If the current national financial debacle and the government's role in causing it anger you, take a look at local government. The Washington Policy Center has just released a brief on property taxes and government spending that is a real eye opener. Take it with you to your next local candidate or elected official forum. To read a pdf format of the brief, click on the blue words above.

1. Can we have an initiative that shoves all the levies into the November ballots? Seeing the list of levies all at once brings home just how they've been separated off from the general fund.
2. I don't think I really, really needed to see this. It was so much better with head in sand.
Possibly, just possibly, next year some politicos with fiscal restraint can be voted in.
3. Swatter.
Buddy what's up. I've never seen you post so much. (-:
4. Yeah...Right! We must support the Pike Place Market and our Green Spaces at all Cost. The Pike Place Market has been a hole in the Tax Payer's wallet for many years. It should have been left to die a natural Death long ago. It has been a vehicle by Local Government to Bleed the Tax Payer for more funds to live high and wide. Don't you believe that the Taxes collected All go to keep the Market alive. Only, a small symbolic portion goes in that direction, the rest goes to the City's Coffers. These two propositions are simply a game-play for more of your money. What a Rip-Off!
5. My perspective is not one nickel more for property taxes. This last year, when housing values went down, Snohomish County graciously lowered the assessed value of my house. Curiously, the value of the property that my house sits on went up just about exactly as much.
I heard that I wasn't unique.
Sort of makes you say 'hmmmm'.
6. I'm willing to pay more in property taxes to fund economic justice!
7. Sorry there, Medic. I was kind of joking up above. However, I don't like my backup position on this election. I won't want my country to go to hell in a hand basket due the false prophet.
And with all the nimrods posting, I guess sometimes it is hard to tell a joke from real thoughts. Also, you will notice that during posts where the thread gets hijacked, I usually won't post, excepting Cato the Disgraced.
On this one, it is good someone finally can put pen to pencil to show how the revenues to the city skyrocket and yet there seems to be no accounting for what is spent.
8. swatter - you are just against economic justice!!!
9. Economic Justice must be the new word for Communism. Take from those who work to give to those who dont.
The costs increase every year. You get less value for your money. Property tax is where the old on a fix income will lose thier homes. But Crusader just wants to keep it going up and up. You get to a point where you will get less and less revenue. Look at the Cigarette tax. Raised it so high that the overall revenue dropped. Expect revenue was spent and never showed up. GOvernment efficiency. People will move to where they can afford homes and live a good life. Hard to find in this area. But who taxes the least may get the biggest growth. Someone will lose.
10. My first inclination is to say, "Hell, vote for it. Vote for all the new taxes. The property owners don't care and the renters don't mind an incrase. We don't have to have the money. We can do on credit. Forget the primary purpose of city government. Let's go for broke. Then I come to my senses and think that if they want the market renovated let the downtown business community foot the bill. They burn up enough of the taxpayer's money as is to keep the money rolling into their pockets. They've got two sports stadiums, a couple of exhibition halls, an aquarium, an art museum and the Seattle Center. Let 'em rent out space.
