Election Angst, Fearing the Future

Two days after the election and I am still depressed. I share "National Review" writer Victor Davis Hanson's concern that we may have crossed the dependency line where more voters are takers than payers. We are headed down a slippery slope of out of control spending and debt without the political leadership or will to even seriously discuss a recovery plan.

This condition can go on for years, perhaps decades, Greece didn't go belly up over night. But at some point, the economic system corrects itself. How? Two ways: inflation, the most insidious tax of all and/or default. Look to post WWI Germany and Argentina for examples. Economic Pollyanna's hope for no pain alternatives such as growing the economy but this works only if we stop adding to the debt. Another is a technological breakthrough like super cheap and abundant green energy. Neither is likely.

Billions spent on the presidential and congressional races resulted in stalemate. The next milestone is the 2014 mid-term election. I saw on TV election night photos of five potential candidates for president in 2016. No wonder I fear for the future. There is hope for the so-called "Grand Bargain" that President Obama and Speaker Boehner almost agreed to last year. One blogger I found has an interesting post regarding the chance for rebirth of this compromise on spending, debt reduction and taxes. See: Grand Bargain II. Nevertheless, I am not optimistic mainly because reducing a $16 trillion debt on its way to $20 trillion requires a disciplined long term plan but Congress reconstitutes every two years plus fiscal discipline is not a natural trait of any legislature.

Some related, "I told you so." Clear Fog posts:

2. "Greece didn't go belly up over night."

It went belly up when it borrowed a lot of money from the banksters so that they could join the EU. Then the economic crash came and the banksters got bailed out by the workingman -- but REFUSED to cut any deals with Greece unless they cut social services and danced to the banksters tune.

Do you see anything wrong with this picture? The banks get welfare from the public but accuse the public of being lazy hucksters when they want their own bailout.

You, Mr. Peterson, should feel depressed, for you are nothing more than a useful idiot.

Oh, I'm very happy. Very, very happy. Not for the Bitter Wingnut Tears bullshit you and other LOSERS are crying in your beer over.

No, I'm happy because being much more competent than your side can ever dream of being, we presented a winning case for Hope & Change based upon a solid record of accomplishment.

Yeah, in addition to campaigning on stoopid "ideas" your side is hysterically incompetent.

The Unmitigated Disaster Known As Project ORCA

So, the end result was that 30,000+ of the most active and fired-up volunteers were wandering around confused and frustrated when they could have been doing anything else to help. Like driving people to the polls, phone-banking, walking door-to-door, etc. We lost by fairly small margins in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and Colorado. If this had worked could it have closed the gap? I sure hope not for my sanity's sake.
The bitter irony of this entire endeavor was that a supposedly small government candidate gutted the local structure of GOTV efforts in favor of a centralized, faceless organization in a far off place (in this case, their Boston headquarters). Wrap your head around that.

And yes, you sound like and are a sore loser; sore stoopid loser.

I seem to recall G.W.B claimed he had a mandate with his 286 Electoral College Vote. Well now it's clear that Barack Hussein Obama and his 303 Electoral College votes has a REAL mandate. =)

23. we may have crossed the dependency line where more voters are takers than payers.

Fuck you. Just FUCK YOU.

(I'm sure the delicate readers of this blog will all get the vapors over this. Well, fuck you, too)

All wealth - that is, ALL WEALTH - is created by LABOR. Nothing else. And the people who labor in this country have been systematically and relentlessly robbed by the smugly contented 'owners' in this society.

Vast swaths of those you obnoxiously call 'takers' - those who aren't elderly, or impoverished children, or disabled veterans - are people who work to exhaustion. People who work two or more jobs and see their children only when they're sleeping. People who have their already meager wages robbed from them with insidious regularity. People whose right to band together to secure their rights and fair wages are under unremitting attack. The right wing in this country has engineered a gigantic scam, a shameless vilification of working people and a vulpine lust for what little they've managed to secure for themselves.

This little fetish of yours, this 'takers' versus 'makers' meme, is profane.

Posted by: Dr. Liberal on November 8, 2012 08:47 PM
24. How high should tax rates go?

Tax rates presently are historically low.
See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Mariginal_Tax_Rate_for_Highest_and_Lowest_Income_Earners.jpg

And compared to other, similar wealthy industrialized nations, our tax rates are incredibly low:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tax_Revenue_as_Share_of_GDP_for_OECD_Countries_in_2009.jpg

I personally think that tax rates on income above much more than a million per year should be confiscatory. The accumulation of vast wealth, and the profoundly asymmetric skewing of wealth and income - the vast majority going to a vanishingly small few - is a direct threat to our democracy.

