White House Web Site Fail

Related to this morning's post, I'll cut Team Obama some slack given the initiation phase of dealing with hopelessly stale government technology (as my own recent days at the U.S. Department of Education will attest), but I note with interest this:

Obama's Whitehouse.gov: Frozen in time?

Long story short, the web site isn't exactly receiving updates in a timely manner...even as the rest of Obama's communications operations is consumed with the dizzying pace of the opening days of any Administration.

Again, governing is different than campaigning. And Congress hasn't even started being a real pain in the ass to folks in the West Wing...

...yet.

UPDATE: it appears the White House Press Corps may have at least temporarily misplaced its jug of Hope-n-change Kool-Aid.

1. It's worse than that, Eric. It would be better if it WERE frozen in time.

There are MILLIONS of links to whitehouse.gov out there. On my web site, for example, I link to this video of George Bush's speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Pretty much all such links are just ... gone.

I hope they come back.

2. pudge -

This may help you a bit:

3. Eric: that's good, but misses the point. The millions of links don't self-update.

Posted by: pudge on January 22, 2009 10:19 PM
4. Oh, and in this case, it is broken anyway, since the video is not hosted by archives.org.

5. Much ado about nothing...must be slow news days. :)

Posted by: Duffman on January 23, 2009 05:14 AM
6. Could be that it is just overwhelmed. Every gun rights organization has alerted members to read the site. Seems they have posted under the urban policy that they intend to make the former assault weapons ban permanent.

So much for the campaign promise not to come after the guns.

7. Well, when they get the site up and running full tilt, hopefully they will have a link to New York's recently appointed Senator (to replace Hillary). Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is certainly easy on the eyes. :) [Way to go, Governor]

8. Hey, the guy campaigned on transparency. Or are you still in a trance?

Slow news: I never saw any reporting on the executive orders Obama issued which rescinded several of Bush's. It seems the federal government is back into the business of killing unborn babies.

Bush sealed the Clinton White House records and Obama has just unsealed the last four years of the Clinton Administration.

Elections have consequences. And other than honest elections, true reporting by the Fourth (or is the Fifth) Estate is next on the list to keep government accountable. Ergo, the Obama flubs with communication (i.e. trying to hide things) is big news.

9. Has anyone other than me heard the statement from Robert Reich.

The hate has started. (white guys need not apply for jobs)

And this is one of Obama's advisors.

Jezzz

10. "Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is certainly easy on the eyes. :) [Way to go, Governor]"

Of course you do Duffman. Your only criteria for public office appears to be whether they have:
A) a uterus and;
B) attractive physical qualities

To hell if she can govern (or in this case represent her NY consituents well), she looks good, right? No wonder this country is headed into the crapper with a voting populous so obsessed with trivial minutia in their decision-making processes.
This is the mindset that got us a pop star instead of a president this November.

11. #10 Now, now Rick don't go on rampage with false accusations and assumptions like you know it all; I was simply pointing out an attractive Congresswoman-soon-to-be-Senator, that's all. Never said anything about her ability to function as a politician...just because she's a Dem doesn't mean she can't govern.
We just simply have to hope that she doesn't have to interact much with former President Clinton. :)

#9 (white guys need not apply for jobs)

Shame...shame AM/V, yes I heard it and that's not QUITE what he said. The gist was that he wanted it to be 'all-inclusive'. Put down the beer...it's too early! :)

12. swatter and Vince:

Obama is the most radical pro-abortion and anti-gun President of all-time. This is sad but not at all unexpected.

This is the man who proposed to ban gun stores from all cities and almost all suburban areas in Illinois, and defended a total handgun ban in Washington DC.

This is the man who said that a newborn child, living and breathing on its own, born as the result of a botched abortion, should be allowed to die if that is the wish of the doctor and mother, because that is respecting their decision to abort the child.

I would be shocked if he did NOT act on these beliefs as President.

13. No Duffie... HE did say that!

Parce words anyway you want, but he said it!
How many "construction workers" do you know that are ALL white.

It was a racist statement from a fool who works for Obama. If any Bush people had even used words close to it. The libs & the MSN would be screaming for weeks!

14. Duffman,
Since you are on top of all things Obama, perhaps you can explain the appointment of William J. Lynn III to the number 2 position at DOD. Compare and contrast with the NO LOBBYIST stance of the President please.

