I think it's safe to say the bulk of the independent, daily tracking polls are showing tightening of the race (excluding the snapshot polls being conducted for assorted media organizations). Given the lag we've seen this election cycle between national tracking polls and battleground state polls, some key states are probably tightening too.
Does that mean McCain can win? Maybe. But a potential electoral college hole has been dug by his under-performance in Colorado and Virginia. It will take even more dramatic movement than which is occurring nationally to rescue those states in all likelihood. And his electoral college math is exceptionally difficult if both states flip.
More specifically, if media-sponsored polls are right that there is a tsunami of new , Democratic voters who will turn out to vote by Election Day then Obama wins comfortably. If not, and the electorate performs close to historical norms, it's going to be tighter than many pundits are currently predicting.
Whether that latter scenario can conclude with a McCain win is an open question.

He's a very likable guy and likely decent, God fearing, and all that rot. I'm not concerned about that. I'm concerned about his policies and political philosophy. And his almost blatant disregard for the Constitution in most all of his "proposals". (Let me state that McCain is no better in that area). If you thought things were bad before 2006, wait until we have a Marxis....er...I mean...Socialis...damn!.... I mean Democrat in the Oval Oval Office and a filibuster proof Congress. We are in for four years of pure hell. Add to that they type of judges he will likely nominate (and they will sail through without so much as a probing question). That's my BIGGEST concern with Barry winning.
Barry is likely who he says he is---if his voting record is any indication. And we got a unfiltered look at who he is when he went off script and answered Joe the Plumber's question. So, yes, I do think he is what he says he is. And THAT is what scares me. (and if you thought about it rationally, you should be scared, too)

To summarize:
"With Wall Street in turmoil and a financial system in crisis mode, companies are facing another major challenge: figuring out how to manage a new crop of young people in the work force -- the millennial generation. Born between 1980 and 2001, the millennials were coddled by their parents and nurtured with a strong sense of entitlement.
When Gretchen Neels, a Boston-based consultant, was coaching a group of college students for job interviews, she asked them how they believe employers view them. She gave them a clue, telling them that the word she was looking for begins with the letter "e." One young man shouted out, "excellent." Other students chimed in with "enthusiastic" and "energetic." Not even close. The correct answer, she said, is "entitled." "Huh?" the students responded, surprised and even hurt to think that managers are offended by their highfalutin opinions of themselves.
Millennials also want things spelled out clearly. Many flounder without precise guidelines but thrive in structured situations that provide clearly defined rules and the order that they crave. Managers will need to give step-by-step directions for handling everything from projects to voice-mail messages to client meetings. It may seem obvious that employees should show up on time, limit lunchtime to an hour and turn off cellphones during meetings. But those basics aren't necessarily apparent to many millennials.
Gail McDaniel, a corporate consultant and career coach for college students, spoke to managers at a health-care company who were frustrated by some of their millennial employees. It seems that one young man missed an important deadline, and when his manager asked him to explain, he said, "Oh, you forgot to remind me." Parents and teachers aren't doing millennials any favors by constantly adapting to their needs, Ms. McDaniel says. "Going into the workplace, they have an expectation that companies will adapt for them, too."
No wonder your generation thinks Barry is the Messiah. He's promising to take care of you. You won't have to make any decisions for yourselves. Barry will be there to guide the way for you. Just like your Mommy did.
So, unless you guys get your act together and grow up!, the US will likely end up a 3rd World nation if you are our future.
Thanks, Dave, for providing such a clear illustration of the gulf between Republicanism and Conservatism.
Because a genuine Conservative would be humble enough to remember that every single recent generation -- X'ers, Boomers, Silents, GIs, the Lost Generation -- have all been described in similar terms by their seniors at the time.
Take this passage by Evelyn Waugh in Brideshead Revisited from 1945, where the Lost narrator describes his GI subordinate:
"He seldom complained. Though himself a man to whom one could not confidently entrust the simplest duty, he had an overmastering regard for efficiency and, drawing on his modest commercial experience, he would sometimes say of the ways of the army in pay and the use of man-hours: "They couldn't get away with that in business."
He slept sound while I lay awake fretting.
In the weeks that we were together Hooper became a symbol to me of Young England, so that whenever I read some public utterance proclaiming what Youth demanded in the Future and what the world owed to Youth, I would test these general statements by substituting "Hooper" and seeing if they still seemed as plausible. Thus in the dark hour before reveille I sometimes pondered: "Hooper Rallies," "Hooper Hostels," "International Hooper Co-operation" and "the Religion of Hooper." He was the acid test of all these alloys."