Moreover, the payroll tax ceiling should be increased dramatically, if not abolished.

Tax on capital gains and dividends should be as high or higher than that on earned income.

Why are the wealthy resistant to bearing their fair share of the burden? Is greed a prerequisite of wealth? Is that why the wealthy appear generally unwilling to bear their fair share of the burden?

41. How Many Businesses Have Announced Closings or Layoffs Since Obama Won A Second Term?

• Westinghouse - Westinghouse Anniston, the contractor responsible for shutting down Anniston's chemical weapons incinerator, has reduced its workforce by another 50 employees.

• Research in Motion Limited - Research in Motion Ltd., the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, laid off about 200 people at its U.S. headquarters in Irving on Wednesday, according to a source close to the company who did not want to be named.

• Lightyear Network Solutions - More than one dozen employees at a Pikeville company lost their jobs this week. Officials with Lightyear Network Solutions said they are consolidating offices in Louisville and Pikeville to save money.

• Providence Journal - The Providence Journal Co. laid off 23 full-time workers Wednesday as part of a cost-cutting effort, including 16 members of the Providence Newspaper Guild and 7 non-union employees.

• Hawker Beechcraft - The company says 240 employees will lose their jobs with the closing of Hawker Beechcraft Services facilities in Little Rock, Ark.; Mesa, Ariz.; and San Antonio, Texas.

• Boeing (30% of their management staff) - Boeing Co.BA +1.24% said Wednesday it plans to employ 30% fewer executives at its Boeing Defense, Space & Security unit by the end of 2012 compared to 2010 levels.

• CVPH Medical Center - CVPH Medical Center has handed pink slips to 17 employees. The layoffs -- nine in management and eight hourly staffers -- are part of an effort to "help bolster the hospital's financial position in 2013 and beyond," a press release said.

• US Cellular - The move will result in 980 job cuts at U.S. Cellular, with 640 in the Chicago area, according to a spokeswoman. The cuts are slightly under 12 percent of the approximately 8,400 total employees U.S. Cellular had at the end of the third quarter.

• Momentive Performance Materials - About 150 workers at Sistersville's Momentive Performance Materials plant will be temporarily laid off later this month, officials said this week.

• Rocketdyne - About 100 employees at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, most of whom work in the San Fernando Valley, were laid off Wednesday in response to dwindling government spending on space exploration, the company said. The layoffs were effective immediately, and 75 percent of them came at the facilities on Canoga and De Soto avenues, which employ about 1,100 people. The company has six sites across the Valley.

• Brake Parts - The leader of an automotive parts plant in Lincoln County has told state officials that there are plans to lay off 75 workers starting in late December...The layoffs are expected to start Dec. 28 and continue in the first quarter of 2013

• Vestas Wind Systems - Vestas Wind Systems A/S (VWS) is seeking to sell a stake of as much as 20 percent and said it's reducing headcount by 3,000 to raise the staff cuts by the biggest wind turbine maker to almost a third over two years.

• Husqvarna - Husqvarna AB (HUSQB), the world's biggest maker of powered garden tools, plans to cut about 600 jobs in a move that will save 220 million kronor ($33 million) a year by 2014.

• Center for Hospice New York - The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care plans to temporarily lay off as many as 40 employees next year as it embarks on a major renovation of the inpatient unit at its Cheektowaga campus.

• Bristol-Meyers - Bristol-Myers Squibb ($BMY) is following up its lackluster third-quarter results with almost 480 layoffs. As Pharmalot reports, the company notified the New Jersey government that it would scale back in Plainsboro, which means the cuts will hit its sales operations.

• OCE North America - Trumbull printer- and scanning-equipment provider Oce North America, Inc. will lay off 135 workers in three Connecticut communities, including East Hartford, according to its notice with the state Labor Department.

• Darden Restaurants - The company, which was among those who had received an Obamacare waiver in the past, is looking to limit workers to 28 hours per week. A full time employee that is required to have health insurance (lest the employer pay a fine) works 30 hours per week, as defined by the Obamacare law.

• United Blood Services Gulf - United Blood Services Gulf South region, the non-profit blood service provider for much of south Louisiana and Mississippi, will lay off approximately 10 percent of its workforce. It was a hard decision to make according to Susan Begnaud, Regional Center Director for the Gulf South region.

