Why the Right is Calling it "Porkulus"

Behold, the might power of the proposed stimulus deal:

Q: What are some of the tax breaks in the bill?

A: It includes Obama's signature "Making Work Pay" tax credit for 95 percent of workers, though negotiators agreed to trim the credit to $400 a year instead of $500 -- or $800 for married couples, cut from Obama's original proposal of $1,000. It would begin showing up in most workers' paychecks in June as an extra $13 a week in take-home pay, falling to about $8 a week next January.

There is also a $70 billion, one-year fix for the alternative minimum tax. The fix would save some 20 million mainly upper-middle-income taxpayers about $2,000 in taxes for 2009.

$13 a week?

Worthless.

1. From the provided link from Eric:
Q: Does the bill include federal aid to the states?
A: Yes. It includes major contributions to states to help with their budget shortfalls and assure the viability of Medicaid and education programs.

translation: help subsidize/bail out mismanaged states (like Washington state-7B in the crapper) and extend to the some of the most unproductive members of society, a new contract to be voluntary "slaves of the state".

How could our future generations not feel "stimulated" by this bill?...oh yeah, they have to pay it off.

2. I wish the right was less concerned with the fact that there is pork in the bill and more concerned with the fact that ANY government spending is bad.

They lost this battle by accepting the premise that government is the answer. It is so frustrating!

3. What happened to the Washington Voters Database link??

4. I am with Lysander on that point! Who in their right mind could possibly believe it makes sense (or will stimulate anything) to 'borrow' from citizens and then turn around and give less back after washing it through convoluted waste and busy work?

Difficult to spend two trillion dollars to improve the economy and be greeted not even with a yawn but rather with panicked flight from the market.

Investors are heading for the exits for obvious reasons. Like Kirchner and the Peronists in Argentina and Mugabe in Zimbabwe, O has chosen to raid the National Treasury and debase its credit to reward his followers. We have seen it before elsewhere. And while words do matter, there comes a time when words are not enough no matter how clever or duplicitous. In the real world, where the rubber meets the road, O has marked himself as a terribly tragic joke upon the United States, whose actions in a few weeks have produced incalculable damage to our nation's financial health. He has turned "a crisis into a catastrophe."

5. Hmmm, let's take money from those that are working and give it back to them and to others that didn't pay income tax and we'll call it stimulus.

No new net growth....just more people spending the same amount. Where in this bill is there a stimulus for creating new jobs? None!! Sure some short term construction, but really is that new jobs? Nope.

Better if they just gave everyone $5000 and booked out Vegas for each person to rotate through.

6. #2 True story. The motive of the Dems is to take as many people off of the tax rolls as they can and bring back welfare. The left just can't help themselves and it will probably come back and bite them in the a$$.

I am surprised few have mentioned that the Porkulus Stimulus bill laid the groundwork for Universal Health Care, Medicaid & socialized medicine. That is the part that bothers me the most because it will be a continual drain on our budget and will only get worse until it becomes unsustainable. Hopefully, a future president will take that away through an executive order.

7. The problem is that if you want to save 95% of taxpayers some real money, you'd have to GIVE money to probably more than a third of them, since they barely pay any taxes anyway.

8.
Most importantly, Obama's fate is now tied to an economic package that was shaped more by political considerations (a 40-year Democratic wish list) than economic needs. This legislation is, in the eyes of many, a monstrosity. And very soon now Barack Obama will have ownership of it, and all the fiscal and economic consequences that flow from it.

Bingo!

A pretty scathing (and well deserved) commentary even by conservative standards.

9. Wow, 13 bucks, huh? That ought to just about cover three mochas. Well, at least we would be spending at Starbucks, contributing to the economy and all that!

10. Washington state is set to receive 2 Billion for Medicaid "to ease the burden of rising Medicaid costs". Here's a thought, if you can't even take care of yourself, quit bringing children into the world to live in your misery and add to your situation. This 2 Billion will be gone in no time with the ever increasing illegal alien population here in the state sucking off the teat as well...then what?
Get Uncle Obama on the speed dial Christine, afterall, your shell game to socialism is working flawlessly with an ignorant public.

