With the wind at their backs thanks to the Seattle Times editorial page, the Rossi campaign hits back on Gregoire's disingenuous stem cell gambit:

It's 6-weeks, but for some reason she thought she needed to change the subject away from real state issues. Fortunately for us she walked right into her own trap.
Posted by: Editor on September 23, 2008 07:59 PMAfter seeing it, I'm glad they made out the liar and empty promises she perpetuates.
That being said, I hope it is done. Move onto the issues that every naysayer is complaining he doesn't address, stick it to them and let's win this thing.
Don't let the stem cell research issue derail Dino's campaign like Palin derailed Obama's.
Focus on the real issues facing the state.

I'm actually disappointed in Dino.
Posted by: ferrous on September 24, 2008 02:14 AMNeither Rossi (nor Gregoire for that matter) is actually proposing any additional funding for stem cell research of any kind. He's only responding to her erroneously vague statement that he "opposes stem cell research," which he doesn't.
Posted by: Eric Earling on September 24, 2008 06:32 AMRossi is having to spend money debunking lies instead of laying down plans that contrast himself with Gregoire- ie fixing schools, getting responsible about how we spend money fixing the environment (norm dicks son....).
Rossi had better get on the offensive on real issues or Gregoire's mud slinging may be enough to muddy the water to a 50.0000000000000001% again.
Posted by: Andy on September 24, 2008 08:35 AMNot really. No one is really talking about stem cell research as a serious issue in the campaign. The only attention she's garnered with this is negative. This only puts more light on her lack accomplishments in office.
Posted by: Palouse on September 24, 2008 08:43 AMWhat Rossi needs to be running ads on is schools, roads, budget, and.... the environment, not Gregoire's lies.
I say the environment because that's the human shield she is REALLY going to run with, and Rossi's campaign has been weak on it and the windmill farm (however stupid) is the one thing Gregoire has actually done- and she'll make it sound like "that's just the down payment on our investment into a new economy based on green energy and green collar jobs while Rossi just talks about laying asphalt funded by cutting childrens health insurance."
Democrats may be inept at running state government, but they are great at spinning.
Posted by: Andy on September 24, 2008 01:12 PMNot very effectively, I'm afraid. Stating that her ads are about him "deceptive... OK... now tell them HOW she lied and then tell them the TRUTH about your position.
The ad just misses... perhaps by the constraints of time, but this add is equally "vague".
Posted by: Ragnar Danneskjold on September 24, 2008 01:31 PMThere are at least 4 actual sub-categories of positions to this issue of which both candidates seem to purposely avoid one or more when criticizing their opponent or stating their own position:
1. Supporting state funding of stem-cell research
2. Opposing state funding of stem-cell research
3. Supporting the legality of all stem-cell research, including the kind that uses and destroys embryos (tiny babies).
4. Supporting the legality of stem-cell research that doesn't use or destroy embryos.
Gregoire has two ads on the subject. The one with the man with Parkinson's actually states the distinction of embryonic stem-cell research and rightly says that Dino opposes it. I gave Gregoire credit for that, and I actually called it a "pro-Dino ad". In the other one with the woman speaking of her son, Gregoire chooses the vague approach and misleads with the claim that he opposes it, as if to say "all of it". Of this one, I called it a "softball" and hoped Dino would hit this one out of the park and use that as an opportunity to state his real position clearly and persuade others in the process, attracting more voters to him. But he chose to bunt. At best, he's made his die hard supporters happy by calling his opponent a liar. At worse, he's confused some fiscal conservatives into believing that Gregoire should have kept her promise to use state funds to support stem-cell research, and some social conservatives wishing he would champion the right to life by stating why he's against embryonic stem-cell research, all while emboldening the "pro-choice" crowd that supports Gregoire.
He missed an opportunity for a homerun. Who's his coach, by the way?