Cool. So that's $235 billion a year. What do you suggest for the other $1100 billion a year in deficit spending? Anything? Or are you happy with $1+ trillion deficits for the next 4 years?

You simply don't want to address the root cause of our deficits: MASSIVE overspending. The Federal Government is getting about the same revenues it had back in the late 90s. Per-capita, and adjusted for inflation, it's receiving TWICE what it did back in the 50s. But we have record deficits. Why?

Spending.

So MikeBS, now that you've stated just going back to the Clinton tax rates is all you want, I guess the question becomes:

Do you want to live with $1+ trillion deficits OR do you want to cut spending?

The last Republican president, that guy who-cannot-be-named, and who was vacationing with Willard's money in the Caymans while the last Democratic President, Bill Clinton, was helping Barack Hussein Obama whup your ass, single-handedly turned a massive surplus into a massive deficit with tax cuts for rich guys and two wars (justified with a major defense of the homeland FAILURE).

And you have the temerity to bitch about big (but shrinking) deficits under Obama following the BUSH DEPRESSION?

After Saint Ronald Reagan tripled the deficit, and Bush Junior doubled it?

Puh-leez.

Clearly written by someone with no concept of hard work = reward.

Dear, you have no idea.
Just to let you in on a secret, I have two doctoral degrees, my wife one, (each one of them taking a tremendous amount of work) and we're in the top, say, 3-4% of income. I own my own business. I employ people, and pay them a living wage. I encourage them to unionize, but they haven't.

Your resentment runs deep. I would hate to be that hateful. I would hate to be that fearful.

Funny, I find Republicanism, conservatism, Teahaddism to be completely shaped by its adherents' greed and fear. Project much? I find liberalism to be a much happier, much more joyful, much more inclusive, much more just way of encountering the world.

I find the best organizing principles these:

-We are all in this together.
-Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
-From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

50. Look to post WWI Germany...

Now, let's not get carried away. After all, Germany entered a needless war because the un-elected son of a previous ruler had a court full of useless lackeys and yes-men to encourage his delusions of grandeur, a needlessly-overbuilt military to play with, and a rubber-stamp legislature which simply swallowed that dim son's lies about the need for war --

OK, you've got me on that one.

Billions spent on the presidential and congressional races resulted in stalemate.

I thought Karl Rove was a genius?

Many of the lightning bolts were aimed at none other than Karl Rove, the former Bush administration political genius who oversaw the deployment of nearly $400 million in campaign spending through outside groups American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS toward the presidential race and toward numerous Senate and House races.

"The billionaire donors I hear are livid," one Republican operative told The Huffington Post. "There is some holy hell to pay. Karl Rove has a lot of explaining to do ... I don't know how you tell your donors that we spent $390 million and got nothing."

Meanwhile, a famously loud and intransigent political faction took it in the teabags last Tuesday:

Although Lugar received a 77% lifetime conservative rating from the American Conservative Union - and 100% in more recent years - he was nevertheless painted as too liberal and accommodating. Among other sins, he had voted to confirm Obama's two Supreme Court nominees, supported the auto industry bailout and indicated sympathy for immigration law reform.

In contrast, Mourdock argued that "the time for being collegial is past, it's time for confrontation". He subsequently became infamous for his debate comment that "even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen". Although Mitt Romney easily won Indiana with more than 54% of the vote, Mourdock registered only 44% (barely half Lugar's last tally) in losing a very safe Republican Senate seat to Democrat Joe Donnelly.

Economic Pollyanna's hope for no pain alternatives such as growing the economy but this works only if we stop adding to the debt.

Yes, "voodoo economics" has been a complete failure. Thank you for admitting that, only 30 years late and several trillion dollars short.

But it's not just reality which fails you; your cherished ideals do no better:

Another is a technological breakthrough like super cheap and abundant green energy.

Wait -- it's not possible to build a perpetual-motion machine which runs on static electricity?!? How then can we possibly Go Galt?

Oh noes! pudge's mancrush has surrendered to teh eeevil math!

Sadly, and for reasons untold, neither the National Republican Congressional Committee nor the Washington State Republican Party stepped up to provide us with anything more than token support. To be frank, we were on our own, yet thanks to people such as you, we nearly overcame the odds. For this reason, I could not be prouder of my campaign team and the great people of Washington's 1st Congressional District.

With more than 50% of the votes counted so far, we have not conceded yet, but remain substantially behind at 53.33% - 46.67 %. At this point, it would take at least a minor miracle in the final vote tallies for us to come from behind to win. I have discussed the situation with my team and it is my current plan to call Suzan DelBene on Friday to concede the race and congratulate her on winning the congressional seat.