Of course these days Hooper's generation has a much better press agent, and gets to be called "The Greatest Generation." But no one thought that at the time -- defeating fascism and ending the Great Depression though they may have been doing.
But, hey... McCain's campaign seems to be run by Mark Penn these days, and persists in making every single mistake Hillary Clinton's did at the end. If Republicans can't even manage to remember what didn't work as recently as 4 months ago, how can anyone expect them to remember the history and values of 60 years ago?

Sweet smell of Clinton all over again. (-:
Yeah, we know what you mean, you're just too cowardly to admit it (much like the LA Times). I mean god forbid a new organization release a video tape that is 'newsworthy' enough to run a story on it in your newspaper this April. With the outright cheerleading done by the biased press for Obama, it's understandable as supporters that you wouldn't want to release damning evidence of him playing grab ass with a couple of terrorists at a farewell party (including a toast by "the one"). Unfortunately, you can't be an outright supporter and be an objective journalist at the same time, which is what the times is trying to portrary itself as. The only credibility lost this election cylce has been the respect the American people have for the Dinosaur media who've engaged in the yellowist of "yellow journalism" culminating in the LA Times decision this week not to release a relevant news tape. Meet the Suppress
Objective journalism died with Tim Russert
LA Times new motto should be:
"All the news that's skewed to our views""
At this point, McCain's only hope may be a "dark" one, which is Osama Bin Laden releasing a tape on election eve. This would probably help McCain one to two points. Outside of that, McCain needs to win the news cycles the rest of the way. Right now, there isn't an indication of this. Obama is going on all the major news shows in the next few days. If McCain likes to gamble, then how he needs to gamble is to go on Racheal Maddow's show. Olberman would be too much of a stretch, but Maddow has demonstrated she can interview/discuss with alternative viewpoints just fine. The spats between her and Pat Buchanan are great. McCain, however, needs to get to the "other" audience. By restricting interviews to networks like Fox, he is speaking to his base. He needs to reach out to the undecideds, however, who don't necessarily care that much for Fox. McCain (and Palin) need to be on all the networks and late night shows. This is free publicity for them, and it helps to capture the news cycle. Write the story, instead of letting the other networks write the story for you.
Posted by: tc on October 30, 2008 07:33 AMNevermind, also, McCain's "palling" around and praising of G. Gordon Liddy, who is also unrepentent about his bombing attempts, which by the way have never been prosecuted.
Nevermind, also, that Palin's husband was a member of a separatist group and Palin herself addressed the group.
Nevermind, that Palin stated back in August how she was proud of Alaska (the state) owning the oil resources and distributing the wealth to the Alaska citizens.
Nevermind, the fact that the narrative McCain and Palin try to paint is so offset by the actual day-to-day images and actions of Obama (e.g., that he is a danger, he can't be trusted, yada yada yada).
No, go on Rick and keep believing your narrative, while the rest of the non-America (as Palin likes to say) goes about the actual running and cleaning of the country that has been so messed up by Bush and gang.

Blacks, Mexicans, Asians, etc., have every right to peacefully advance or defend their races in the privacy of the voting booth. So do whites. There are no PC voting criteria.
Obama, by his many associations, statements, and acts, really IS an enemy of the white race, which includes Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. If you feel guilty in that realization, then you have been "re-educated" by the propaganda of neo-communists like Ayers and Rathke, shills like Olbermann and Mathews, neo-columnists like Jonathan Alter and Denis Hamill, the public school system, RINO websites, etc.
Understand that Obama was indoctrinated in adolescence by the anti-white black racist communist Frank Davis, then he was mentored by the anti-white black racist Jeremiah Wright at his anti-white black racist church, then he became friends with anti-white black racist Muslims Louis Farakhan and Kenya's communist Raila Odinga. These are a few examples of Obama's anti-white black racist "roots." The last I checked, induction is still a method for finding truth. If it walks like a duck. Read the above Obamafile, and you too will be convinced.
If the race of a nation's ruling class is overthrown, then that nation is overthrown, and the population is easily destroyed: Marxism 101. ACORN is, among other things, a black power, election fraud, neo-communist gang. Now go defend yourselves, and vote your race at the polls. It could be your last chance.

