Worst States And Best States For Black Unemployment
Department of Labor has released a report on
and the news is grim. Walter Mead has a
of the findings in the report, but does not say much about the differences between the states.
Those differences are worth discussing because the variation among states is so high.
The five worst states for black unemployment are Wisconsin (25.0 percent), Michigan (23.9 percent),
Minnesota (22.0 percent), Maine (21.4 percent), and Washington (21.1 percent). All five are
significantly above the national rate for blacks, 16.2 percent. (In May, the comparable rates for
whites and Hispanics were 8.0 and 11.9, respectively.)
The five best states for black unemployment are New Hampshire (10.3 percent), Hawaii (9.6 percent),
Idaho (8.0 percent), Wyoming (6.2 percent) and Alaska (5.4 percent). (The map at the end of the
report has Arizona at 10.2 percent, which contradicts the text. I am fairly sure that's a mistake
in the map.)
(There are no estimates for four states with very small black populations, Montana, North Dakota,
South Dakota, and Vermont.)
I am not going to draw any grand conclusions from these differences, since I don't know enough
about the policies of those ten states. But I will observe that most leftists would consider the
five worst states "progressive" (I would say reactionary), and that most leftists would have other adjectives
for the five best states, except, of course, for Hawaii.
And I will add one small point about Washington state: My home state has the
highest minimum wage in
the United States, thanks to a labor-union-backed initiative. That may be one of the reasons that
black unemployment is higher here than in most other states.

1. I think WA being in the top 5 is quite strong evidence that the leadership in WA is clearly racist - they are not creating an atmosphere conducive to the hiring of African Americans.
2. Perhaps if the state was being run by conservatives, we might find ourselves in a better category, where this issue is concerned. Clearly the leftists aren't cutting it.
I agree, Dan. Leftists desire to keep black folks chained to the ghetto by condemning successive generations to failed public schools and dead-end welfare programs.
Conversely, conservatives prefer education vouchers, which were a huge success among black families in Washington DC...that is, until the Obama administration killed the program to placate their teacher's union pals.
My hope is that one day soon blacks will revolt against the twin Dimocrat plantations of ignorance and bondage.
Juan Williams in his book "Enough" goes through a litany of ways in which liberalism has been bad for the black community, even though Williams remains somewhat a lib.
Education is the big one of course. Black parents often support school choice, while the left will give up the gov't education monopoly only from cold, dead hands.
Another not often mentioned is that blacks are more likeley to be crime victims. That means gun control is a disaster for blacks. I work in a blue collar union job, and quite a few of my co-workers are black. Many if not most are gun owners, sensibly wishing to protect what they work hard for.
And last but not least, it seems to me that we're skating dangerously close to a return to open & overt racism. Eventually Dems habit of playing the race card will take a toll. Check the comments threads in the Seattle Times whenever there is a high-profile crime involving a black perp, like the bus-tunnel beating. You'll see what I'm talking about. We've had decades of progress, but it can easily go backwards if we take it for granted.
6. It's amazing that we can look at the same data and come to such disparate conclusions. Jim wants to blame so-called progressives for the "worst" statistics, while suggesting the "best states" are better because of ...something else (*hint* conservative). Besides the odd suggestion that New Hampshire is conservative, I am struck by the obvious. Each of these states has extremely small black populations. Michigan alone has a larger black population than all of them. I'd venture a guess that even very white Minnesota and Wisconsin have considerably larger black populations. My thought is that, based on those populations, the percentages are more easily skewed positive or negative. And, Travis, your assertion is beyond lunacy. Blame the Dems for calling out racism? Do you tell Teabaggers to shut up with their whining? i for one am sick of them. Tell me, why are you comfortable giving a pass to racists to attack black people? Blaming it on Dems is low. It is typical blame the victim mentality and until you right wingers get over that weakness, race will pop up because I, and others like me, will never tire of calling a racist a racist. BTW, check out what banner all the white supremacists run under. It's not Democratic.
7. I LIVE IN VA, A STATE WITH A BLACK POPULATION OF ABOUT 20%. I WORK IN NORTHERN VA, WHERE A GREAT MANY OF MINORITIES (BLACK, HISPANIC ASIANS, ETC LOVE). MANY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE HIGH EDUCATED AND VERY SUCCESSFUL. THEIR COLOR HAS NOT BEEN A CHALLENGE, BECAUSE THEY DON'T USE IT AS AN EXCUSE. THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE LIBERALS IS CORRECT, THEY LIKE THE BLACKS TO BE SUBSERVIENT TO THEM SO THEY CAN BE CONTROLLED. DC SPENDS OVER $20,000 PER YEAR PER STUDENT, WITH PRECIOUS LITTLE SUCCESS BECAUSE THEY PLAY THE RACE CARD AND DON'T ENCOURAGE STUDENTS SUCCEED. MD HAS THE RICHEST BLACK DOMINATED COUNTY IN THE COUNTRY, AND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO EXCEL IN SCHOOL, AND DOES NOT DUMB DOWN EXPECTATIONS JUST BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS ARE MINORITIES. THIS RECESSION HAS HURT BLACKS MORE BECAUSE FOR MANY OF THEM, THEY WERE GIVEN A FALSE PROMISE OF SUCCESS WITHOUT HAVE THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO ENDURE AN ECONOMIC DOWNTOWN. I WAS RAISED TO RESPECT PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR CHARACTER, NOT THEIR COLOR. FOR TOO MANY BLACK POLITICIANS, IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO STRESS RACE RATHER THAN TO ACTUALLY HELP THESE GROUPS.