Like many Americans, I am stunned at the tough night so many on the conservative side had around the country on Tuesday, and that Barack Obama was re-elected as President. Sean Hannity remarked yesterday that he wondered if the "allure and appeal of socialism and redistribution of wealth has taken hold."

Yes, soshulism and redistributin has taken hold, and gosh darn it neither the National Republican Congressional Committee nor the Washington State Republican Party did any redistributin Koster's way, so America has failed Conservatism.

57. Wow, busy comment day.

Just want to point out something I've noticed in the wake of BO's reelection; something which is again confirmed from reading the comments here.

That is the impulse many lefties appear to feel to go around harassing the Right. I'm back in (grad) school thanks to the sh1tty Obama economy (don't worry about me though, the feds statistically assume I'm no longer an active job-seeker), and while my liberal peers don't seem as excited about Obama as I remember in 2008, their focus in the aftermath of Election 2012 is daring anybody to have a problem with his reelection. Boy were they going around looking to pick fights in the two days since; really spiteful and bad-neighbor-ly conduct from the tolerance crowd.

Other examples abound elsewhere, and I see here that this is confirmed yet again at SP with MBS, hiney, Dr. L and others having shown up at the eulogy to p1ss into the grave.

Not that we respected you before, fellas, but thanks for proving you're every bit as much of the caricature we always imagined.

64. I'm stunned by the thin skinned nature of conservatives.

Seems you folks on the right like to make snide and pitifully uninformed comments about 'takers' and 'makers', 'pullers' and 'riders', mimicking self-satisfied myths of the 'job creator' class of ubermenschen.

You all seem to be suffering under the smug myth that there is a thin strata of conservative, productive people being swamped by hordes of lazy, liberal and often brown people looking for 'free stuff'.

I would offer that you perhaps watch too much FoxNoise. This is the problem that got you in trouble on Tuesday night - all the way up to Willard himself. You guys are believing your own press releases, your 'unskewed' numbers, your myths of 'union thugs' and shiftless lazy liberals sitting around wanting flat screen TeeVees and bonghits, paid for by you hard-working conservatives - you're buying your own propaganda. You're living in a right wing bubble without tether to actual reality.

I would suggest you note the disconnect between productivity and real wages, the stagnation and decline of working peoples' real income, the family-threatening need for multiple jobs just to stay afloat, the rampant wage theft perpetrated by owners against workers, the systematic destruction of unions and collective bargaining, the cynical exploitation of the safety net by employers like Wal-Mart. And on and on.

You want an economy? One that isn't feudal? Then workers need to be paid fairly.

I would also suggest that you remove your heads from your posteriors and pay attention to the poisoning of the planet. Whether you want to admit it or not, the earth is warming, and human use of fossil fuels is causing it. The reason you need to accept that, beyond that fact that it is, you know, reality, is that young people believe it and are concerned about it - those same young people that formed the backbone of the coalition that destroyed your candidate Tuesday night. If you value your existence as a viable political entity, you'll let go of this manifestly stupid denialism and get out of the way of progress, get out of the way and start helping craft a solution.

I would also suggest you let go of this whole nativism thingy. Immigrants have always driven this nation's evolution, and the emerging Latino majority is no different. Think about it - a group of people so desirous of a better life that they're willing to risk death in a parched desert, being cooked in a cargo box, drowning, being shot at just to get here and participate and contribute - working and raising families and succeeding. Don't you want people like that on your team? I sure do. Moreover, no one has a choice - the reality is that the US is becoming more brown, more multi-hued, and you can either celebrate that, and win, or continue with the anti-immigrant, racist posture that is identified now with the right-wing, with you guys, and become a political afterthought.

Rush actuall said something truthful the other day, "We are outnumbered and losing ground."

So come on...instead of talking about canned food and bunkers, try this, when thinking about our shared country...

-We are all in this together.
-Treat others as you would be treated.
-From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

Come join us, we have work to do!

Do you really think that spelling 'shitty' as 'sh1tty' and 'piss' as 'p1ss' somehow make their use socially acceptable?

Really?

Maybe it is around here...but I would suggest that this is one more small but telling divorce from reality, one more convenient rationalization that you've constructed that is in fact getting in your way in terms of actually grasping, you know, reality.

If you want to say 'shitty' or 'piss', then do so. If you're moral code prevents this, then don't use those words. But the cutesie misspelling makes you look like a complete tool.

