Gut Feeling: King Co. Exec's Race

In a contest between King County Councilmen Dow Constantine and Larry Phillips, I give the former the edge. The latter come across as the old-school, establishment candidate...even before one gets to the fact he doesn't seem to have an actual agenda besides "Larry Phillips for King County Executive."

In contrast, Constantine is already rounding up support from the younger, more progressive crowd that is an increasingly dominant force in local Democratic circles. Concurrently, Constantine is striking a populist tone of fiscal conservatism that can play well at the right moment, even in this very blue area:

"We can't ask taxpayers for more until we prove dollars are being used to deliver the best services," he said. Last year, the council cut $93 million in the 2009 budget.

"We can't be afraid to end programs that aren't working any more just because they're not working any more," he said. For instance, Constantine said, the county should get out of the business of running animal shelters. Shelter conditions have drawn intense criticism.

Perhaps I'll be proven wrong, and certainly the field is far from set in stone, but over the course of time I'd put my money on Constantine...not to say his politics are thrilling, but he already looks like a more formidable long-term candidate than Phillips.

1. Wonder if Larry Gossett will throw his hat in the ring. Seems appropriate to me that an African American maintain continuity in MLK County.

2. Its looking pretty unlikely that Ferguson will jump in, likely waiting for the next cycle if the dems don't win/fail at governing or perhaps the AG's race. No one else on the council seems to have an interest in the job except maybe as a caretaker.

There are a couple republicans that could make the race interesting. Rossi for one, but he seems to be looking at possibly the senate or just getting out of politics for a while.

So I would tend to agree. The race looks to be Constantine's...

3. Does it really matter?

That's an honest question, do we have any reason to believe that one will be significantly different from the other? I don't know of any but that might just be because I don't know enough.

4. What's important is who Sims and Huff want to follow in the King's footprints?

While that may sound silly, how silly is it, really?

6. A Reload or Refresh will normally push them back to where they belong. I'm seeing them in Firefox 3 every once in a while like you describe.

7. Dow Constantine is the disaster behind the Land Grabbing CAO. No Thanks!

I would donate my last dime to see that idiot pay for the land he steals!

8. Witnessing a chance conversation yesterday between Greg Nickels and another mayor outside of Frank Chopp's office, one advanced the theory to the other that Charlie Royer would be appointed to do the necessary dirty work between now and the next election. Go figure...

9. The difference between Constantine and Phillips is like the difference between Lenin and Stalin, not much.
