? How amusing -- your attempt to treat climate science like creationism failed you. Nobody could have predicted! :-D

"What does that have to do with climate warming ? "

We all see, very clearly now, the basis of your certainty concerning global warming.

36. Maybe you or your fellow front pagers should recruit Rags to do her own posts, as her comments are exponentially longer than your post, and not at all on topic.

I have repeatedly asked, publicly and privately, to have the public blog reopened, to no avail.

The articles mock your 'global warming' nonsense and the cheap yet oh so wrong shots taken at the Pope. You simply don't like have your erroneous point of view shown as erroneous and worthy of mocking.

It's a tough time to be a loud lefty and a liberal: every single thing your leaders have touched have devolved into spectacular failure. Your vulnerable public libs are running for the hills dropping out of races, your impotent, lazy and exceptionally incompetent President has impressively bad approval ratings home and across the globe, the majority of the country thinks we're going to hell in a handbasket economically, culturally; they believe that bastard cousin of Hillarycare will make health care in this country worse. If it wasn't such a nightmare it would be a joke that the Obamacare numbers are inflated by overwhelming Medicaid applications. The cherry on top is the spectacle of "scientists" out to prove reduction in ice caught in ice - along with several ice-breakers sent to rescue them. The whipped cream is the ice blast that covered the country in the past week. The nuts on top ... well, have a look in the closest mirror!

Having your smug, cheap-shot straw-man swept aside on a torrent of facts just really, really hurt, didn't it?

By you oh so original bringing up a pointless comment you've beaten to death? Jokes on you, sweetcheeks. See the comment above.

37. The Warmist Doombots are the ones who do not understand the difference between climate and weather.

Climate trends cannot be discerned for periods less than 30 years. And yet the five year weather Warmist Doombots quotes listed above are from alleged Climate Scientists. No one who is getting paid to do Climate Science should be making five year weather scare scenario predictions about all of the ice in the Arctic melting. That is what bookmakers do, not scientists. And to be sure, the Doombot Warmist Weather Fear Prophecies did not come to pass.

It sucks to be an Obamabot/Doombot, because you are at the mercy of dumbf--ks like those quoted above who make really stupid predictions. "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan." Stupid predictions that any sane person could have told you would not come to pass. And yet you are on the Obama/Doombot bandwagon, bought in to the political movement, instead of actual scientific truth. So the science is settled right? Even though science is never settled, and the science you are clinging to was proven false.

39. What's this we hear from the shallow end of the pool?

"left wingnuts like you are apparently unable to coherently respond to her arguments with a lick of credibility"

First off, LMFAO!!

Look, Rags, as with most psychotics, doesn't make arguments. What I see is called "shared psychotic disorder". Shared, as in shared with you and some other right-wing freaks hanging out here. To put it in a nutshell, a person like Rags develops delusions in the context of a relationship with another person or people, in this case, you and other psychos here, who blissfully share delusions.

You see, delusions aren't like hallucinations, like you're seeing a tree walking down the street or something like that. Delusions are false beliefs that are persistent and organized, just like the screeds posted by Rags which you, as one who shares her delusions, delusionally called "arguments". The thing about shared psychotic disorder psychos is that these delusions just won't go away no matter how much logic, science or even common sense one might throw at them. The reinforcement that comes from shared delusions just can't be overcome no matter how many whacks in the head you give them. Turn up the voltage and it doesn't do a damned thing.

What does that spell?

w-i-n-g-n-u-t

But you know, even in a delusional state, the psycotic can still demonstrate that they're clinging to reality. Stuff like this, for example,

"Miller needs to grow a pair."

Of course, it could just be the squirrel and the nut.

40. "Your vulnerable public libs are running for the hills"

Vulnerable? My God, man, you just lost your two leading presidential candidates on the same day and it's only January 2014. If you keep losing them at this rate and all you'll left is Liz Cheney. Or John McCain. OMG! LMFAO!!

41. "By you oh so original bringing up a pointless comment you've beaten to death?"

You wade in here, making long, tedious, off-topic rants, and endlessly hectoring us liberals with finger-wagging, name-calling, moralistic blather. I respond by reminding you of your own blatant hypocrisy, of your literally saying one thing whilst doing the very opposite, and it still does not occur to you that maybe, just maybe, nobody takes your lecturing seriously. Priceless!

As for the snide, evidence-free claim you quoted and I disproved, climate change is (unlike creationism or other religious beliefs) falsifiable; we can describe, as I partially did, evidence which would invalidate it. That we are not seeing that evidence urther bolsters the theory. It's worth noting how the deniers in this thread attack the persons, not the evidence; there's a reason for that.

Another Vulnerable House Democrat Announces 2014 Retirement

How many House and Senate runners does that make now? Oh yea - as of March 2013, FIVE Senators and I've lost count of House members since Apr 24, 2013! Oh yes and I do LOVE those sources.

Obama's Insincere War

John Kerry famously asked during the Vietnam War: How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake? Now the secretary of state should pose a version of his long-ago rhetorical question to his boss. Obama evidently has been asking men to die for what he considers a mistake for years now.

