Which Companies Would Be Affected by Cap & Trade?

In response to a request from state Senator Jim Honeyford (R-Sunnyside), State Department of Ecology Director has released a list of companies potentially affected by the Governor's proposed cap & trade legislation (SB 5735). The list can be found on page four of this document [pdf].

It contains some companies you may by chance have heard of, Boeing, Goodrich Aerospace, PACCAR, Weyerhaeuser, etc.

In responding to Honeyford's request in writing, Manning said:

It is impossible to know with any certainty which jobs, if any will be lost due to 'leakage.' We have always recognized the potential for some energy-intensive industrial sources to be impacted.

[snip]

It is not our intent to further burden an already struggling economy.

That being the case, it would seem to be rather important to understand and quantify the actual potential economic impact of this legislation. On a related topic, at what point do blue-collar unions - whose workers are employed at many a company on the above linked list - say, "time out, we need to take a closer look at this?"

Footnote: this marks yet another potential complication for the Boeing-related issues discussed in the post immediately below on the main page.

1. Call Olympia and tell the Democrats to put down the Kool-Aid and step away from the pitcher.

2. John Murtha was in town yesterday. He wanted Boeing to split the tanker deal. Unsaid - if Boeing gives him the going ransom to his campaign funds, he will back off and release the project to Boeing.

Boeing better dig deep into it's bank account. It will be paying lots of bribes and payola to keep this gang happy. Is Norm Dicks the boy scout we all think? Or is he in it just as deep as Murtha, just lower on the radar? Too bad the Seattle Times won't investigate.

Boeing has lots of good paying American jobs at stake in the tanker deal. But it doesn't matter, because the Dems want Boeing to "show me the money".

The Stimulus is a sham. The coming mortgage deal is another big take away. The only way these companies can survive is to bend over and write a big check.

3. Still spreading the ol' manure, huh Janet? Keeps those prize lilies in that manicured eastside yard looking good.

Well, keep trying. Perhaps the Whigs will come back one day. Of course, they're unlikely to bring back your beloved monarchy. Hmm, guess you better hope the Repubs make a return visit but I wouldn't bet the bank account on it.

4. We will all be affected by this scham, another political lack of understanding in an engineering world.
Higher costs for companies, higher rates for consumers and no contribution to the environment, priceless and inept decision-making on the part of our politicians.
This could be a better scam than the 2000 California re-regulation debaucle.

5. Don't limit yourselves to reading just page 4 of this excellent ''SRC Energy Update'' by Sen. Honeyford: The entire 7 pages is well worth the time; and serves as textbook example and serious warning about the eco-looney-socialist direction the (D) majority in Oly is pointed. We can only hope Sen. Honeyford and other rational members of the WA Leg can prevent the worst excesses from becoming law.

SIDEBAR: With crazy stuff like this, the odds that Boeing will build their next model of commercial airliner in WA keep getting smaller every day. And how about Microsoft: While it wouldn't be a trivial move, you can take software anywhere: Most of what they do could be done in Boise or NC or NV and a bunch of etcetera.... or, for that matter: In China.

6. In reality, in such a trade-dependent state, EVERY business will be affected by this insanity. Even restaurants import a good amount of their stock throughout the year. And all those trucks and planes and ships and trains bringing product into and away from this state will get hurt.

The Slavery Party seems intent on blowing big holes in the tops of their feet.

7. Hey Curious George,

Murtha has a history of asking for opened checkbooks and "what are you going to do for me?" handout requests, going back at least to ABSCAM...

9. Good idea Porkgressives. Run with it. A massive fraudulent scam that will eliminate jobs. That ought to really help with Progressive popularity. All anyone needs to do is tune in to ICECAP for daily updates on why Global Warming isn't.

The latest scam was the UW Professor Steig who manipulated data from a tiny set of Antarctic weather data stations, and then transposed data, all in an effort to eke out a lame study that Antarctica is warming, even though it is not. And, the weather stations in question were based on the Western end of Antarctica which is particularly volcanic, and many of the stations in question, buried in snow, a nice insulator that would tend to warm up the data. Of course, just like the hockey stick, that Algore used as a prop, this study has already been thoroughly discredited. Global Warming ain't happening, but the Socialists really need another crisis to go big with Cap and Trade.

If you want a job, don't look to Progressives. They will destroy your job through regulatory overreach, a contracted bankrupt economy, or both.

10. Cap and trade has already been implemented by an alliance of NE states. Cries of foul and screwed are beginning to reverberate. But, the MSM is silent. You need to dig the information our of the Net.

Look at the list of companies on page 4 of linked pdf file. Contemplate the products and services that these companies make or provide. Then estimate what the cost of cap and trade and emission credits will be for each. The realize that every dollar possible will be passed on to consumers.

Cap and trade of emission quota allowances and trade in emission credits are an indirect tax on greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2). The state is going to run the trading system. There will be traders (middle men) involved.

I have no idea of who gets the money or how it will be spent because the system includes 7 states and 4 Canadian provinces.

What is certain is that the total reduction in CO2, if any, will have no influence whatsoever on climate or weather locally or globally. The EU has employed the same emission reduction system in place for a decade. CO2 emissions have increased anyway while the cost of electricity and transportation from fossil fuels has skyrocketed.

Implementation of the Western Climate Initiative will cause unnecessary and avoidable inflation, increase the cost of almost everything, and add about 3000 employees to the state DOE.

The monumental stupidity involved in pursuing WCI at a time our state and local governments have overspent themselves into fiscal crises is beyond comprehension. The Democrats in control are desperate and clueless lemmings headed for the cliff.

We need to start asserting ourselves or the lemmings will take us down with them.

11. Update: See:
"Western Climate Plan Could Prolong Recession, Weaken Power Grids but Not Change Temperature" at

This 157 page document in pdf form is titled: "Ideas For Reducing GHG Emissions While 'Keeping The Lights On' and The Economy Growing in the West" and was authored by Management Services Inc for the Western Business Roundtable.

Everything you need to know and much more.

12. I may be a bit slow. It strikes me as odd that most of the companies on the list employee mostly blue collar workers. Again, generalizing most of the workers for the companies are unionized. Those unions use their clout to get their workers and others to vote for Democrats. The greens pushing this program are also Democrats. This could be an interesting confrontation within the ranks of that party. Expressly if there are significant job losses.