15. Eric,
Some things could be in "cut slack" category. Other things are not. OReilly (technical book publisher) news site had an article today on the new website. One point noted in the article is a violation of federal 508 compatibility standards, which has been in effect several years. The article points out an image graphic on one of the pages that doesn't have alt text associated with the graphic. This is a clear and easy fix and should have been caught by the web administrators. Any 508 Compatibility checker would have flagged this.

My guess on the not getting the Orders up immediately is an issue relating to the current state of the Whitehouse's technology and additional hurdles the staff now need to go through.

One final point, let's hope the staff are using proper security on both the live site and the posting process to the live site. I still remember in the Clinton years when the site got hacked because they were cleartext FTP posting to an staging server.

16. #14 The EO also allows POTUS Obama to waive that provision...not that I would know, since I'm only authoritative on 'good-lookin' blonde Congresswomen-to-be-Senators. :)

17. Duffie
The EO also allows POTUS Obama to waive that provision...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

LOL.. do as I say, not as a do.

Everyday this fool is showing us he has no idea what in the heck, he's doing. The next 4 years are going to be a blast watching the dem's turn themselves inside out. ( Now this is HOPE & CHANGE)

18. Duffie, I think they just wanted an excuse to use White House & Fail in a single headline. We now return to the non-issue of the day.

Posted by: Cato on January 23, 2009 10:51 AM
19. Yeah Cato... Words means something. well that is unless it's a dem.

Ahhhh the Clinton years have returned. (what the meaning of IS again)

Posted by: Medic/Vet on January 23, 2009 10:56 AM
20. swatter is not going to enjoy the next four years as much as you, Medic. I still need to make up for the last years stock market drop, so I am vested in getting this thing right.

Posted by: swatter on January 23, 2009 12:34 PM
21. @8"I never saw any reporting on the executive orders Obama issued which rescinded several of Bush's"

Err....ummm...how did you find out, then? Did Barry call you at 3:00 am?

Posted by: Dave on January 23, 2009 02:45 PM
22. Exactly, my frienddd. It wasn't reported. Slowly and surely the orders are being leaked out there. I had heard Obama had signed five executive orders but the source didn't know which ones and wondered why no one knew.

Transparency? Yeah, about as transparent as a block of wood.

Posted by: swatter on January 23, 2009 02:53 PM
23. Does anyone know if that whitehouse.gov site is for real? It is so far from what I recall as the bland government site I remember. I am not saying this to label the prior administration as dull. The whitehouse.gov site now lacks sense and decorum. It is not business-like!

If you look at the Agenda page, you will find a section on Katrina that is blatantly disrespectful of George Bush. A section on defense makes the ludicrously inflated claim that Obama and Biden will together round up all of the world's loose nuclear materials within the next four years, in order to keep them out of the hands of terrorists. How could anyone take that seriously? Which leads me to wonder whether this is a bogus site posing as a .gov . What do you think?

24. > Yeah Cato... Words means something

Funny, I never saw those words on here when Bush was President. Must be some sort of editorial bias. =P

Posted by: Cato on January 23, 2009 04:19 PM
25. Cato... I knew you would miss that one..
These words come from YOU guys. So back at ya buddy.

Let's see... Your AG has no problem letting go bombers who kill and people who don't pay tax. (now isn't that funny) Your IRS fool can't pay taxes either and is sorry because he's stupid. Yep tell that to the IRS! Obama says NO lobbyist and the next day hires one.... LOL

So Cato, you all keep yapping about Bush! (-;

Posted by: Medic/Vet on January 23, 2009 04:28 PM
26. > These words come from YOU guys

Do I care? No.

> Your AG has no problem letting go bombers who kill and people who don't pay tax

You are starting to sound like Ragnut, launching into wild conspiracy theories and not making any sense. Next you'll be telling me Obama is a secret Muslim because he didn't retake the oath on a bible.

You've clearly got ODS and the administrations just started. Going to be a fun 4 years, just look at the leadership race for head of the RNC...pure GOP chaos. Who's going to elect a party to power who's potential leader hands out racist material in hopes of getting elected (especially when he's running against Michael Sttele). =P
