Seahawks Open Post

In which you can congratulate the team, practice cheers for Sunday, make predictions, or put up anything else relating to their season and the game with Atlanta.

1. Well, I'll have to admit...thought they were starting the wrong quarterback at start of season (weren't we all thinking that) and I'm sure if we lose to the Falcons there will be those who still might maintain that.
No more second-guessing Coach Pete any more for me; I'll go along and trust his judgement. Will this game on Sunday be a tough one...no doubt but if we can maintain a healthy squad I think we can pull it off. Lighten up on the smack talk and just do the talking with their actions on the field. This is a fascinating time for Seattle area sports and the pulse of the area. When the Sonics won the BB championship many moons ago I never thought they got their deserved praise like an east coast team would get...so I'm hoping our 'Hawks can put us on the forefront of sports talk for a while. GOoooooooooo 'Hawks!!!

2. Go Hawks.

OK, I am fully aware of the possibility and willing to risk being banned.

I strongly object to the authors of the articles here at SP closing the comments. I believe the REASON you author and post the articles is to stimulate discussion. I would like to gently ask why you post articles if you simply want to control the nature of discussion?

Discussion and debate is not, can not be lineal. By their very nature they must progress and expand. Debate and discussion are activities of thinking humans. Humans are individual, thoughtful, messy, rude, and most importantly think differently, argue and debate differently and have different definitions of 'polite' discourse.

I realize that we often let the comments expand in a way you the authors don't like. Some of us use sarcasm, others use insults, others are 'take no prisoners'. But we who participate clearly don't mind, because we keep coming back!

I'm Italian. We love, we yell, we get over it, we move on. We who are regulars here are a loose type of family. We love, we yell, we get over it, we move on. I don't actually know anyone here, of course, and you don't know me. But I like the folks here. They're decent, open-minded, rational, intelligent, fun people. And you know what happens when you put a bunch of decent, open-minded, rational, intelligent people in the same room together? They sometimes disagree. Sometimes quite vehemently. But they're big enough people not to take the mere act of disagreement as a personal affront. And if they/we don't, why do you? To simply say 'off topic' and close the thread is akin to saying 'I'm taking my ball and going home'. It's rude.

Please let the threads die natural deaths. You can certainly hasten that by posting new and/or more interesting topics. Or, you can focus the discussion that go too far awry by contributing a comment that redirects those of us too far off topic.

We do not deserve to be slapped and sent for a time out like a misbehaving children.

I apologize for having to post this here, but, as you the authors certainly know, there is simply no way to contact you privately through email with suggestions or thoughts. My email address is active and legit.

Go Hawks. (and Go Browns! - yes, I know)

If you had watched the Badgers last year (being from Wisconsin originally, I did), you would have realized how ready Wilson was for the pro's.

I would have to say that the best comparison I have seen for Wilson is to Fran Tarkenton. As a Packer Fan, I can state Tarkenton was a handful.

4. "When the Sonics won the BB championship many moons ago I never thought they got their deserved praise like an east coast team would get..."

You are right to a certain point, but even the Bullets didn't get much respect. When Magic and Bird came into the league the next year there were media remarks like "Finally!", as though the Portland, Seattle and Washington championships had no value. And didn't Golden State win one too? As I recall, the games on television were shown tape-delayed at 11:30PM.

"I strongly object"

I'll hope that you're not banned. I don't object as strongly, but I more or less agree with you. I sometimes wonder what the topic might be in these threads. Take that last "Cinderella" thread for instance. What was that about? Both sides have whines when looking back eight and twelve years ago. Other than "Get over it", what's there to say? But that thread led to some interesting discussion.

I suppose we commenters could stay on topic a wee bit longer. But on the other hand, the moderators should consider letting the threads run longer and allow this site's community to live a little.

Nate Silver picks Seahawks to make it to Super Bowl

Silver, 34, became famous for crunching numbers to pick all 50 states correctly in the 2012 Presidential election.

What's an (un)SP peanut & Seahawks fan to do??

6. .
On one of the few posts our (un)SP front pagers manage to put together, Warren predicted that the WA budget is headed to be like California's.

In 2013 with a Democratic governor and Democratic super majorities in the legislature and with the voters in CA having just approved Jerry Brown's tax hike initiative, what's going on in California?

California's deficit is gone

Gov. Jerry Brown took office two years ago promising that he had the know-how and the fiscal prudence to guide the state out of its financial crisis, and on Thursday he delivered a budget without a deficit.
It's the first time since 2007 that leaders at the Capitol haven't had a deficit to contend with and the first time since the late 1990s that the outlook over future years shows surpluses instead of deficits.

Maybe the Hewlett-Packard board of directors should give Jerry Brown a call?

7. @2: To simply say 'off topic' and close the thread is akin to saying 'I'm taking my ball and going home'. It's rude.

