I've added a couple of new political songs to my repertoire from the movie Bob Roberts. The first is "Don't Vote," a song about how you shouldn't vote if you love terrorists, and the second is "Complain," a classic anthem about people who don't want to make their own living and then complain about everything being handed out to them.

The smiling, self-absorbed icon whose supporters fall easily into patterns of worship, and whose inner circle employ tactics of intimidation and lying to avoid having their real agenda revealed.

I don't think you get what you think you get.
Both of the songs are mocking "bleeding heart" liberals and the culture of victimhood that has permeated left-wing politics since... forever.
But in the film, they were sung by a power-mad ideologue who used them as tools to inspire class warfare and to marginalize people with opposing views. Even though I would agree with what the lyrics are saying, they carry more meaning than that because of the way they were originally used.
I am staunchly anti-communist and anti-socialist. Many old Nazi marches and songs contain strong lyrics in opposition to the Red threat and fighting the spread of communism. Would I sing them? Absolutely not.
The character of Bob Roberts was a villain. He used those songs to manipulate people's emotions and pit them against one another.
I do get what I think I get. Maybe we just don't agree on where to draw the line in how to deal with opposing views.

I do get what I think I get.
What I meant was, you don't get what you've got from me.
Maybe we just don't agree on where to draw the line in how to deal with opposing views.
Perhaps, but that has nothing to do with these videos.
In Port Townsend aka Berkeley-North, Artist/Poet/Writer are the political correct ID for Unemployed Losers so you don't hurt their fragile psyche & self-esteem. Perhaps some weekend you can visit and just start singing "Complain" endlessly on Water Street. Pt. Townsend is the City of the Perpetual Complainers. They are always bitching about something. They fail to recognize the mental damage one can do by mixing Prozac and BC Bud for 40 years.
Posted by: PTCruiser on October 30, 2008 05:56 PMI'd love to hear a song about "Progressives".
The vast majority who claim to be one are clueless about what it really means....but it sure sounds good, don't it.
I have been experiementing lately talking to self-proclaimed "Progressives" about what the term means to them..
It ranges from the honest answer..incremental progress to Socialism/Marxism to an rarified air-type response of Moving Forward...although when I ask 'em what that means, they kind of break down.
I have come to the conclusion that "Progressive" is really a New Age Cult designed to make the embracers feel they are on a Higher Plane than Neanderthals like me. Most embracers were the 12th man on the bench on the HS Basketball Team or the ugliest girl in school...searching for meaning in their miserable, pathetic lives.
"Conservatives" really missed the boat allowing Socialists and Marxists to define themselves as "Liberals". Now we are allowing these idiots to steal a feelgood term "Progressive".
pudge...your considerable talent is needed to pen a new song...
How about this:
"Progressive?, MY ASS!"
Mr. Cynical: sounds like you should write it. :-)
