I remember reading about 43 signing off of his AOL account in 2001. It seemed somewhat strange then. A Blackberry-less Chief Executive in 2009 seems demonstrably more out of place. Yet, it seems unavoidable given the legal implications.

Reagan cut a lot of stuff, people seemed ok with that, but when Bush #1 tried he was sharply rebuked and voted out of office. In contrast his son just screwed everything up (W's Medicare reforms were a huge disaster).
You're right. While the Republicans had the majority, it wasn't filibuster proof. My bad.
