Pierce County: This Year's Election Joke

Thanks to their peculiar system of "ranked choice voting" and the software required to tabulate such ballots in county races, Pierce County won't be releasing results in statewide races tonight...or at least until several hours past midnight.

Ridiculous.

Makes me even more glad that we on the Snohomish County Charter Review Commission didn't give "ranked choice voting" much consideration when its advocates came pimping the idea during our 2006 term in office.

1. What a JOKE!

I was like.. "Why???"

Although, it was only for the Pierce County races. What a waste of taxpayer's money though!

2. @1 it was voted on and passed.

Blame the stupid people who voted for it, or better yet the people who were too lazy to vote because it was not a presidential election.

3. Ranked Choice Voting has provided voters with four candidates for County Executive in the general election. Two Democrats, one Republican and one Executive Excellence candidate. RCV has provided more choice in November.

In the Assessor-Treasurer race, there are six candidates. The Sheriff's race and one of the County Council races each have three candidates on the November ballot.

Many voters like the idea of more choices.

4. What's wrong with it? Other than protecting the 2 party system and entrenched incumbents, that is.

5. Leono112, Perhaps you haven't heard about a crazy idea we in the rest of the state use. We call it a primary!

6. Ranked Choice and everything like it is inane.

One citizen, one position, one vote.

It's not hard. You have as many choices as you want in the existing system everyone else use, you just don't need to VOTE FOR ALL OF THEM.

7. Just to clarify.

I actually liked it. There were a couple of races that had people running that I absolutely don't want to win. Ranked choice helps to make sure it does not happen.

8. Vince #7, Woudn't the supporters of the people whom you don't want to win, use the Ranked Choice to hurt your candidate?

Posted by: Moondoggie on November 4, 2008 05:36 PM
9. There was an opportunity to send your thoughts about the new RCV along with your ballots in the absentee envelope. I was sure to give my mind...What a waste of money! I didnt vote in half of the races, and think the whole thing is a great waste of MY TIME.

And what is the Exec. Excellence Party anyway? I didnt know you could just make up a name and call it a party and put it behind your name?? Who knew??

10. Vince:

Um. I know this sounds "crazy" and "wild," but ... have you considered just voting against them, under a normal voting system?

11. I don't agree with many people here on very many things, for which I make no apology. But I gladly stand with Pudge in my opposition to this moonbat cult gimmick.

12. Do you guys not know how it works?

Read about it here.

13. Vince:

I know well how it works; hence, my comments.

14. Ranked Choice Voting is great. No need for a stupid runoff election -- get it all done in one election, eliminating the spoiler effect without a separate, costly, and annoying trip to the ballot box. It's not a "peculiar" system at all, but rather quite a popular system around the world.

The reason you may not see any results tonight is due to a decision by Pat McCarthy. She didn't want to release preliminary results, knowing it could change as absentee votes are later counted. She could release preliminary results, if she chooses. In the worst case, you know the results in a couple days -- the world won't come to and end in the meantime.

15. Well, the fun thing about Ranked Choice Voting...is that the auditorial bonehead that dreamed it up, Pat McCarthy, is going to be running the whole show in Pierce as County Executive. So they're getting what they deserve ;^)

16. I thought it was awkward and didn't care for it. For the record whenever the only last choice was a D, I selected write-in and wrote in Darth Vader. I figured this would at least dillute the pool rather than leave it blank.

17. we were given two seperate ballots, one for the local Pierce County ranked choice voting and one for the state and presidential elections. I don't understand why the ballots for state and presidential couldn't be counted seperate from the other ballots...

...and the ranked choice voting was rather idiotic and not well explained to us.

18. The only reason to oppose it is to protect the two party system.

19. Blame the incumbent Republican Secretary of State, Sam Reed, who certified the faulty voting equipment. That this would be a problem has been known for months. Same old, same old.

20. What's the rush?

What need is being met by getting results out hours or days earlier?

Anybody who's part of a political minority benefits from ranked choice voting. It frees you to vote for the candidate you really want, without worrying that he's a "spoiler". In the usual system, when you vote for your first choice you are in effect voting against your second choice, even if it's somebody good. In ranked choice, you'd be able to put Bob Barr first without tipping the election to Obama.
