Diversity Santa at Nordstrom's

This Christmas come get your kids' picture taken at Nordstrom's with Diversity Santa! That's right. You can choose with which race of Santa your kids will get their photos taken.

Now I'm all for diversity. I believe Santa, as a symbol of Christmas, a holiday celebrated by races and cultures around the world, can and in fact should be portrayed as Black, Asian, Indian, Hispanic and any other color you can name.

I just question why they have to make such a big deal about it. Liberals love to claim how they love diversity and want to extinguish racism but by continuing to make such a big deal about race, underscoring the fact that there's a "Diversity Santa" or having people mark a bubble denoting their race, all the while continuing to scream that America is racist (never mind that we're the first "White" country in history to elect a Black person as president and the wealthiest woman in the county is Black) they continue to perpetuate the very same racism they pretend to want to eradicate.

I guarantee that if the census stops asking people what race they belonged to, if liberals stop making such a big deal about race, and we all just focused on being Americans and being the best we can be, Dr. King's (he was a Republican, btw) dream of people being judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin, will come true.

UPDATE: Some people seem to be questioning my claim that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican. The National Black Republican Association has made the claim and they have confirmed it with his niece, Alveda King. Now I suppose no one can ever really know since Dr. King is dead and voting is a private matter but the fact is, most Blacks during King's time were Republicans and Dr. King surrounded himself with many prominent Republicans. I'll even go further and say that, if people knew their history (both past and current) as it relates to the Democrats and race, a lot more of them would be calling the Democrats the slavery party. I'd encourage you to read Wayne Perryman's book "Unfounded Loyalty" to learn some of this history.

1. Nordstrom still cant come up with a disabled, Irish/Indian santa for me. BAH HUMBUG!

2. I wonder when they're going to come out with Muslim Santa.

Posted by: MarkGriswold on November 17, 2009 09:06 PM
3. Why not just have a Santa with a face half beige and half light brown. That way no one gets offended and there won't be long lines because incorrect color Santa continually has to get out of the chair to allow his colleague of the politically correct shade to take his place.

Only in Seattle does something this moonbatty occur.

5. "(he was a Republican, btw)"

I'm learning that when something on SP sounds ridiculous, especially from Mark the Dow-slanderer, I should check the source.

There is no proof of King's party affiliation. He did fight for Democrats and against Republicans throughout his career. And his beliefs are even more strongly aligned with today's Democrats and against today's Republicans.

6. I might add that if King really was once a Republican, that says far more about how the Republican party has changed over the past 50 years than anything about King.

7. I just question why they have to make such a big deal about it.

Seems like you're the one making a big deal about it!

8. Is talking about race at all wrong? Is recognizing that, despite Oprah and Obama, it still matters -- in a thousand ways -- if one is black in America, is that a threat to King's dream? I do not udnerstand why conservatives rush to be the first to say "content of their character" seemingly in hope that that will win, or at least end, the conversation.

9. Bruce,

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a registered Republican. And he would most likely still be, since Republicans represent the color-blind ideal.

There's a reason I call the Democrats the Slavery Party. Because it is the truth, regardless of your protestations to the contrary.

A most telling question: did you support California Prop 209 (spearheaded by Ward Connerly)? Which party supported it, which party opposed it?

Your color-blind society approach is in those answers...

10. Do they have a Peruvian Santa? Well, even if they do, I still will pass on it. My entrepreneurial latin american emigrant dad didn't teach us to focus on our race. He pretty much made it clear that you go about your business and just succeed. Period. Because we are all Americans first. Our individual ethnicities are a very distant second or third. Or fourth.

11. Btw, good link, Shanghai. There are some truly awesome people listed on that NBRA site. Among the many, Herman Cain, Dr. Alveda King, and my all-time favorite American inventor, George Washington Carver. I read that Carver would go into his lab and ask God to show him what to do with the peanut. And God did. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom".

12. So, uh, Bruce... you kind of remind me of that clown "None of the facts support my position."

Hopefully, you've learned your lesson and will now STFU about things you know nothing about... which seems to mean most everything.

