Joe Mallahan for Mayor?
Could T Mobile vice president Joe Mallahan actually get elected mayor of Seattle? Well, it is the year of hope and change so anything is possible. He is the only challenger of two term Mayor Greg Nickels to raise serious campaign cash even if the lion's share came from his own funds. He talks a good game touting his management experience and playing the "I'm not a politician" card. According to the Seattle Times, he made an exceedingly brash statement that he may live to regret when he said, "My belief is that delivering city services and managing city infrastructure isn't that complicated." Mix in ten elected officials (mayor plus 9 council members), too numerous to name special interest groups and fickle voters all operating in the "Seattle Way" and everything from stopping bums urinating on the streets to replacing an earthquake prone eyesore highway becomes a tangled web of controversy. What Joe will learn quickly if elected, but really needs to know as a candidate, is political experience - the art of doublespeak - is a key skill for anyone in a political job. Mayor Nickels knows this and is a master at it.
The city government desperately needs a major house cleaning. Having an outsider businessperson as mayor would be a fine start. But I'm not holding my breath.

1. You have a valid point regarding the art of doublespeak as the essential skills in today's politics. However, I will support wholeheartedly anyone who speaks straight with means what he says without some underlying double meaning. I believe the sole reason why today's government is exceedingly bloated with programs after programs that do nothing but waste scarce resources is because we sorely lack people who speak straight and carry out what they say they will do.
2. I see no reason for Mallahan being able to run Seattle with superior results over what Mayor Nickels was able to do. Mallahan, being vice president of T Mobile, which has 36,000 employees, is well position in proved experience that will allow him to handle successfully, the position of Mayor of Seattle. Your belief that Mallahan needs to have the political experience of having the art of doublespeak in order to run Seattle is a bunch of Crap. Double speak was one of Mayor Nickels downfalls. He was getting no respect from anybody because, of it. Bottom Line: You can have all kinds of so-called political experience and still be a self important dishonest bumbling Fool.
3. My posting @2...The first sentence should read: I see no reason for Mallahan not, being able to run Seattle with superior results over what Mayor Nickels was able to do.
4. One things for sure, Mayor Nickel's proved he wasn't worth his salt this past winter.
5. The problem is Mallahan has stated he is for the grocery bag tax and thinks it doesn't go far enough. We already have one of "those" Mayors, what we need is someone who looks at downtown and other high crime problem areas and actally sees an issue and is willing to take action as a priority.
6. A business leader should offer different perspectives, skills and determination... But Paul Schell was - a developer, if I recall correctly. And he fit right in.
I couldn't believe as the WTO protests started he told them lawlessness was OK; he let them occupy a building they trepassed in.
7. Argo Strategies, part of the Progressive Network, is handling Mallahan's campaign. With Argo in the picture it is likely Mallahan has far more in common with the Obama left than the business community.
8. A brash statement?
Jeez Warren, what have you been smoking.
Providing fire & police, parks, and a support net is done without incident in other "world class cities" and in place vanilla american cities
Why can't Seattle get it done, versus the "analysis paralysis"?
In his defense Nickels' goal was to stop the talking, make decisions, and move forward.
Nickels just consistently made the wrong decisions and needs to be fired this Aug-20009.
Seattle and King County need leaders who "invite everyone to the table", allow all points to speak, then make a decision and move forward
Seattle has some interesting candidates with Mallahan, Sigler, and Donaldson.
Nickels and Drago represenet "the faied polices of the Bush administration" and need to be fired by Seattle voters this August.
Meanwhile in King County, a major error was made the past 3 months.
The special "citizens panel" could have thought outside the box and could have selected candidates with major project experience to solve the mess that Ron Sims created since becoming KCE in Jan-1997 (after Gary Locke was elected governor)
Instead they selected a bunch of politicians allowing them to increase their pensions
Of the Final Four Ken Hammond was problably the best choice, because as a church pastor the last 10+ years, he's learned that church uproars are not over theological issues, but over color of the building, time of services, and when to have the church social.
Gee, just like Seattle, the home of the most educated people, in the whole wide world who cannot provide basic services
Constantine & Phillips basically made the decision to support Tripplet because they felt they would get more votes than they would lose
Double Shame on PBR and Regan Dunn
Ditto Julia Patterson
Shame on Ferguson, Hague, and Lambert for Not having better sales skills
Kurt Triplet was at the center of all of Ron Sims failed policies
A one eyed cat and a three legged dog could do a better job of running Seattle and King County than the present Klowns

9. Hey Smokie @5...Please, provide a link to where Mallahan has stated he is for the grocery bag tax and thinks it doesn't go far enough. If what you say is True....Then, Mallahan is a Loser!
10. Anyone who is worried that Mallahan doesn't have enough political experience has never worked for corporate America.

13. Thanks, Smokie for the address on Mallahan. For some reason, I couldn't get it to work by just, pasting it on the search bar. I had to go through Google to finally get the page. However, before Googling I was able to find out additional information on Mallahan. He is for raising the minimum wage to $15 dollars. That should raise costs on everything and reduce job opportunities for entry workers plus, causing fewer jobs to be available. Along with his acceptance of a bag tax and even banning the plastic grocery bag plus, thinking a minimum wage of $15 is great, puts him down as a Liberal Loon that will not make Government more accountable to the tax payer, businesses and the local economy.
