There are few true heroes in local politics. But Toby Nixon is a hero.
He's a principled, tireless and effective advocate for open and accountable government, election integrity and fiscal responsibility. And he's a decent human being who works well with many folks from across the political spectrum.
Nixon is currently running to retake the state House seat he formerly held and which is currently occupied by an undistinguished Democrat, Roger Goodman. Nixon says that he and Goodman agreed to run a clean, issues-oriented campaign and to avoid nastiness. Nixon has kept his end of the bargain. But Goodman's sponsors at the state Democratic party just sent out a gutterball mailer falsely accusing Nixon of "approving negative campaign tactics misleading the voters with deceptive ads". Worse, the disgusting hit piece tries to associate Toby Nixon with Richard Nixon and the Watergate break-in -- for no reason other than they happen to have the same last name.
Pathetic.

From the top down, where OhDrama, the lying, empty suited, anti-American racist bigot socialist, has lied so much on everything from publicly financing his campaign down thru everyone earning below $250,000 getting a taxeak.... down to Queen Chrissy the Tribal Ho lying about our nonexistent surplus, financing stem cell research and raising our taxes... and now down to legislative races and many of the leftist posters here: to read their words or listen to them over the radio is to here lie stacked upon lie.

I don't have anyting quantifiable except a gut reaction, but it is pretty reliable.
Toby, hang in there for a few more days.
Posted by: swatter on October 29, 2008 09:31 AMAnd if they violate that trust, all bets are off and it's open warfare.
It's time for Toby Nixon to attack, attack, attack, and point out the duplicitous and dishonorable nature of his opponent. When people blame Toby for the vitriolic nature of the campaign, he can say, "We had agreed to keep the campaign clean. But then he hit me below the belt with a sucker punch. So now it's open warfare. If he wants to dish it out, he'd better be able to take it."
Posted by: Jonathan Gardner on October 29, 2008 09:48 AMGoodman should go on record as repudiating the flier, based on his promise of issue oriented campaigning. Might even win him some votes. But going against his party is not likely to happen.
Toby Nixon is a class act. He will never resort to such tactics. That quality of his character is part of why I support him.

Posted by: kmort on October 29, 2008 10:50 AM"alleges that Rep. Toby Nixon, R-45th Legislative District, and Rebecca Japhet, Communications Director for the Senate Republican Caucus, utilized public facilities to assist Rep. Nixon's campaign for the State Senate in violation of RCW 42.52.180. The SDCC alleges that Ms. Japhet wrote a campaign press release for Rep. Nixon using public facilities and/or identified herself as a legislative employee and provided legislative contact information if any one wished further information about the release or Rep. Nixon's candidacy. The complaint infers that Rep. Nixon authorized or utilized the involvement of Ms. Japhet. RCW 42.52.180 provides in pertinent part:
(1) No state officer or state employee may use or authorize the use of facilities of an agency, directly or indirectly, for the purpose of assisting a campaign for election of a person to an office or for the promotion of or opposition to a ballot proposition."
There. That better?
Posted by: Hinton on October 29, 2008 12:01 PMSimilar thing with Richard Nixon, although obviously it came from his people and he is therefore responsible for what happened, even if he didn't explicitly approve of or know about the break-ins.
And hey, "correctnotright," an SDCC PAC (Better Future for WA) broke the law in its attacks on Val Stevens. It's a matter of fact and public record.
Good man.
Wish I could vote for him.
Posted by: Bruce Guthrie on October 29, 2008 09:52 PMGoodman...not so much.
Posted by: Michele on October 29, 2008 09:53 PMBased upon a review of the complaint and the Board's investigation, we find there are no facts or reasonable inferences there from which support the allegations that Rep. Nixon or Rebecca Japhet utilized public resources with respect to the Nixon campaign release.[Emphasis added.]
...we conclude today after investigation there is no evidence to the contrary, the complainant seems to be left with only the inference that Rep. Nixon or his campaign staff would for some reason intentionally place a partial attribution to this legislative employee on the campaign release. That inference is nonsensical as well as unsupported by any facts.
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED, pursuant to RCW 42.52.425, which grants the Board the authority to dismiss a complaint after investigation if it finds that the complaint is unfounded, that Complaint 2006 -- No. 9 is DISMISSED.
You can find the entire document at http://www.leg.wa.gov/pub/billinfo/2005-06/Pdf/Ethics/Ethics%20Complaints/ETHICSCOM2006.09.pdf and see for yourself. "correctnotright" quotes from Section 1 of this document ("Nature of the Complaint"), but intentionally failed to quote from just two pages later ("Conclusion and Order"). The "money quote", which supposedly shows that I am "Corrupt to the core, using his office illegally", is FALSE.
This posting by "correctnotright" is just another Democrat smear, based on a false accusation that he knows was dismissed as not only unfounded but "nonsensical as well as unsupported by any facts". The original accusation was purely political, and this accusation is again purely political.
How can these people expect anyone to trust a word they say when they so blatantly lie?