Discussions like that do need some structure and an end... but what's the point of adding comments if they're not managed consistently?

8. Go Seahawks!! All the way to the superbowl!!

...only to lose the the eventual NFL champions Denver Broncos.

Posted by: Rick D. on January 11, 2013 05:43 PM
9. @3 - I also remember Wisconsin losing to the Mighty Duck machine of Oregon (the team the Huskies love to hate) in last year's Rose Bowl. I thought Wilson played well then and always liked him as a QB - in the role of the underdog - the only one of 3 more highly regarded rookie QB's in the NFL who are still in the playoffs.
I like Coach Carroll's unbridled enthusiasm - that has paid off big. One caveat: It would probably be in the Seahawks' best interest if they played the 49ers and not the Pack in the NFC Championship game, providing they get past Atlanta on Sunday. Green Bay will have a chip on their shoulder should they meet the Seahawks at Lambeau Field, BTW...

Nate Silver, who accurately picked the outcome of this presidential election also picked the Hawks to oppose the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, with the Patriots winning. I'll chalk his prediction up to East Coast bias. I somehow doubt that the Pats will even get there.

10. Go Hawks! Wilson is doing great. Shanahan made a real bad call letting RG3 play on last week and it was such a good game up to that point.

And ban MikeBoyScout for going off topic on a Hawks/sports post. Can there be nothing that unites us Mike? You are pathetic.

Posted by: Leftover on January 11, 2013 10:24 PM
11. Oh and ban demokid @7 for the same reason. Negative people like these guys who cannot ever give it a rest even on a good natured Hawks post, should not be allowed to comment at all.

Posted by: Leftover on January 11, 2013 10:38 PM
12. Pudge is the only one who bans and he has become disengaged here.

Banning those who bring it on shows principles, but only if there are ground rules established and keeping the discussion civil instead of throwing out cheap insults and taunts. SP would have more respect if there are ground rules that are defended and those who abuse the civility afforded here are banned accordingly, IMHO. If the shoe fits, wear it, Jim and Ron or whoever posts. They don't need to control all - Pudge did that more than necessary, but a referee of some sort increasingly appears to be needed.

13. MikeBS @ 6:

I'm working in Santa Barbara right now... Jerry Brown has NOT solved the deficit. He's got his increased taxes, which was "half" of the solution. The other half, lower spending, still has not passed the Legislature. So whilst there is a plan, it's not at all certain it will happen and be the first non-deficit budget for this state in the last 5-6 years.

Lots of people didn't cash out their stock options at the end of last year, either, since the tax increases would have hit them hard. Cost California quite a bit of GDP...

Posted by: Shanghai Dan on January 12, 2013 09:00 AM
14. Well, MikeBS is a fringe-leftist and, by definition, a kool aid drinking liar. Only a complete idiot would believe what he posted.

That said, Wilson was clearly and statistically the best choice at the end of the pre-season.

The other guy played. Wilson played.

The other guy wasn't even in the same ballpark. Starting Wilson was a no-brainer from the get-go.

By all appearances, he's an exceptional young man, a leader, a very hard worker and I wish him the best. He can take the 'hawks all the way.

Good luck to the team, to Pete Carroll and the entire organization.

Posted by: Hinton on January 12, 2013 09:39 AM
15. Win or lose, the future of this team looks very bright. But I'm not sure who is the biggest surprise this year, Pete Carroll or Russell Wilson.

16. Lots of people didn't cash out their stock options at the end of last year, either, since the tax increases would have hit them hard. Cost California quite a bit of GDP...

Hey, Dan -- could you provide a ballpark figure for how much GDP was lost due to uncashed stock options?

Posted by: scottd on January 12, 2013 10:07 AM
17. Hi Scottd,

I know at least 5 people at the company I'm working with didn't cash in at least $1+ million in stock options, each. And about a dozen who were looking to cash in between $400,000 and $1,000,000 who chose not to, because of the additional tax (which was retroactive, by the way). That's at least $10 million of GDP I personally know about.

In one case, one of the individuals was planning on buying a bigger house, and renting their older, smaller one out. So there's some lingering impact as well...

Is it a huge amount? No. But it's one small company (with ~300 employees). And this kind of statistic never shows up in the balance sheet. How many at Facebook and other companies decided not to cash out because of the increased tax, or to cash out in much smaller amounts over a longer time, to avoid the additional 3% tax? We'll never know.

FWIW, CA income tax is now 13.3% at the top end. Add in top marginal Federal rates, and the combined income tax load in CA is 53%. Add in SSI/FICA and taxation reaches nearly 60%.

The bigger picture, though, is that the deficit is NOT solved. Taxes are raised - but the other half of the equation, spending cuts, have yet to be implemented. The State is still in deficit as it sits today, and from talking with long-term residents here (Democrat and Republican), CA will probably not pass the matching spending cuts and will beg/plead for even more taxes.