13. I think it only fair that they have a designated gay Santa too...and a right-to-life Santa...and a women's rights Santa...and, etc. et al. :)

14. I like #2's idea, a Muslim Santa. Maybe after the trials in NY, we could offer the defendants a job here.

Posted by: Petegoud on November 18, 2009 04:40 AM
15. I'm not sure Moslem Santa is a good idea.

If one left you a package under the tree, would you really want to open it without a bomb squad checking it out first?

16. What about a female Santa? Can't believe no one has proposed that so far. Or maybe a transgendered Santa? Or actually, there could even be an atheist Santa, one who removes Christ entirely from Christmas.

Posted by: katomar on November 18, 2009 05:51 AM
17. Only further proof that the Democrat/Identity party is the one perpetuating a racist atmosphere in this country. On one hand they say they want equality for all and a color blind society, on the other, they insist we hyphenate racial groups (categorizing) in order to promote their individuality. Is this not the definition of cognitive dissonance? If you're a "hyperventilating hyphenater", you're much closer aligned with this attitude than one of "I'm an American. Period". As long as racial agitator attitudes like those of Jesse Jackasson,Al Sharpton and SPLC's Morris Dees are mainstreamed as normal, don't look for much to change in the near future.

Posted by: Rick D. on November 18, 2009 06:09 AM
18. Oops, well, I guess Duffy covered the female Santa a few comments earlier.

19. Well to be political incorrect, I am not. Diversity is not! a founding principle of this country regardless of what the left says (and some conservatives also).
What makes our country great is not diversity but our unifying culture and principles.

23. This is another form of "progressive" lying about history and reality entirely -- Santa is from Norse/Northern European mythology and if other races can't handle the truth about that, then, well, that's just too bad. Posing Santa as other races is nonsense, and it also reveals INATE RACIAL BIAS for those who "demand another color" in Santa Claus. That Nordstrom's engaging in this is just sad, sad, sad, reeks of desperation in marketing.

Posted by: Nmaer on November 18, 2009 06:58 AM
24. I guess we could all start demanding that whenever anyone's depicted, they be 'redone' in whatever our special racist needs may be, but, well, that's, uhh, that's racist.

Let's see: photos of Martin Luther King should all be redone in texts as a White man, maybe a Chinaman. The Easter Bunny should be redone as a giant toad from South America. Whenever there's a photo of George Washington, he's to be redone as a handicapped female from Tazmania wearing a burkha...

...see where this is going...

26. Final suggestion: let's just do away with the traditional image of Santa and replace with image of our POTUS Obama in all stores and malls. He can bow to each child while transferring gifts in an equitable fashion. That would do it, I believe; the world would be in universal acceptance of this revision. :)

27. I have never seen any serious evidence that MLK Jr. ever registered as a Republican, or endorsed, or even voted for, a Republican candidate for office.

I welcome documentary evidence that shows any of the above. MLK Sr. was a Republican, but there's no evidence that Jr. was: as best I can tell it's mere conjecture based on circumstantial evidence.

All that said, it doesn't matter: the GOP of the 1950s into the 1970s was fairly liberal, and thankfully, the party has changed a lot since then. On race matters the GOP has always been, and is to this day, far more right than wrong (and than the Democrats), but on many other matters of the time, I am glad we've moved to the right.

28. Pudge,

I have never seen any serious evidence that MLK Jr. ever registered as a Republican, or endorsed, or even voted for, a Republican candidate for office.

You can probably contact the NBRA and ask...

On race matters the GOP has always been, and is to this day, far more right than wrong (and than the Democrats)

Yep, it was one of the reasons the GOP was founded - ending slavery! The Slavery Party refuses to acknowledge their own background, and lies about the background of the GOP. But what's new...

29. Going to avoid Nordstrom's this Christmas. I don't want to be slapped with a scarlet "R" for choosing the wrong Santa.

30. One sure way to spot racism is to look at how those in question educate kids.

If you see someone impart to children that people come in all shapes, sizes and colors and what's important is what they have to say, then that's the Conservative way.

