WEA Pays $1 Million for Violating Teacher Rights

Until last year, the law in Washington disallowed the Washington Education Association from using mandatory non-member union dues for political activity. The WEA did it anyway, spending millions of dollars, the huge majority of the money going to Democrats.

Though it is no longer law -- the Democrats revoked that law last year, so the Democrats now force public teachers to contribute money to Democratic campaigns -- the WEA still violated the law at the time, and has now reached a settlement with the Attorney General to the tune of $975,000: $735,000 to the state, and $240,000 to teachers.

Thanks to the EFF for filing this complaint and following up with it.

2. When Tim Eyman had his misappropriation scandal, both papers made it a blockbuster story. The week the story broke, there were above-the-fold headlines in both papers 3 out of 5 days. Even though Eyman apologized like a man, the Eyman enemies never really let him move past it. They bring it up every time he files an initiative.

It will be interesting to see if this will even make the front page. I think the last such WEA scandal was on the front page of the Times, but not above the fold. And of course it is never mentioned in subsequent WEA-related coverage even though the WEA head never apologized.

The papers make me sick--I hope they both go under.

3. Three cheers for EFF: One of the best beacons of sanity and liberty in the socialist darkness that envelopes way too much of WA.

5. Don't hold your breath waiting on the Whine-stone cowboy David Horsey to draw this in the morning fishwrap...he, like the paper that prints his doodling just ignore stories that don't fit their political paradigm.

7. They treat their members like dirt; no respect---else they would have kept the mandatory non-political part separate from the political spending.

8. Huh... Why exactly does the state get most of the money?

9. Cicero, yeah, in the end, if the WEA kept the money it would just get funneled to Democrats anyway. :-)