Posted by: Shanghai Dan on January 12, 2013 10:39 AM
18. Dan: Cashing out a stock option is a stock transaction. You obtain stock at a discounted price and then sell it. Stock transactions are not part of GDP.

In any case, you haven't demonstrated that there is a significant impact due to your 5 friends and others like them. They'll eventually cash out (or risk losing big time by not being diversified).

FWIW, CA income tax is now 13.3% at the top end. Add in top marginal Federal rates, and the combined income tax load in CA is 53%.

No... the top marginal rate in CA is 53%. The combine income tax load is the total income tax paid (federal and state) divided by total income. It's much smaller than 53%; it's less than 20%.

The bigger picture, though, is that the deficit is NOT solved...The State is still in deficit as it sits today

Wrong again. The current fiscal year (ending on Jun 30) is projected to show a surplus. No new legislation is needed for that result.

19. From one of the blogs I read daily:

Seattle Seahaws @ Atlanta Falcons (2) is the Sunday morning game at 1pm PST. Seattle is the 11-5 team everyone should fear while Atlanta is 13-3 team nobody fears. Two years ago the Falcons went 13-3, had the top seed, and got throttled at home. Seattle in December was averaging 50 points per game for the first three games. They then won a tough road playoff game last week after falling behind 14-0 and rattling off 24 unanswered points. Atlanta has a high octane offense and a questionable defense. Seattle has Russell Wilson as a rookie surprise leading a good offense, but the Seahawks are known for Pete Carroll building a nasty defense. After a 6-5 start Seattle won 5 straight to close the regular season. Mike Smith and Matt Ryan have had five straight winning seasons together, with this being their fourth playoff trip in that span. Yet they have never won a playoff game, and the critics will never be silenced until they do. Atlanta tight end Tony Gonzalez most likely will retire after the season, and the first ballot Hall of Famer desperately wants a win. Yet he may not get it today if the Seattle defense turns Matty Ice into slush. (Prediction: Upset special, Seahawks win outright.)

*Emphasis mine

psst: Go BROWNS! (Yes, I know)

20. ... Speaking of the blogs/sites I read daily. I would gladly post that list and just as gladly look at the sites our loud lefty's read. Sometimes our information is just so/too polar opposite...

21. ragnar: I agree with you vs Atlanta -- not so sure vs SF.

I also think listing regularly read blogs would interesting. Maybe one of the front pagers could start a thread on this topic.

Posted by: scottd on January 12, 2013 01:10 PM
22. The odds appear to be with the Seahawks. GB vs. SF is pick-em. No matter who wins, the Seahawks would play on the road next weekend.

I am not sure which opponent would be the toughest, but think both of them had better be ready to play the road team with the most momentum.

23. ragnar: I agree with you vs Atlanta

I wish I knew enough about it for you to agree with me. However, you do agree with Eric If you scroll back through his site, you'll see he does NFL posts every week.

See you are wrong as usual. Way to go Ravens! Doesnt't look like I will have to choose between Pack and Hawks. I would rather have Hawks, assuming they win, have to play in SF than the frozen tundra.

26. Take it to horseass.org, Louis !

Are you trying to drown out the moonbat beyotches (tensor, mike bs,stevie, demokid, et. al.) ?

Excerpts of an article from Howie Carr - he hits the nail on the head;

"Actually, the term "middle class" has become somewhat obsolete in the layabout Obama regime. There are only two classes now: the working and the nonworking classes. There are shades of gray at the margins -- retired people can still be working class, as are the truly disabled. But by and large it's very easy to tell which class you're in.

If your first paycheck of 2013 was smaller than your last of 2012, you're working class. If your first welfare check of 2013 was the same as your last of 2012, you're nonworking class -- a Democrat, in other words."

Back to the topic of the post; Seahawks are starting out slow - as they did last week. I am hoping for some turnovers and then watch their offense led by Russel Wilson work its magic !

How am I wrong. I didn't predict a Seahawk win. I hoped for a Seahawk win, and did qualify my statement, which is a lot different then your definitive that the Broncos were going all the way. Sorry, even in your rebuttal, you are wrong, as usual.

29. Adios' 'Hawk amigos...for now; see you in 7-months. You've given us a unity by your spectactular play all year and we can't wait to get on board again next year. Thank you for the thrills and excitement...stay healthy (and out of jail). :)

30. @29 "your spectactular play all year"

It was a great season to be a Seahawk fan. It was such a fun year, a great game and the future looks so bright that yesterday's loss was easy to take.

"we can't wait"

Yup! Meanwhile, it'll be a very interesting off-season.

31. @ 28. Since your prediction was about as correct as mine, you are wrong, as usual. Thanks for equivocating nonetheless.