11. Hey, it works. Now I have to hire someone to interpret and resetup my bookkeeping accounts. I use the Quickbooks service but I hope they can get this right.

It would be a miracle because I can guarantee you 200% that the wording in the bill won't make sense to an accountant. This bill was passed too quickly.

At about this point, can't we rename all those lawyer jokes and change them to politicians?

12. Just like in times past, Socialist use a "CREATED" crisis to seize power. However the silver lining is that this is only going to stimulate Government. When The #&@* hits the fan and this bill does nothing. The dem/socialists will not be able to escape blame even though they will still blame Bush for it. 2010 bye bye you dem/socialists. Oh ... all of you "Moderates" get a life. This is your fault too. Your children are going to have to pay with increased taxes this huge pork bill, you dems and moderates spent your childrens income also .... so who is greedy here. didn't you mommy say that if you want to get somewhere you have to work for it... don't depend on anyone else for what you need. NOTHING IS FREE......

13. $13 a week? $400 (tax break for individual) divided by 52 (weeks in a year) equals $7.69 per week.

Makes up for the increase in the cigarette tax.

14. The "Swindle Us" bill is nothing other than what YObama revealed to Joe the Plumber, that as president he would take from those who work for their money and give to those who don't (or won't).

Many in my family have remained in contact with the "old family" in Europe's Scandianavian region, where workers regularly take a few months (or years) off to go "on the dole". With oppressive taxation confiscating most of their earnings, why not? It will soon be the same here, although a large portion of America's population is already on the "lifetime" dole program. Will there be room for all of us? Stay tuned.....

Hey, how about we just get the TAX CHEATS like Daschle, Geithner, and Rangel to actually PAY THEIR TAXES before we add new "mandatory contributions"!

16. Thanks President Obama, for adding yet another credit to the tax code and making it even more complex! I would think with all the tax-related challenges of your nominees that you would be striving to simplify it instead.

17. I just can't help laughing. I remember reading and hearing the hopes of all the poor suckers who thought they were going to get a bunch of money. When it sinks in that they're going to get from $7 to $13 more a paycheck, just watch how fast the aura or halo around Obama disappears!

Posted by: katomar on February 12, 2009 08:22 AM
18. Obama's tax credit is a total joke.

According to the IRS, the average refund for 2008 was $2429. Just by adjusting withholding to the correct level, the average tax payer would bring home an extra $46 a week.

19. How much a week did the Middle Class get under the Bush or Regan tax cuts?

WSJ seems to think Obama's tax cuts are bigger than those of the GOP patriarchs mentioned above.

Posted by: Cato on February 12, 2009 11:45 AM
20. ObfusCATOr,

could pack more punch in two years than either of President George W. Bush's tax cuts did in their first two years

LEARN TO READ! The WSJ specifically says in the first TWO years. Over the full Bush tax cuts, they were MUCH larger than the Obama $13/week. Four to five times higher, and longer term.

And are you now singing the praise of tax cuts? Finally seeing that the Republican approach - cutting taxes - is a good thing, and that we need to cut even further?

HOPE AND CHANGE!

23. The Alternative Minimum Tax needs to be gotten rid of. They have NEVER indexed it thing for inflation. so back when it started in the 60's, it was targeting those who made $200,000 which adjusted for inflation these days is more than $1.1 million. But here they are, hitting people who make less than 1/5 of that with AMT. They abuse taxpayers with this thing. So get rid of it.

24. Thank you again Heritage Foundation for the low down on the massive theft by by the federal government from the productive just so the Brown Clown can pander to the parasitic: True Cost of Stimulus: $3.27 Trillion

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) asked the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the impact of permanently extending the 20 most popular provisions of the stimulus bill. What did the CBO find? As you can see from the table below, the true 10 year cost of the stimulus bill $2.527 trillion in in spending with another $744 billion cost in debt servicing. Total bill for the Generational Theft Act: $3.27 trillion...

25. It IS pork, it IS boondoggle spending and will NOT fix the current problem. Putting a pretty name on it doesn't change what it is. One can put frosting on dog poop and make it look like a cake, but underneath, it is still dog poop.
