Sunday's news today: Times endorses Reichert - UPDATED

The Ed cetera blog breaks the news, you can read the full Sunday editorial here.

One passage in particular should stand out to regular readers of Sound Politics:

On the important issue of trade, the most significant differences arise. Burner is closer to the national Democratic stance that trade must be offset with demands on other countries unassociated with trade itself. Washington Democratic representatives in Congress are consistently disappointing when they put their party's positions above this state's trade economy. It's a safe position for incumbents without serious Republican opposition. But in Burner's case, another vote stalling free-trade agreements with Colombia and South Korea is not needed.

Bluntly put, Reichert is simply a good fit for his district. Just part of the reason why he keeps holding up respectably under attacks from the other side, despite his lean-Democrat district.

UPDATE: readers may recall the Times endorsed Reichert in 2006 too - and absolutely hammered Burner while doing so.

The P-I is the paper that has switched from that year.

1. The eight-year-old liberal refrain of "Republican candidate ____ is just like George W. Bush" is wearing a little thin, and Burner's poll numbers prove it.

Now I can't wait for the Bush backlash to smack Queen Christine. It's killing her in the polls, too. I noticed at the third debate that she dropped the "just like George W. Bush" line completely. Obviously the focus groups let her have it.

2. Burner never once mentioned Bush's name in the Seattle Times/City Club debate either (although she often dissed "the current administration". There must be a directive from the Democrat dictators in D.C. telling candidates that the Bush thing isn't working anymore and to lay off.

3. Geez, the PI and the Times both for Reichert? Who's next, The Stranger?

diamond@2,

Was the word "Bush" in one of the squares of the Burner Bingo game handed out at that debate?

4. Smoley @3 - I can't remember if Bush was a Bingo square, but Burner's use of the phrase "middle class" was frequent enough to make for an exciting drinking game. I wanted to pop open a beer every time she said it - and she said it OFTEN. Amazing, isn't it, how the dems have to resort to class warfare to fire up the base.

5. Another well deserved slap for Goldy and the Nutroots.

Going to Camp Nutstone and really, really wanting to be in congress are not actual job qualifications for a US Rep.

6. I am sure the fact that Reichert is practically the least effective member of congress, was the main reason for the Times alternate universe endorsement. Leave it to the "I Hate the Estate Tax" Blethen for this bs endorsement.

In a right wing fantasy world Reichert makes a good congressman. Slavery is freedom. Ignorance is strength.... etc.....world.

How many of you would support trade policies that hurt Washington State, but helped the rest of the country?

I really loved the commercial I saw today blaming liberals in congress for the banking meltdown. It takes a certain type of inbreeding to be influenced by and ad as wrong as this on this many different levels. It appears to be aimed at the people with single digit IQ's.

Keep it up. The number of lemmings willing to jump off that GOP cliff is shrinking more every day. Soon only the truly genetically challenged, world is only 6,000 years old jesus creeps, mouth breathers, and multi-billionaires will be voting Republicon.

Reality will have won. America will be free of the corrupt corporate tyranny.

All Facts Support My Positions.

7. Factless struggled to spit out:

Reichert is practically the least effective member of congress,

The FACT that the media thinks Reichert is more qualified than Burner must really eat you alive. I mean, if Reichert really is about the least effective member of Congress, what does that say about your waste of space candidate?

8. Dear Darcy: Even though you hang with the shrieking KOS crowd, they aren't really representative of the district you're trying to represent. Just a hint.

9. Factless moronically spewed: "Reality will have won. America will be free of the corrupt corporate tyranny"

And on with the new era of democratic centralism so favored by your hero, Joe Stalin... right, idiot stick?

And with the dual endorsement of Reichert, even by Pravda on Sound, it would appear that, in fact, you're finally right about ONE thing:

Reality DID win. And it does suck to be you.

10. It's SO not over yet. Zogby says presidential race still too close too call. Could come down to the last week. Keep on keepi' on, everybody!

11. Michele - I'm so not invested any more in the POTUS race. Either McCain or Obama is horrible. Makes no more difference to me. In fact I'm glad McCain will lose, that way Palin's career will not be finished by a failed McCain presidency.