Also look to them to try to repeat Roosevelt's MO and turn a recession into a multi-year depression and then blame it all on "8 years of Bush". They are very good at blaming everyone else for their own failures, but actually fixing anything?---not so much.

The LA Times legally agreed to not review the source or the tape when they interviewed the source. It is an assault on Freedom of the Press. McCain is asking the LA Times to break the law. Seems similar to "palling" around with Libby who continues to break the law today (i.e., possession of firearms).
Dave @28
In regards to Todd Palin's membership in the Alaska Independence Group, you are wrong in what you stated. For example, you can go here for a documented writeup. The Alaska Division of records confirmed Todd Palin's registration in the group.
Army Medic/Vet@30
Would this be in association to the bogus story about Barack's half-brother (in Kenya) also living in a slum? Yet, if you go to CNN interview and also watch the video, George Obama is quite proud of his brother and bristles at any notion that Barack "owes" him anything, and that his living conditions are poor.
Ragnar @42
You obviously don't have a clue, do you? First off, Five-thirty-eight is not a pollster. Nate and his partner are "data-crunchers." They take all the other polls and run them through computer simulations based on past voting parameters. The simulations use the polls variability to seed the runs. The results proved closer than any individual poll during the primary season (even getting NH right). The only "human" element is the weighting they give to a pollster, which is based on past historical performance of the pollster (i.e., how far off they were from the actual result). I believe, that in Nate's model, Rassmussen (who is has a slightly Republican lean) is the closest pollster.
OBTW, before this election cycle, Nate Silver was infamous for his simulations relating to baseball player statistics. He knows his statistics and how to perform computer simulations.
You can refute all you want, it doesn't change how close his simulation model has perform (both the previous baseball model and the current political model). The facts are the facts.
Cliff and Michael @45-47:
What analysis method are you using? RealClearPolitics, which as shown a Republican lean, shows the following current state:
Electoral Map
Obama 311 McCain 185 and Toss-up 85
By the poll averages, the states you mention are at the following:
Ohio - Obama +5.8
Virginia - Obama +6.5
North Carolina - Obama +2.5
Florida - Obama +3.5
Nevada - Obama +7.4
New Mexico - Obama +7.3
Colorado - Obama +6.5
And since you mentioned Iowa, and McCain still is campaigning there. Iowa is at Obama +11.4
If you go here on RCP, you will see how the Electoral College Map has changed over the past week.
If McCain had another three weeks to go, he may be able to cut the difference to margin of error, but right now he is beyond the margin of error in the above swing states, and in most of them, the state of the race hasn't changed much. I believe Florida is the only one to inch closer for McCain.
My best guess based on RCP and Five-thirty-eight's analysis is:
FL - toss-up (depends on regular voter turnout versus early turnout, which as shown an dramatic increase in black vote -- if regular turnout model prevails then give this one to McCain)
OH - Obama (based on current polling, especially in rural areas, where Obama is way ahead of where Kerry was at)
VA - Obama (based on current polling, and the McCain campaign mistakes, like his brother's comments and 911 call, VA local campaign director telling workers to tie Obama with Osama Bin Laden, and Palin's "Real-America" comments when tied with Joe McCain's "Real Virginian's" comments.)
NC - toss-up (depends on black and young voter turnout, if traditional turnout, then give to McCain)
NV, NM, CO, IA - all Obama (lead in these states too much to overcome)
PA - Obama (lead too much at this point, especially in Philadelphia suburbs, which went strongly for Bush last time)
IN - McCain
MO - McCain
GA - McCain (although Senate race there could go Democrat)
ND - McCain
MT - McCain (despite the Ron Paul write-in effort going on there)
If I adjust RCP's map to indicate the above, giving McCain my two toss-up states, I come out with Obama/Biden 311 and McCain/Palin 227. For McCain to win, he has to get the following:
PA (VA doesn't give him enough), OH, and NV. Without an additional state, beyond PA and OH, it is an Obama/Biden 270 versus McCain/Palin 268 race. The inside straight flush (or should I say Royal flush) would be to get all the current toss-up states on the RCP map, plus flip VA, PA, and OH. This would result in a McCain/Palin 281 to Obama/Biden 258 win. I would say this is their best-case scenario. His worst case scenario would be to lose all the current toss-up states and not flip the current states. This would be a Obama/Biden 396 to McCain/Palin 142 landside. At this point, one would possibly also throw AZ in the mix to make it 406 to 132 landside. I don't think this will be the outcome, it is just the worst-case scenario for McCain-Palin.
