Snohomish as Swing County

Loyal readers know this blogger considers Snohomish County to be a bellwether in Washington state politics. On that score, examine the results from the Governor's race:

Overall margin: 53.1% - 46.9% (+6.2% for Gregoire)

Results in Snohomish County: 52.7% - 47.3% (+5.4% for Gregoire)

No county came closer to the actual statewide margin of victory, and Snohomish cast the 3rd largest number of votes in the Governor's race (roughly 317,000) in the state - just behind Pierce (approximately 325,000).

1. Do not disagree with Eric's comments in thread start, however:
Be everything else as it may:

WRT the race 4 Gov, IMO the overwhelming story is still King County versus the reset of WA:
At least as of a few days ago (which is last time I bothered to add up the numbers), WITH King County Gregoire was leading by 180K+ votes.
Leave OUT King County, and Dino was winning the overall total for the remaining 38 counties by 60K+ votes; i.e.:
Gregoire's margin in King County at that time was 240K+.

King County is the 800-pound gorilla that we (unofrtunately)have not been able to get rid of.

2. I heard where the phrase bellwether came from today. Kinda odd term!

3. Eric, what significance do you attach to our bellwether status? Is it predictable? Could the knowledge be used somehow or is it just an interesting fact?