Romney/Palin in 2012(but she'll have to earn it next time).

12. #6: You really don't get it, do you? Did you realize that Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are multibillionaires who vote democrat?? Look at all the rich Hollywood-ites who are democrat. And hey--Oprah has more money than you'll ever see. She's democrat. You have held onto some old notions that your party has brainwashed you with. think, dk, think!

13. I only want McCain in so we can get Palin into the DC scene, crusader. And he is far better than Obama, as these are the two choices we have. Frankly, I didn't vote for ANYONE in the presidential primary, and I always vote! But not the '08 presidential primary. I didn't like any of them. Romney is the candidate that should do better than he did, because he has a great resume. But he wasn't a good campaigner. He talked very democrat many times. It was weird.

Posted by: Michele on October 11, 2008 01:07 AM
14. Romney is a master communicator and a self-made businessman. He's also been a governor. I don't think Palin needs to be in DC at the cost of her career. Mark my words, if McCain becomes POTUS, Palin will sink tied to his anchor. Thankfully he has no chance to win and her career will still have life - if she puts in the policy work the next 3 years.

15. This is no surprise. The Times has always endorsed Reichert.

The race hardly matters this year. Burner is uninspiring.

The 8th could find a better fit, someone more articulate and more effective than Reichert to serve it in Congress. The district does deserve better.

But Dave is a terrific place holder. It actually helps to have a Republican in Congress from Western Washington sometimes.

16. more effective

That would be difficult. He was ranked behind Norm Dicks last time, but ahead of the rest of the delegation.

Anyhow, Reichert is going to win this one pretty easy and we'll never hear from Darcy Burner again unless she's smart and moves to McDermott's district when he finally leaves.

17. Crusader, if Obama gets in with a democrat congress, we will have tax increases. Not only is that terrible, but especially terrible when tax cuts would be a lot more helpful to move things ahead in today's banking crisis that the democrats didn't care to fix when others saw it coming and were holding hearings about it.

No way do I want tax increases. Talk about kicking a country when it's down!

18. RE #17

DEM CONGRESS PLANS ON OBAMA WIN; PELOSI MAY CALL HOUSE BACK...

WASHINGTON (AP) - After consulting with Barack Obama, Democratic leaders are likely to call Congress back to work after the election in hopes of passing legislation that would include extended jobless benefits, money for food stamps and possibly a tax rebate, officials said Saturday.

The bill's total cost could reach $150 billion, these officials said.

Arrogant thieves.

19. Yawn. The Times' editorial board endorsed Linda Smith in 1996, despite (because?) she was rated as "the most right-wing Member of Congress" in her first term. She barely defeated Mr. Baird (the current holder of that office), which led John Carlson to admit the Times' endorsement allowed her to squeak to her bare victory that year.

Last time around, the Times' editorialists had to grovel before their boss, and endorse Mike!@*&@#$#!! over Senator Cantwell, even as they admitted her work on our behalf outweighed Mike's friendship with Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Seven Indictments). Mr. Blethen loathes the inheritance tax (as does anyone who fears having to earn his own way in our world), and any politician who promises to end it, no matter how wildly unsuitable for office, gets the Times' endorsement.

Please remind us -- in which part of the 8th CD is the Times' editorial office?

20. I had the fortunate experience of talking to a Darcy Burner phone bank volunteer. Sadly the young man could only recite the same old DNC talking points I've heard from the Democrat Party for eight long years. I honestly was hoping for something so much more, and fresh. If all Democrats have to go on is Bush this and Bush that, then they are in serious trouble as a party, and I, for one, refuse to listen to their childish blame game. Democrats voted to go to war, and voted to fund it, but refuse to own up to that. On energy, I asked the young man to show me how to get to work [22 miles from home] other than in my car. Democrats should shut up about getting us off foriegn oil when they only have pipe dreams and NO immediate replacement. Grow up, this is my life you are talking about, not some popular ideological cause that makes you feel good. I have a mortgage and kids to feed. It's time for this country to contemplate, in a very serious way, Term Limits. For now I'll vote for The Sheriff again as he is a safe, and steady guy over a girl still in her teen years.