The keys will be how the polls move in VA, OH, and PA over the next few days. The key on election night will most likely be VA. If VA goes Obama, then it is likely OH and PA will also go Obama. Of course, we may not know these states until late in the evening. For sure, we probably will not know OH and FL until real late. The race will be closest there, as in past elections. MO will also be a late race, based on past history.
Posted by: tc on October 30, 2008 02:21 PMNo matter which presidential candidate is elected on Nov. 4, there's already a clear winner in the 2008 campaign season - Nate Silver, 30, the founder of polling analysis Web site FiveThirtyEight.com. ... ...now we're onto Scooter Libby? I'm confused
"In regards to LA Times releasing the tape, McCain's campaign is attempting to break a source's confidentiality. The LA Times legally agreed to not review the source or the tape when they interviewed the source.
Rubbish. How does releasing a videotape that someone handed over to a news organization reveal that sources name? The LA times' story of why they won't run it has evolved day by day trying to cover their sorry arses and hope the gullible people and Obamaphiles buy it.Nice try
"It is an assault on Freedom of the Press. McCain is asking the LA Times to break the law. Seems similar to "palling" around with Libby who continues to break the law today (i.e., possession of firearms)."
Wrong. The press is in the business of reporting the news and not disseminating it.They ran a story in April on an event that they have video of and refuse to release it to the general public because it's damning evidence to a presidential candidate they approve of. The first rule of journalism is that you report the news, and not become the news...which is what the Times has done to itself with its suppression of a newsworth video.
If the LA Times isn't going to report the news, then they should all start looking for employment in some other field.
At the risk of sounding redundant, what are you babbling about Libby continuing to break the law today?
Michael @51
You are correct that all polls have certain bias and it is important to look at the numbers behind the polls, especially breakdown of samples. This is why Fox's latest poll is getting scrutiny. It isn't because of the change in the poll, it is the dramatic shift in Republican makeup of the poll. Other pollsters haven't seen a shift in makeup of electorate. Therefore, it will take a day or two more of Fox's sampling to see if their new voter model is accurate reflection of the electorate or an outlier.
Rick D.@52
I didn't realize that Harpers was a left wing nutrag. Thanks for the info. OBTW, you do use right wing sources. Your talking points come from the Hannity's, Limbaughs, and National Reviews of the industry.
In regards to Khalidi, it is McCain's spokesperson who has called him antisemetic, but who also hasn't produced any evidence supporting this claim. Other news sources (mainstream, like ABC, NBC, et al) have been talking to his students and professors where he teaches and nothing has been uncovered. OBTW, riddle me this Batman, if the tape the LA Times has is so damaging, why did the paper still endorse Obama? The LA Times, historically, has been a Republican leaning paper, just like the Chicago Tribune.
With regards to the tape, the LA Times got the exclusive access to the tape and interview with its source on the condition that they would not reveal the source, nor the tape. If McCain camp has a problem with the paper protecting its integrity of dealing with sources, then they should take them to court to force them to reveal their source. If they have a legal standing, then they need to go for it.
I did mean G. Gordon Liddy, not Libby. My mistake in typing. It is a fact however, that Liddy's conviction for Watergate forbids him from owning or handling firearms. It is a fact that he has flaunted this and is non-repentant (to use McCain's words) about this lawlessness.
Posted by: tc on October 30, 2008 06:10 PMThen release the tape. The softball puff piece by the reporter covering it in April stated that:
'At Khalidi's 2003 farewell party, for example, a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, "then you will never see a day of peace."'
'One speaker likened "Zionist settlers on the West Bank" to Osama bin Laden, saying both had been "blinded by ideology."'
It's newsworthy to find out if there was more anti-semetic vitriol spewed than was reported by the 'reporter' in the story isn't it? Why would some moron provide a video tape to a news organization and yet doesn't want it released to the public? Plain and simple truth is the Times is stonewalling/suppressing/ the news which I pointed out above is the cardinal sin of journalism. They even refuse to release the transcripts from the video which last time I checked, wouldn't reveal the source either.
"It is a fact however, that Liddy's conviction for Watergate forbids him from owning or handling firearms. It is a fact that he has flaunted this and is non-repentant (to use McCain's words) about this lawlessness.