Good heavens Chip Bok - you're beautiful!

Poll: Undecided 2014 Voters Overwhelmingly Disapprove of Obamacare

- On the generic Congressional ballot, 53 percent of likely voters say they'd support a "Republican who will be a check and balance to Barack Obama," while 47 percent prefer a "Democrat who will help Obama pass his agenda." That's a six-point GOP edge. Among independents, Republicans hold a 30-point lead on this question.

- Eighty-seven percent of respondents say the "Affordable" Care Act will not make their coverage more affordable, with nearly six in ten predicting higher costs as a result of the law.

- Question: "Has the government's implementation of the 1010 health care law...made you more confident in the government's ability to address problems in the health care sector, less confident, or...no effect either way?" Twenty percent (virtually all Democrats) say more confident, while fully 56 percent say less confident -- including two-thirds of independents.

... UPDATE - A new Q-poll pegs Obama's approval rating at 41 percent. He's 26 points underwater on healthcare approval, and (-19) on the economy.

The dependence--if not slavishness--of Democrats on the new super rich is best revealed by the dog that isn't barking in the current liberal crusade against economic inequality

43. Hey, I may not agree with Rags a lot of the time and the endless links do get tiresome, but at least she has a right to post on this SP post. We probably both agree that Jim Miller's posts need to go. They do nothing for SP since he never (now) allows comments. At least Pudge allows comments from some people and anonymous cowards. Jim has his own blog where he duplicate posts items. All SP needs to do is have a link to his blog, but they should take away his direct posting rights here. I would be curious the click through rates to the permalinks on his posts. I bet they are few if any.

While I am on this rant, SP could add some spam filtering to their comments form that doesn't include CAPTCHA. There are non-CAPTCHA ways of including spinner fields, honeypot fields, and randomizing field names. I am sure Pudge, given his well-known software programming skills could change the code around. It would make his and the other posters life here easier to remove the generated SPAM from threads.

44. "left wingnuts like you are apparently unable to coherently respond to her arguments with a lick of credibility"

First allow me to LMFAO! again.

Let's take a look at what KDS calls an argument.

"To be honest, I love Seattle. It is a beautiful city with some of the most incredible scenery anywhere in the world. However, I am absolutely..."

An argument? All we have here is a "Love the city, hate the people" screed. Kind of like your, "I love my country, but I hate it's people". Why do I use the word hate? Because the eliminationist lingo that followed at the link, which Rags did not bother to quote,

"Of course this cancer isn't just contained to Seattle"

Cancer. Something to be eliminated.

"these useful idiots are dancing in the streets like the Muslims extremist did on September 11, 2001"

Muslim extremists! Kill them all! Glassify the Middle-East! Eliminate them!

"They're socialists, progressives, they are Commies!"

Commies!! War!! Eliminate them!!

Listen up, KDS, that's eliminationist speech. This is what inspired the author to go down that road,

"Shamefully, in this, the richest country in human history, fifty million of our people - one in six - live in poverty. Around the world, billions do not have access to clean water and basic sanitation and children die every day from malnutrition. This is the reality of international capitalism. This is the product of the gigantic casino of speculation created by the highway robbers on Wall Street. In this system the market is God, and everything is sacrificed on the altar of profit. Capitalism has failed the 99%. Despite recent talk of economic growth, it has only been a recovery for the richest 1%, while the rest of us are falling ever farther behind."

Did Rags even link to an argument? Hell, she didn't even link to a rebuttal. Cancer! Muslim Extremists! Commies!

Sigh! And only yesterday we learned that a high-ranking Republican official wrote of the children sitting for hours in buses, something that he had caused himself, "They are the children of Buono voters."

It's so easy now to imagine the author of Rags' link sitting in a Seattle park on a beautiful, sunny day as children play around him and he's thinking, "I love this park, but I hate these sons and daughters of socialist commies." What would be his thoughts if he were at the 9/11 memorial at Westlake Mall along with a half-million citizens, including the city's children, as the sound of the bugler playing Taps echoed off the skyscraper walls? "I love this city, but I hate all of these weeping, hand-holding, socialist commies"?

Heh. I couldn't help but pause when I read this one by the author,

"I was awoken this morning at about 4:30 AM by a Facebook message"

WTF? All I can say about that is, Facebook messages do not interrupt the sleep of Zatoichi.

45. "at least she has a right to post on this SP post"

I apppreciate Rags when she actually comments and engages in discussion. Unfortunately, with most of her posts it seems like one can scroll for days before finding her own words. Heck, up @5 there's not even a message, just links. It's a waste of our precious internet tubes.

Jim Miller is a blog-killer, that's for sure. Heh. So I think he should stay! It's kind of fun watching him and Purge pound nails into the (un)SP coffin. I hope to do that myself, pound a few nails, but if the posters want to do it too, that's fine by me. Just kidding. I hope the blog survives, but even if it does, it is doomed to irrelevancy if Miller and Purge continue to remain it's primary bloggers. My God, when Miller's the only one here, this place doesn't even have a pulse.
