Scandal At The Washington State Department Of Revenue?

Here's the story.

A major political player in Washington state got a big favor from the state Department of Revenue, an insider alleges, when the state tax agency botched a $2 million assessment on his private plane.

The clock ran out on the tax bill, which had to be delivered by the end of last year. It wasn't until after the statute of limitations had expired that the agency decided that the airplane was taxable, according to Dennis Redmon, a 29-year employee of the agency.   Redmon is going public with a whistleblower complaint he has filed with the state auditor's office, calling it a flagrant example of what has become a routine occurrence at the agency in the last three years.  The tax compliance officer says as much as $35 million in taxes have been excused for taxpayers with pull at a time when the state is reeling from the worst budget trouble since the Great Depression.

A few more details for those not familiar with Washington state politics:   The article says that the beneficiary of that "botch" is a big donor to Democrats and "progressive" causes, and that there are others, similar to this donor, who have gotten similar treatment.  Oh, and the person running the department in the last two years?   Suzan DelBene, currently running for congress in my district.  (Local talk show host John Carlson called her Suzan DelMoney recently, which is unfair, but too funny not to pass on.)

This error (if it was an error) reminds me of a story from my time in Chicago in the late 1960s.  I was volunteering at a tutoring center and got to know some of the other volunteers.  One was a woman with a poor driving record, poor enough so that she was afraid she might lose her license.  One evening I heard her asking another volunteer, an attorney who was familiar with City Hall, if he could help her.   He had a very practical answer for her problem; he could ask one of the clerks to make a "mistake" and put her files into two separate folders.  That way, no one would notice that together her infractions put her close to losing her license.  (I assume that some cash might be exchanged to make this happen, but did not inquire into the details.)

I admired the ingenuity of the scheme, though I disapproved of it (but not enough to say so to my friends).  If anyone happened to put the two files together, it would just look like one of those filing mistakes that can happen in any organization.  And, I was pretty sure that enough people had access to the files so that it would be impossible to pin the "mistake" on the person who had made it.

That kind of scheme was routine in Chicago at the time, but less common here, then and now.  But perhaps we are catching up with the big cities, as so many here want us to do.

1. Suzan DelBene, not Susan.

2. DelBene's corrupt Department of Revenue shows she hasn't earned the voters' trust. Has she made a statement yet about this?
There are 1,000s of small-business people who aren't asking for 'favors' from the DOR and don't want them. DelBene apparently ran the DOR either corruptly or she was so incompetent she didn't know how messed up the department was. Neither is a good reason.

3. Um, Editor, what you have cited is an entity known as a "documented fact," and thus entirely inappropriate for inclusion in a post at Sound Politics -- doubly inappropriate, in a post (1) here by (2) Jim Miller.

If you read this post, you'll see that the standard of "proof" here is whether an undocumented assertion made here and now agrees with an undocumented assertion from another time and place. (However, it is good to see Jim Miller and Sound Politics come out in favor of luxury taxes. I'm sure Kemper Freeman, Jr. will pay Tim Eyeman to push an Initiative on increasing enforcement of said taxes soon, and we can read all about it in Mr. Eyeman's posts here.)

4. tensor, once again we see the party that claims to want to pay more in taxes not wanting to pay them, leaving that job to the rest of us who aren't 'connected'. No wonder they raised our taxes in 2010. So these wealthy democrat donors wouldn't have to. These people could qualify to work in the Obama Administration, if you get my drift.

5. It must really suck being Tensor. Good post Jim!

Tensor~ Tim Eyeman to push an Initiative on increasing enforcement of said taxes soon, and we can read all about it in Mr. Eyeman's posts here.

Who is Mr Eyeman?

7. But of course. The whole ideology of the Left is a scandal. Anyone who thinks it is right to hand out special privledges to some based on selected traits and affiliations at the expense of others is corrupt. And anyone who thinks it is proper to vote based on skin color instead of ideas is corrupt. Someone this corrupt will have no problem abusing power to hand out special favors based on politics or to fraudulently change the outcome of an election.

Once you've corrupted yourself with the ideology of the Left, affiliation, class, patronage, graft and nepotism become everyday operation and order. The ends justify the means. Bill Ayers 101.

The Left, taking us backwards every day. Quite feudal really.

8. Concerned Editor - Thanks for catching that spelling mistake. (Don't know why I made it, since I usually get her name right.)

9. Tensor's right. It's probably not corruption and insider politics that is the reason for the poor tax collection. It's most likely pure incompetence... :)

10. Tensor: Please read the original article at the Washington Wire.

http://washingtonstatewire.com/blog/jet-setting-political-contributor-saves-2-million-when-department-of-revenue-botches-taxes-on-private-plane-whistleblower-alleges/#.UHR8650EtDI.email

"This person got caught with their pants down, with a very nice aircraft. It is acknowledged by all parties, including his tax advocates, that he owes the money. But he can buy his way out of it because he has paid enough money to politicians in Washington state. And that is about as nasty a fact pattern as it gets."

After reading the article, I think most will agree that we are talking about corruption at the Department of Revenue under Suzan Delbene's leadership.

11. http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/10/new-okeefe-video-obama-campaign-staffer-caught-helping-activist-vote-twice/

Obama campaign caught trying to help a voter vote in 2 different states. Why are we not surprised? Hillary's campaign learned obama is not averse to pulling every dirty trick in the book.

If it's not DelBene's corruption in the DOR, it's Obama's at the voting booth.

15. 'Scandal'? Why would you call this a scandal; when it really portrays the normal course of business. :)

Posted by: Duffman on October 11, 2012 06:25 AM
16. Astute observation, Duffman. What normal people would consider abject dishonesty and/or scandal is nothing more than business as usual for leftist Dimocrats.

17. I sincerely hope our local right wing spends every day until the election demanding greater scrutiny of how taxes on the rich are enforced. After all, Jim Miller can't see how that could ever possibly rebound against the Republicans, so obviously that cannot happen.

18. You have brought up a very fantastic details , thanks for the post.

19. @ 17:

"the rich": Leftist code for small and medium-sized business owners who attempt to earn money by opening businesses, taking risks and creating jobs. These are the engine of our economy, but are (for some reason) hated by Dimocrats.

the real rich: Old money urban liberals and leftists who live off trust fund money earned (by others) decades or centuries ago. Many of these have never worked a day in their lives.
