Sen. Patty Murray December 2002:
"We've got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular around the world?...Why are people so supportive of him in many countries . . . that are riddled with poverty?January 2008:"He's been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that.
"How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?"
Suspected Taliban militants have bombed five schools in Pakistan's Swat valley today. It's part of a campaign against girls' education that's seen more than 170 schools blown up or burned down in the country's lawless northwest. The militants ordered all girls' schools in the area closed by last Thursday.
Also an answer to #3 will be useful to know. It help prepare for the attacks we are sure to receive from the current leaders we are supporting in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, and who knows where else.
Posted by: Lysander on January 19, 2009 11:13 PMOh wait, didn't the children sing that Obama was going to make it all better. Oh yeah, that's right. Now we just need to let the magic begin, and suddenly those bad guys will fall prostrate, ecstatic like the rest of those attending the inauguration tomorrow, and the world will be filled with peace and live happily ever after.
Posted by: Jeff B. on January 19, 2009 11:33 PMIf you actually look at her quote she is saying that one way to fight that is to help ensure that those things are offered by legitimate and non-violent actors. Just as after school sports say help to fight gangs by offering kids the things they are seeking while also giving them a positive influence.
If we can decrease the level of desperation in the world and increase our perception as a 'good' country we can do a fair bit to fight terrorism. Especially if we also have the ability to destroy anyone who still decides to throw in their lot with terrorists.
Posted by: Giffy on January 19, 2009 11:41 PMAll one needs to do is use google and you can find many stories of Patty Murray's "friends" and what they really do for "infrastructure". I looked at many links until I found a source that lib trolls wouldn't dispute:

Okay, now did you see how in the first quote the speaker (Patty Murray) was referring to madrassas, not schools that included girls. If you knew anything about the history of the Taliban then this would not be hard for you to recognize. If however, you're clueless but nonetheless granted internet access, well then maybe you'd try to suggest that the second statement contradicts the first.
The second statement, pay attention here, this is important, refers to girls schools in the Swat Valley. See that, in one case the Taliban is building schools (for boys), in the second they are blowing up schools (for girls). So the suggested contradiction, subtle as it may be by our gifted writer, is either intentionally misleading, or a failure of "them not so good reading skills."
You choose Sound Politics.
