My evening is too hectic to live blog the Governor's race debate in Yakima that is being broadcast on PBS stations across the state. I'll be watching via DVR and offer thoughts later. For now, consider this an open thread on the debate itself.

Posted by: Glenno on October 1, 2008 07:44 PMOne more thing to add...great line by Rossi to hammer Gregoire about her/Dem's lawsit using the GOP label would be like sueing Gregoire because she didn't use Christine, but uses Chris in her campagin...
Posted by: Glenno on October 1, 2008 07:52 PMBesides, your delusional forecast is off topic - this is about the debate, not what would happen if the majority in many of the states would be so ignorant and misled so as to drink the Kool-Aid.
Funny the crowd reaction on the "I didn't have anything to with that" and "I only know what I read in the newspaper" lines.
I wonder how many of her supporters in the crowd had to be shipped to Yakima, and what the Queen thought when she saw Rossi signs 50-1 to hers in travels over there. Oh, wait, she probably flew over on Air Gregoire (funded by us).

Posted by: Keith on October 1, 2008 08:36 PMIn a moment of uncharacteristically honest truth-telling, her emphatic non-vocal response should give anyone pause to vote her in for a second disasterous term.
re-elect Dino Rossi
Posted by: Rick D. on October 1, 2008 08:49 PMWe will get servants of the people as leaders again, people like Brian Sonntag and Rob McKenna, instead of Government people last candidates and political hacks which swarm the halls and chambers of Olympia today.
They feel non of the fiscal pain at all that we are experiencing, they have permanent jobs, great benefits and a lifelong retirement to look forward to.
Hiring freezes, that Gregoire just recently started in time for her re-election bid (and will forget about again on Nov 5th) after adding over 8100 new employees in 4 years, should be expanded to actually diminish government size and scope over the next four years.
With those and other cuts he can easily cut 3.2 Billion out of Washington State Government.
We Know Gregoire will for sure NOT reduce the size or the contempt of Washington State government, she has already proven that!
The debate was a delight to watch, but I had to keep shushing my mom and sister who were distressed over homework.
Posted by: Cydney on October 1, 2008 09:18 PMRossi has learned as a politician what to say in these heated debates. Mark my words, he will cut the crap out of government from the top down and will insall leaders who will start serving the people again.
But he won't and shouldn't say it all in a debate or a heated political environment where it will be on the next day Gregoire TV add.
He said tonight very clearly he would replace many top people - with people who will serve the people not the state government.
And No, Government should not waste money in these days. They should get on a diet like the people they serve have to.
Ask a few people in the real world what kind of raises they got this year? If any!

Yes, that is a GREAT line - I heard someone say something of the sort on the radio back when that stuff was all going on, and I thought it was a fantastic point.
Please, God...let this be a BIG Rossi win, so it can't be ACORNed.
Posted by: Renee on October 1, 2008 11:04 PMI will mark your words. Just like I marked the words of all the conservatives that fell for Bush as someone who would cut government as well. I have noticed a pattern. Conservative politicians that talk about how they will cut government but do not ever mention what specific services they will cut never end up with a smaller budget when they are done. Conservative voters however fall for it, vote for them, make excuses for a while and eventually give up on them but claim the next one will be better.
Posted by: Lysander on October 2, 2008 04:04 AM"Conservative voters however fall for it, vote for them, make excuses for a while and eventually give up on them but claim the next one will be better."
It's not that we "fall" for anything. We have two choices; one who's for a more limited government and the other is an unabashed big government proponent. Unfortunately, this isn't 'the price is right' where we have a door number 3 to choose from, so we make our choice of what's available. Beats the hell out of whining about both choices and choosing to sit out the election believing your noble approach is somehow advancing anything productive.
Rossi probably is better than Gregoire. Voting for Rossi however is not the best option long term. growing government at a slower pace is still a bad choice that should not be made. We are better off sending a message that it is a bad choice and hopefully one of the two parties will get the message and chose a true small government candidate the next time around. That will never happen if you chose rossi.
Posted by: Lysander on October 2, 2008 07:19 AMWTF??
Growing government at a slower pace is still a bad choice?? Are you nuts?? Gregoire increased spending by 33% in her term...$8 BILLION.
What do you want for the next 4 years??
$10 BILLION of increased spending??
Where will the money come from in this sour economy??
TAX INCREASES!!
Lysander---Thank you for your honest, forthright opinion. It clearly speaks to all of us that Gregoire will support massive Tax Increases to continue her accelerating pace of spending!
The problem with that is once you have that "big government" that you've helped usher in, there is an equally diminishing chance of actually reverting back to the smaller government you want. It's the ultimate finger in the dyke (head out of the gutter Duffman!) argument about stopping the onrush of water cascading in. Rossi is certainly less likely to expand the state government while Gregoire has expanded it immensely in her short time there. I think you've got Rossi completely misjudged however.
I agree both parties are heading us down the wrong track, but I need to hop on the locomotive that is heading there at a slower pace and hope for a connecting route headed the other direction.
Posted by: Rick D. on October 2, 2008 08:56 AMYou keep saying "Voting for Rossi however is not the best option long term."
Can you explain this please? I am not understanding your logic as I see Gregoire is the worst option for the long term.
Posted by: Chris on October 2, 2008 01:13 PMI agree. Once you get giant government it is hard to get it to shrink. That is what I do not think Rossi nor his supporters understand. Rossi will not decrease government. He will merely try to run it a little more efficiently. If effective we will see spending grow only slowly rather than fastly. But it will still do all it still does and we will continue to see it grow. I DO NOT WANT IT TO GROW.
If we send a message that we will only vote for candidates that shrink government, that elliminate entire agencies so that they do not grow again 4 years later, that actually are not content to just say the status quo is okay (like Rossi is saying) then we might have a few more bad years, but we will eventually get a candidate that will do what we want.
Posted by: Lysander on October 2, 2008 08:24 PMWhat I am saying is that if you are given the choice between evil or evil and you chose the lesser, you still get lesser. If you instead stand up and insist a better choice eventually you will get a better choice and we can then begin making improvements.
Do not settle for anything less than a good candidate that will actually stand up and proudly say that they will return government back to its intended size.