You may want to review your post @ 20:
"Nevermind, also, McCain's "palling" around and praising of G. Gordon Liddy, who is also unrepentent about his bombing attempts, which by the way have never been prosecuted. ~ tc"
If you'll kindly point me to a credible source that has G.Gordon Liddy making "bombing attempts" as you put it, I'd love to see it. I'm sure your apology is forthcoming for outright fabricating a charge against Liddy that has never been leveled by anyone other than yourself in a desperate attempt to carry the water for your terrorist supporting presidential choice while deflecting blame onto others. I await a retraction,tc.

Pardon me, but ONE election cycle proves NOTHING.
AND regarding the primaries.. big flipping whoop de doo.... most of the democrat primaries were CAUCUSES... no unwieldy huge numbers, no secret votes there.
Posted by: Ragnar Danneskjold on October 30, 2008 08:29 PMI don't agree with you that the LA Times should break its agreement with the source. It would destroy their credibility with future sources. If McCain camp thinks it has a legal standing, then it should pursue it. Bullying tactics are disgusting and shouldn't be tolerated.
Posted by: tc on October 31, 2008 06:08 AMYes, and the article just asserts it as fact without a citation. When I queried 'Liddy + brookings institute', it led me to a book by Peter Knight called "conspiracy culture: From kennedy to X-files"...wow, that is your source for accuracy for whether or not Liddy actually was a conspirator in a bombing plot? Next you'll have him on a Dallas Grassy knoll in November 1963. Nice try.
"I don't agree with you that the LA Times should break its agreement with the source."
Once again. releasing a video does not release the name of that person last time I checked, and what about the transcripts of the video? why is that so secretive? Hmmm?
The Times is stonewalling a National news story for political purposes, nothing more, nothing less...it is becoming the news and not reporting it...major faux paux in journalistic integrity.
Here are my current pronostications:
I see PA, VA, NC, OH, FL, CO and NV (110 Electoral Votes (EV)) as leaning, even if slightly, to McCain. I see NH and NM (9 EV) as toss-ups. I see see WI, MN and IA (27 EV) as leaning to Obama. The other states (234 EV for Obama and 185 EV for McCain) I see as solidly either Obama or McCain.
If the toss-up states go 50/50 and the leaners go 75/25, then that would put Obama with 259 and McCain with 279. On that basis, McCain would win.
If there is a surge on either side, McCain could end up with as many as 304, or Obama could end up with as many as 353. However, I don't think either of those scenarios will occur.
I think it will be very close. McCain MUST win two out of three of OH, PA and FL (winning all would pretty much seal it) to win. Obama needs to steal some states that I think are leaning to McCain to win, but he does start with more solid EV's than McCain.
Bottom line, I think whoever wins this will win with less than 300 EV's.
Posted by: Bill H on October 31, 2008 08:07 AMYou have certainly earned your Obamabot status in here. I'm almost embarrassed for you for running this asinine Obama propaganda campaign. Maybe he'll make you one of his Colonels in his new Obama youth corps he has visions of. Welcome to Socialist thought, comrade.
Posted by: Rick D. on October 31, 2008 07:37 PMHow disappointing to you that the FRIDAY Zogby poll now has McCain taking the lead 48%-47%. Or do you only give credence to the Zogby poll when it seems to support the Messiah?
Here's the headline: "ZOGBY--- McCAIN TAKES LEAD!!!!"
And here is the lede: "McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday poll. He is beginning to cut into Obama's lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all..."
That sound you hear is liberals heads exploding all over the country...
Just ahead of McCain and shaking hands with Follieri appears to be Rick Davis--McCain's top aide and now co-manager of his campaign, who accompanied him on the trip and advised the government of Montenegro. A few months after McCain's yacht party, Follieri strengthened his ties to McCain's orbit by retaining Rick Davis's well-connected Washington lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, and offering Davis both an investment deal and help in securing the Catholic vote for McCain's presidential bid. Follieri, who posed as Vatican chief financial officer in order to win friends and investments, pleaded guilty Wednesday in a Manhattan district court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering. As part of the plea, Follieri admitted to misappropriating at least $2.4 million of investor money and redirecting it to foreign personal bank accounts that were disguised as business accounts.
The photograph substantiates reports that in late August, 2006, McCain celebrated his 70th birthday aboard a yacht, the Celine Ashley, rented by A-list con man Raffaello Follieri and his then-movie star girlfriend Anne Hathaway.
In the photograph, taken in Montenegro at the end of August, McCain is shown boarding the yacht ramp towards the smiling Follieri and Hathaway.
