Obama's March to the Sea

Patrick Ruffini declares the potential down-the-ballot impacts of Obama's massive money machine to be "the political equivalent of Sherman's March."

All too true, perhaps. For the true military history buff, I might offer the crushing pursuit of the Prussians by Napoleon's Grand Army following the dual victories at Jena and Auerstadt in 1806 as an even better analogy (the Prussians did eventually retool their army in response and help crush Napoleon in later years), but the potential impact Ruffini describes is not to be ignored.

Meanwhile, Ruffini's post also enunciates the obvious fact that public financing of Presidential elections is "dead, dead, dead." Obama's use of the Internet has totally changed how finances in such campaigns work. Had the GOP candidate not been John McCain - he of zero, pre-Palin enthusiasm from the conservative base - both sides would have figured that out this year.

Obama is a unique case, perhaps, though Bush and Kerry were fundraising machines too and could have easily have forgone the public financing system in full if needed. What then to make of Dino Rossi's Obama-like donor base, in unheard of numbers - over 52,000 - with an exceptionally modest average contribution size of under $100?

Is Rossi's success a function of the absolutely extraordinary nature of this gubernatorial contest, or will future statewide candidates in high profile races be able to tap a similar grassroots source of campaign funds?

That probably remains to be seen.

Rossi's success is a function of the fact that he has been able to find a single talking point and hammer away at it in the media, while his opponent has been floundering while trying to find a message. Given that most of the voting public takes away the most basic of talking points, it has been remarkably effective.

Lets cut through the crap you should stand behind your beliefs and say I am a man and my name is.....do you want respect then do it. Otherwise shut the hell up.

3. It helps if you fundraise from outside the country, too. Works well for Obama...

4. far too charitable to hussein obama...the bulk of his money comes from people that do not exist or are from foreign countries...which makes it totally illegal...

5. Perhaps even the German Blitzkrieg could be yet another analogy in this case.

6. Jim @ 2:

Just curious... I am still supposed to believe that Rossi will cut back the functions of government when elected even though he has not been man enough to say ONE SINGLE thing a Rossi administration would cut???

7. Interesting how the prominent writers on this board have NOT donated money to the McCain campaign (at least according to federal records).

For all the support this site gives to the Republican Party locally and nationally it seems that the admins are not willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Eric Earling has donated nothing.

Stefan Sharkansky has donated nothing.

Pudge has donated nothing (gotta love WhoIs.net).

8. The sad, sad irony is that McCain was the first major politician to use the Internet for fundraising in any serious way -- EIGHT YEARS AGO. From what I recall, he had a URL on the podium and/or background and pulled in something like $2 million in a short time from it.

Note to Cato: The national databases must not be updated because there are a LOT of people I know personally who aren't showing up -- on both sides of the aisle. It also could be that smaller donations -- $25 or $50 a shot -- aren't being logged in a meaningful way.

9. It isn't wise to make statements that give your hand away but I know when it happens people like will be the first to howl like stuck pigs.Whats the alternative more spending and higher taxes at the state and federal levels where does it end? I go to work to make money to make a good life for myself and you want to take that away and "spread the wealth" to those who have less for any reason. How fair is that really. I don't mind paying taxes but in the end those new tax rates will be paid by us all (thats the true trickle doewn) again how much and where will it all end! Spreading the wealth is the basis of socialism and you know it, government isn't there for "spreading the wealth" but for allowing a free people to make it. So lets keep your damn hand off my wallet i'll keep my fist off your mouth. As i've asked others, if you are so sure your views are true maybe you should come out of that closet and tell us your name. If not than your opinion is not to taken seriously since you won't truely stand behind it. Maybe we all should, I do.