I'll take a break from Mittenfreude Friday! to communicate somewhat more reasonably with you, as you've shown yourself to be much better than the rest on this board.

Yes, politicians need to be held accountable. This is the promise of democracy which enables us to perfect our union and make this the greatest nation on the face of the earth.

But, Duffman, if you are supporting today's Republican party with its wingnut bent, you have been deceived, and deceiving you is neither in your interests nor the interests of our nation.

President Obama went in to this election with a significant record of accomplishment. Our position is dramatically better than when he came in to office. All this despite being confronted with an intransigent Republican opposition and vile accusations and race bating.

Turn off the Fox News and the wingnut radio and your mind may become more clear.
And for goodness sake, give up on being pudge's fanboy.

pudge supports John the rape thing Koster who said today
"I am equally stunned that we have legalized marijuana right here in our home state of Washington; and if the slim margin favoring the pro Referendum-74 vote holds up, we will have legalized same-sex marriages as well.
It seems obvious to me that we have swung wildly in the wrong political direction and that we are now at a point where our society WILL suffer the consequences inherent with bad law and liberal representation."

Koster is a bigoted fool who would like to see a woman who was raped to be legally forced to carry a pregnancy to term. That's just SICK Duffman. That's not what we are about. And that's not "conservative" it's radical BS.

Mark my words, things are getting better and will continue to get better because Democrats are using reality to guide their decisions and inclusiveness to drive our politics. That's the American way.

The last GOP deficit was $162 billion (FY2007). Since then, it's been deficits set-in-stone by the Democrats, and they've been over $1.2 trillion for the last 3 years, with the projection continuing at that level for at least the next 10 years.

So can you explain how a $162 billion deficit is so much worse than $1.2 trillion deficits?

Posted by: Shanghai Dan on November 9, 2012 08:12 AM

Can you explain to me why that is?

Posted by: red hiney monkey on November 9, 2012 08:17 AM
74. @72
Dan, I think you're having some difficulty with numbers. I think we reality-based liberals have this thing called 'arithmetic' that might be helpful. Also, we have calendars, so we know when thing happen.

Check this out (this site is helpful: http://home.adelphi.edu/sbloch/deficits.html)

2006-2007.......$500,679 (millions)
2007-2008.......$1,017,071
2008-2009.......$1,885,104
2009-2010.......$1,651,794
2010-2011.......$1,228,717
2011-2012.......$1,224,790

Note that annual deficits EXPLODED under George W. Bush, and have been shrinking under Barack Hussein Obama.

Moreover, when one looks at the source of the gigantic deficits (which were created by George W. Bush out of the surplus that Clinton/Gore bequeathed to him), they are overwhelmingly due to changes in the tax code that favor the rich, to wars, and to the Bush depression.

So that whole "deficits set-in-stone by Democrats" as you say, is complete bullshit.

Does that clarify things for you, Dan?

I would echo rhm's question for you, @73, as well.

I can honestly and proudly say that not one member of my family, not an aunt, uncle, cousin, child, niece nor nephew has taken one penny of welfare from this country. Through depression, tornadoes, widowhood we refused to put our hands in the pockets of our neighbors nor the country that welcomed us. You've never driven on a road or bridge in this nation for which you did not pay taxes to build and maintain?

You don't travel by airplane using our federally subsidized and federally regulated air transportation system?

You didn't attend public school?

See Rags, you didn't build that. A government elected for and by the people did, your hand was in MY pocket the whole time. And I'm fine with that. Just wish I could get a better return than RandRoid bullshit from it.

Faith-based welfare is ok in your book?

I recall George Romney received "welfare" for a spell when he came here from Mexico. This was revealed in an interview with his wife when she was asked her opinion of "welfare". After some checking - hmmm - yes it was federal relief aid for refugees that George drew on.

Did this "taint" Mitt Romney in any way?

96. What we did wrong:

- We underestimated the mainstream media
- We underestimated the Obama ground game
- We based our projections on 2010 believing they negated those of 2008
- We didn't connect the dots between our economic superiority and the social consequences of the utter failure that is Obama's economic naivete and incompetence.
- We didn't fight the hatefulness.
- We ignored the lies, thinking better of the American electorate.
- Our church's, particularly my Catholic Church, let us down. Yes, they came out strong at the end, but to whom? Their failures since Vatican II have emptied our pews. They have failed to teach the faith for 50 years and allowed the Biden mindset to foment. They have stopped teaching good/bad, right/wrong.
- We believed the American dream still exited: that anyone has the potential to succeed with hard work and that people still wanted that promise
- We underestimated the lure to 3 generations who have never known success and only known government largess. You can't beat Santa. The favorite Uncle who always brings presents trumps the common sense and demands of a practical parent every single time... for that moment of the gift, at least.