If you see someone impart to children that some people are in one group with a color, and other people are in another group with a different color, and then hey, let's sing a song about Obama, then that's the Liberal way.

Six to Eight Black Men

Posted by: Smoley on November 18, 2009 08:21 AM
33. Actually I've always been a little upset over the 'red-nosed reindeer' also. These days one is alerted more by a blue flashing light than a red one. This should also be an area of focus in the realm of what's fair and equitable...not to mention the safety aspect. :)

35. In response to the incident in which Santa's reindeer ran over an elderly woman, I issue the following statement:

"Our diversity, not only at the North Pole, but in our country, is a strength. And as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse."

37. @9: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a registered Republican. And he would most likely still be, since Republicans represent the color-blind ideal.

There were plenty of African-American Republicans... back then. Edward Brooke, the first African-American senator of the modern age, is another example. However, there's a big difference between now and then. With the party back in the 1950s and 1960s, Eisenhower was working hard to integrate the Armed Forces. After the Republicans coopted all those folks in the south disillusioned when segregation and civil rights passed, though, it's been nothing but a sea of white faces.

Not to mention that MLK was traveling to Memphis to support striking workers when he died. Hardly a Republican thing to do!

There's a reason I call the Democrats the Slavery Party. Because it is the truth, regardless of your protestations to the contrary.

Yeah, sorry, you're still a dick. Why don't you just call the Democrats the "Bimetallism Party"? It's just as accurate.

"nothing but a sea of white faces."

You mean like LA Gov. Bobby Jindal? Or maybe RNC Chairman Michael Steele? How about Mel Martinez? Jaycee Watts? Condi Rice? Alberto Gonzales? Yea, the GOP really hates minorities.

"Yea, sorry, you're still a dick."

You sure have a way with words. That's a great argument. You've won me over.

39. Slavery Party Failed Abortion,

Better a dick than a pussy...;)

What party supported CA Proposition 209? What party opposed it? You know, that "create a color-blind society" proposition spearheaded by Ward Connerly... Which party wanted to keep race institutionalized, which party wanted to make Government truly colorblind?

Your party is the party of hate and race, and it refuses to acknowledge it's background. Sorry, but that's the fact. And your name-calling simply won't change them...

45. Your party is the party of hate and race, and it refuses to acknowledge it's background. ~ Dan

No kidding. The Republican party could never get away with having a ranking Senator in a position of leadership that was once the Grand Kleagle of the KKK, wrote that he'd "rather see old glory dragged through the mud, than serve with the likes of race mongrels", voted against both black appointees to the SCOTUS (marshal/Thomas) and filibustered the Civil rights act of 1964 at the ripe young age of 48.

But the dems have a different playbook and set of rules to live by aided by their lap dogs in the liberal ideologues in the lamestream media that protect the reality of their party's past.

Others have investigated and questioned and found nothing, and the NBRA, to my knowledge, has not produced. If they had evidence, I think they'd provide it. I won't spend my time hunting it down.

I remain unconvinced, due to lack of evidence, that MLK Jr. was a Republican.

47. Racism was prevalent on the left early in the 20th century. Woodrow Wilson, godfather of progressivism was very much racist; he basically re-segregated the federal gov't after taking power.

I believe that now racism is in the process of migrating back to the left side of the political spectrum. We see the evidence with increasing frequency. Lefties in California trying to keep Asians out of colleges; race-baiters like Democrat prosecutor Nifong in NC; education policies designed to produce near 80% dropout rates in cities like Detroit w/ large black populations.

It is racism in a strange new form, but racism nonetheless.

52. Since the city is still majority white, its naturally that the kids sitting on Santas lap will be white so there will be less need for the non white ones. What do the non white ones do until they are needed? Sit in the back, sip cocoa and eat cookies?

I have dark hair, brown eyes and a dark beard but am a garden variety white guy.

I can pretend to be a middle eastern Santa and get paid for it.

I need a job.
