Hutchison-Constantine Debate

The first televised debate in the KCE race took place last night. Susan was all smiles while Dow carried a scowl on his face for most of the evening but overall it seemed business as usual with probably a slight tip in favor of the Hutchison campaign. The theme of Constantine's responses centered around his experience while Hutchison presented herself as a non-partisan change agent and outsider with new ideas. Constantine, as he's done repeatedly in many forums, desperately continued to paint Hutchison as a far-right, "anti-choice" Bush supporter, even using one of his two "challenge cards" to get an extra shot in at the very beginning of the debate, something that may work on Capitol Hill and in Fremont but will just look like poor sportsmanship in the rest of the county.

One interesting note on media bias: Amy Radil of KUOW asked about the candidate's campaign donations and gave bi-partisan examples of Luke Esser and Dave Ross for Constantine while focusing on partisan examples of Bush and Huckabee for Hutchison.

YES, Susan Hutchison is a right-wing, Bush-supporting, anti-choice, anti-environmental, Huckabee-loving conservative REPUBLICAN.

3. Typical lib tactic. After reciting his two accomplishments during his decades long tenure in King County government, Dow turns to Democrat Playbook strategy #432. "After you're done mentioning your meager accomplishments, spend the rest of the debate ruthlessly attacking your opponent."

4. Jeremy, I also hear she puts puppy blood on her cornflakes and has a shrine to Cuthulu in her family room.

5. Hey Mark,

Jeremy is in the information systems unit over at KC, maybe give his boss a quick call to see if he is misusing county property. Who knows? maybe he in on a furlough day, or maybe he is violating the electioneering laws at work.

6. Amy Radil may be so far to the left that she really thinks Dave Ross is conservative

7. I do not get why there is so much attention torwards this race. Neither is planning on cutting any function of the county government. So what is there to debate about? Who is a better at running an efficient government?

8. Lysander, in all seriousness, I really want to know: If Joe Stalin came back from the dead and was to run against, say, Ronald Reagan (who wasn't really able to cut the size of government either) would you really sit it out?

I agree with you that our government is continuing to grow out of control and that, if I had my druthers I'd like to see a roll back to the level of government we had back in 1789, but do you really not see the difference between someone who will do her best to stop the bleeding and someone who will make it worse?

And for godssake, we live in King County, even if Susan were to go out and talk about slashing services that both you and I don't think are a function of government (libraries, transportation, etc.) it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference. She probably would have received fewer votes than Goodspaceguy.

9. Mark:
She would make a difference because then a few more people would have heard good sound reasons for why cutting government is the right thing to do. As it stands now they do not hear it because they have the choice between two people who both think the county government is not too big.

As for the Stalin vs Reagan, Presidential elections give us more than two choices. I would have supported someone better than both of those guys.

10. TIMES endorses Hutchison!

Aren't these wonderful decent people you'd like to have as neighbors? Or are they simply infant killing loons that never have grown up?

12. Well Lysander, if you honestly believe that there are more than two choices in a presidential election in this country then, as I like to say, "Good luck with that. Everybody's gotta have a dream."

13. Especially since he is a County Employee, I sure hope nobaody calls Director Fleming to see if Jeremy is blogging on company time.

14. Lysander, I am willing to give her a shot. I believe that she will be cautious and even-handed in reshaping the landscape and anything is better than what we've had or the other choices...

15. Mark:
If you think there are only two choices then I feel for you. Not only are there many choices leading up to the primaries, there are more than two parties in the country as well. Granted most times only two candidates have a chance of winning but why vote for one of those if they want to take you in the opposite direction you want to go?

Alphapbet Soup:
Give her a shot, you will get nowhere. She has told as much already. Why not, throw your time and energy at a candidate or issue where at least the public is being told about the ideas of limited government?

16. So Lysander, does this mean you're launching a write in campaign for Executive?

Posted by: MarkGriswold on October 16, 2009 03:29 PM
17. And we all know that County executives make the laws concerning abortions. This just proves what a moron Dow is. Besides, what kind of parents would name their child Dow?

Posted by: Mark on October 16, 2009 03:33 PM
18. Mark:
No, it means I am not supporting either of the candidates and urge others not to either.

Posted by: Lysander on October 16, 2009 03:43 PM
19. Ok Lysander, if you don't want us to support either candidate then who's name should we be writing in?

Posted by: MarkGriswold on October 16, 2009 03:49 PM
20. When posed with bad choices, do not chose. In other words... do not vote. Why give make them feel like their power is legitimate?

Posted by: Lysander on October 16, 2009 04:27 PM
21. Constantine is a truly creepy candidate!

22. I am a supporter of both Susan Hutchison and Sound Politics but I have to say I disagree with your point about media bias. Susan Hutchison hasn't given any money to Democrats, not a single penny that I am aware of. So how could the questioner cite her bipartisan contributions?

Media bias is a problem; don't minimize it by making examples up.

Posted by: Chris Briggs on October 16, 2009 05:36 PM
23. The questioner also thought Dave Ross was a Republican, it doesn't get much more out of touch than that.
