A Lesson For Fremont?

Let me start by saying that this was, without question, a crime.  But I have to add that I can't help admiring the protestor's spirit, though I wish he had chosen legal means to make his point.

(The BBC reporter seems puzzled by the protest.  Perhaps they should read this book — or at least the English translation.)

1. I don't know Jim, that's a tough one. Lenin & Stalin killed so many people.
I can only wonder how the hate runs for these two.
I noticed it say's nothing about what he did to so many.

2. I had the great privilege of doing my graduate research in Russia during the early 1990's.

I saw nothing there that could be viewed by anyone other than an idiot that was a selling point for a system that brought so much misery to so many people for so long a period.

While there were exceptions, the Russian people were glad to be free of communist oppression.

Can't say they were overly optimistic, but the Russians were famous for being morose long before the 1917 revolution.

But they do have a great sense of humor - to wit, the explosive Lenin pants. LOL

4. "...leaving the Bolshevik revolutionary with a gaping hole in his rear."

LOL I dunno, somehow it seems appropriate....

and Medic/Vet is right; it should have read "Leaving the MURDEROUS Bolshevik revolutionary with a gaping hole et al..."

5. Finally, a visual accompaniment to go with the phrase:

"Blow it our your [r]ear, Vladimir!"

6. Can't say I condone the action which could have hurt someone and certainly caused a lot of damage, but I have to admit, I did enjoy seeing Lenin with a hole in his arse! :)

7. The protester's statement was made very clear...Get rid of Lenin's statue. The city's name has been changed from Leningrad to St Petersburg and there is no place for Lenin's presents any longer. This action should should finally bring about the removal of the statue. I'm sure many Russians are shouting...HOORAY!

8. I agree it was a crime. Glad no one got hurt. But it is great to see such an obvious glorification of tyranny defaced. I always thought that someone should take a wrecking ball to the Lenin statue in Fremont.

9. Damn, I thought it was the Fremont statue until I looked at the picture closely. Too bad. I've got too much to lose now to do this sort of thing, but in the times that I didn't, I knew nothing of the statue in Fremont. It could use a blast in the ass too.

10. If I have this right, the tool that brought the Lenin statue to Fremont, Lewis E. Carpenter, mortgaged his house to buy it and have it shipped here for the total cost of 41K. Then, in the midst of controversey sparked by its arrival to Seattle, Mr. Carpenter died in an auto accident...presumably leaving the Mrs. and any offspring in debt up to their eyeballs because he had to have this "work of art" of a genocidal dictator. Tell the St.Petersburg folks that the carpenter estate is willing to part with the statue of ol' Vlad for a mere 250K if they're interested....no blow hole included....unless, of course, we send VP Biden as the personal attache in charge of the delivery. Then all bets are off.

12. Considering that the Fremont Lenin statue is privately owned, It'd be interesting to hear some opinions from property rights advocates.

13. Most commenters on the blog, Joe, are conservative, hence property rights advocates. They's probably say "what does the zoning law say for that comercial strip there (just off Market St.?)?

What would the Fremonter's say if a same-size statue of Ronald Reagan was built with Ronnie holding a revolver pointed at Lenin's chest? Again, check the zoning laws - maybe that is more feasible these days than the blowing up of the Lenin one, considering everything is considered terrorisms these days, even kid pranks.

Or, I could just continue to avoid Fremont, as I do today, seeing as the shops are overpriced. I do like Big 5 Sports, but I think that is out of Fremont and into Ballard.

14. The statue of Lenin in Freemont is entirely fitting as a monument to Seattle. It is probably probably as much as the majority of Seattlites thought they could get away with in paying homage to those who have championed the world view they are invested in.

Given the option I'm sure they would have prefered to have the 500 foot tall faces of Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Sadam Husein, Chairman Mao, Barak Obama, Ted Kennedy and Leonard Peltier carved into Mt Rainier.

15. How do they know the damage was caused by a bomb? The late King Commie was possibly only suffering from gaseous "after" effects brought on by a late-night pizza and beer binge.

16. "How do they know the damage was caused by a bomb?"

yeah, or that super hadron collider thingy that people were afraid would create a black hole and swallow the earth in the process.
Personally, it looks like one too many Bean Burrito's for Vlady and his system couldn't take the pressure.

17. @ 17~ If you want a face of a terrorist, look in the mirror. You know, liberals like yourself that hold a candle light vigil for a mass murderer on his execution eve and then proceed to abort/kill an innocent, viable human life the next day at the clinic are the real terrorists in America.

Recognizing your hypocrisy is the first step towards recovery.

18. Wonder if the kids that made millions of dollars of damage to downtown during 2000 Trade summit would be considered terrorists by "not a terrorist"? I say no, just vandals; same as the guy who blew out lenin's guts.

It's just that the the lenin statue guys are probably about 50 IQ points above the downtown Seattle guys, and have a feel for history and know evil from good. Pretty hard to explain that to # 17.