We own our defeat.

You OWN the consequences of your win.

The problem you have, as a nation of takers, is that you need us far more than we will ever need you.

Cheer amongst yourselves.

Who do these folks in Florida sound like?

For GOP stalwarts, the painful dawn of Four More Years

There was no survival food, but they were planning on stocking up on guns and ammo.

"We'll probably get a long gun and a short gun," Emma said. "We've already got our concealed carry permits; we just need to be fingerprinted." That last step was the one that made her hesitant. "Once you are registered, they know who you are. Most firearms now are chipped" for tracking.

They worried that Obama would now downsize the military -- "MacDill is going to be a ghost town," Emma said of the Air Force base in Tampa -- to build his own military consisting of the National Guard, the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration.

"Right-wing nut" is what Emma playfully calls herself, a reference to Obama once categorizing extreme conservatives as fringe. John is less playful, especially when it comes to Obama.

"This guy, who is he?" asked John, at the kitchen counter. "He's Buddhist, he's Muslim, he's Christian. When he addresses the Muslims, he speaks Muslim. When he addresses blacks, he goes into that black dialect. It's creepy."

He stirred his oatmeal. "To know this guy is going to have power for the next four years, that's disturbing."

I applaud you trying, but that's really weak sauce.
For example: "Our church's, particularly my Catholic Church, let us down." ain't really taking ownership is it Rags?

And on top of blaming your church for letting you down, you really don't seem to understand that your church is not a democracy that is interested in the opinions of the women who belong to it.

In 3 of the 9 confession points you use "underestimated" which is extremely weak sauce. If you would have 'overestimated', so what?

Seriously, if you stopped reading and listening to the conservative entertainment complex you might figure it out. The American electorate heard loud and clear what your party proposed as an alternative, and it was rejected in a landslide. Gekko/Galt lost everyone of their home states and 10 of the 11 swing states.

99. This is really a marquee thread at this point. At last count there were 98 posts, of which 60 (or 61%+) are hateful, profanity-laced diatribes by gloating leftists (at least that I recognize).

MikeBoyScout tops the list with 31 so far (32%) and is thus either unemployed or cheating his boss (maybe taxpayers too?)--either way someone is being cheated (P.S. your challenge is still lame, and no one has forgotten your embarrassingly wrong and un-self aware accusation of paying for my self-funded private education).

Dr. Tedious has 22 (22%+) and the list is rounded out by other dweebs.

Really though, I think this is a big development: they are even more graceless in victory than they are in defeat. They have completely taken over the SP thread at this point; shitting on us is their victory lap; it's how they celebrate. It's become one of those bad sports rivalries where all one side has left is to rejoice in the other's misfortunes. The result of all of these false numbers and inaccurate ground reports is simple: Mitt Romney had no idea what was coming on election day and his false sense of confidence directly translated into how the campaign operated in the closing weeks. In the words of one source, it was a con job. As David Mamet famously said, "If you're in the con game and you don't know who the mark is ... you're the mark." Mitt Romney had no idea what was coming.

So again - how do you explain that a budget deficit of $161 billion was bad, but never-ending $1+ trillion deficits are good? What's the solution to it? I know you just want to dance around in glee - but that doesn't solve anything.

MikeBS @ 75: Don't know who that person is, but what's wrong with the numbers posted? Was the deficit for FY2007 - the last GOP deficit - $161 billion or not? Have the FY2009 and later deficits been over $1.2 trillion or not?

Thank you for the perfect example of the liberal mindset. What matters is getting INTO power, not what the results are once you're there.

Thanks to that mindset, we've had a President who has not only added 65% to our national debt in his first 4 years (and is on track to have increased it by 125% over his two terms), but greatly increased taxation on the poor and working class, saw an historic rise in food stamps and poverty, higher unemployment, a reduction in the size of the workforce (permanent unemployment), a loss in the value of the USD, and arming of our enemies who kill our own police, troops, and ambassadors.

But hey, you won so that can all be ignored. It's about the trappings of leadership and power, not the responsibility to use that leadership wisely. You won, we have to sit in the back of the bus and live with it, right? Even when you steer it into a telephone pole...
