Earlier this week I pushed back against an errant critique by Joel Connelly against our own Stefan Sharkansky. It seems the Spokesman Review's Jim Camden doesn't want to be left out of the party that includes some quality intra-4th Estate ribbing.

In the last 20 years, it has endorsed far more Democrats than Republicans for governor.
To save the West Side bloggers the trouble of doing their own investigation (You guys do research, right? You don't just pull stuff out of thin air? Oh, never mind.) here's a rundown of endorsements for the last 20 years:
1988: Booth Gardner (D) over Bob Williams (R)
1992: Mike Lowry (D) over Ken Eikenberry (R)
1996: Gary Locke (D) over Ellen Craswell (R)
2000: Locke (still a D) over John Carlson (R)
2004: Rossi (R) over Gregoire (D), in what best could be described as a qualified endorsement of his plan for attacking a weak economy over hers.
2008: Gregoire over Rossi.
For those keeping score at home, that's five Democrats to one Republican."

Posted by: Shanghai Dan on October 22, 2008 09:42 PM"Endorsements box score For any liberals who fume that The Columbian is way too conservative: We endorsed 13 Democrats in the past two weeks.
For any conservatives who yelp that were way too liberal: We endorsed nine Republicans.
In legislative races, we endorsed six Democrats and five Republicans.
In county commissioner races, we endorsed one Democrat and one Republican.
Finally, to anyone who thinks any of this matters: It doesnt. We endorse the best candidate in each race (strictly our opinion, remember), party notwithstanding. If that person represents the Progressive Lying Golfers Party, well, so be it."
That is a lie. An absolute, out and out lie.
Let's just take the race for state treasurer, shall we?
In this corner, Rep. Jim McIntire, Democrat.
In THIS corner, we have Deputy State Treasurer Allan Martin, Republican.
Now, I've already said that the Columbian endorsed McIntire, although, oddly, they didn't say why, except for this garbage: "Jim McIntire has the vast legislative and academic acumen in fiscal issues to warrant election as a replacement for outgoing state treasurer Mike Murphy."
Really? He has more "legislative and academic acumen in fiscal issues?" He's also a RABID supporter of a state income tax, though not surprisingly, the Bankrupt Columbian seems to have left that tidbit out.
Of course, in picking McIntire's "acumen," they completely overlooked that Martin's experience and his OWN "acumen" (I guess deputy state treasurers are not possessed of any "acumen" on their own.) has been endorsed by 31 of the 39 county treasurers (who, you might think, would know "acumen" when they see it) AND he's been endorsed by the CURRENT DEMOCRAT STATE TREASURER.
So, why did they endorse the guy who has precisely ZERO experience in the state treasurer's office over that of the democrat-incumbent endorsed deputy state treasurer?
Because McIntire is a democrat. Period.
The Bankrupt Columbian spews: "We endorse the best candidate in each race (strictly our opinion, remember), party notwithstanding."
Obviously, that is, as I've more or less proven, an outright lie.
So, it was just sheer coincidence that in EVERY open seat, they endorsed a democrat; and they endorsed NO republican over ANY democrat incumbent.
There are lies, damned lies and the editorial page editor of the Bankrupt Columbian.
We are lucky that most of the time lives don't depend on truth in journalism. Oh wait ... they do.
