Michelle -- Good to bring up the local races. Hope more coverage comes, outside of the District 1 race. I really hope that Burner isn't one of the choices there. That would be a catastrophe if she had a chance of winning it.

You already know I am not one to urge anything in schools beyond actual subjects kids need to learn to understand where the come from and the tools they need to succeed (yep, the basics, especially CIVICS), but perhaps instead of spoon feeding them the easy and yummy courses like diversity and sex education we, as a nation, ought to go back to basic manners, decorum and respect. Liberals always use the "but they're not getting it from their parents at home" excuse for sex education so how could they possibly object.
My oldest son had 4 years in public school (7th - 10th) after and before Catholic school and one of his first incredulous impressions was that the teachers wore jeans and t-shirts and were addressed by their first names. This was a shock and anathema to him. But isn't that where the lack of respect starts - with adults leveling themselves with children's friends? If no one at that early age delineates the difference how are children to know?
It's easy to point out ONLY abortion as the cause of our coarsening because if one doesn't respect the most basic element of a culture, life, it's hard to imagine respect for much else, but I also believe there's much more: edgy fashion, vulgarity for shock that's turned into vulgarity as conversation both which erodes innocence in our children earlier and earlier, an immature generation that has little or no mechanism to differentiate between what they see in video games from real life - nor do they understand the potential consequences for not being able to tell the difference, the gang culture that proceeded from a glorification of the PRISON culture and yes defacing ones body with tattoo's. I know our liberal fiends here will take exception to this, but I truly believe the coarsening of political discourse started with the proudly and loudly proclaimed and enacted "scorched earth" policy under the Clinton's with the gleeful help of Carville. I prefer to imagine and give them the benefit of the doubt that they did not anticipate the internet explosion, the new media of blogs and Twitter. The internet allows and encourages unfiltered rudeness and ugliness with it's anonymity.
And then of course there's the assault on God... on FAITH. The reminders of good behavior, of respectful attitudes of decorum are GONE. I truly believe one of the first lost reminders was when Catholic nuns stopped wearing habits: they were a reminder and folks of all faiths and no faith just simply behaved better in their presence.
There is simply no reason for this country to have devolved so fast and so sadly into such crude, crass and rude culture.
And as we have devolved so far in such short a time, where does that leave us, where will it lead us?
Children live what they learn. Such a trite little remark... but look where it led us.
