Mt. Rainier Delivery Truck

While I was hiking on Mt. Rainier last week, I saw this helicopter deliver load after load of supplies higher on the mountain.

Helicopter on Mt. Rainier

Two of the loads, I was told, went up to Camp Muir.   The other loads were delivered lower on the mountain, and were supplies for repair work on trails and, perhaps, meadows.

It may seem odd to use a helicopter as a delivery truck, but a helicopter is often the most practical way to get substantial loads up on the mountain.

Cross posted at Jim Miller on Politics.

(One political thought:  The Bush administration has spent large sums improving facilities at Mt. Rainier.  After the disastrous flood of 2006, emergency appropriations were obtained to repair the damage, especially to the roads that had been wiped out.   The old Jackson Visitor Center is being replaced by a new building more suited to the mountain — though perhaps not as well suited to Hawaii.  On the whole, the meadows around Paradise look much better than they did a decade ago, fewer bare spots, less obvious damage.

In short, President Bush has been a good steward of this park — though he has not received much credit for his stewardship from "mainstream" journalists.)

1. Well let me step in with you and say "way to go, Mr. President." I love national parks and have been delighted by them since my parents introduced them to me as a kid. Back then, I once got a book about all the western national parks, and I treasured that book dearly. Some of these parks are not known as well as others but special, nonetheless, such as Mt. Lassen Natl. Park in remote N. California. It was a thrill for me to eventually visit it and discover the amazing the volcanic treasures it holds.

2. "Expect to become extremely poor in the future."
OK, will this happen before or after the global warming/climate change planetary emergency?

3. The helicopter is delivering bricks of BC Bud to those Republicans who like to smoke pot but prefer to do it away from anybody who might turn them in, like in a remote corner of a national park.

And judging by this financial mess, they're got every right to fire-up the bong!

Legalize marijuana now!

4. David - Thank for conceding my point. (If you wonder why I say that, take a look at this post.)

Now please go back to the topic, Mt. Rainier.

5. Door Mathews... are you fringe nutters on some sort of a roster? Seems like every couple of days we get a complete, blithering idiot from the left that we stomp for awhile before he goes away.

Here's a clue, moron: you don't like what we post here? Then don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

6. Hinton,

No shiz. Lately it seems that there are a group of "drive-by" posters that visit this website frequently and spew a bunch of nonsense and outright lies, get debunked, then jump out of the ring and tag another to replace them, usually hijacking the topic of the thread to one of their "Talking Points of the Day".

I used to think this was a random occurrence (knotheads drifting over from HA.org or Blatherwatch), but it seems to be more frequent now - seemingly a concentrated effort with the sole purpose to disrupt the blog on a daily basis.

I like healthy debate as much as the next guy, but these folks don't want to engage in debate - they sling poop, call names, and then leave when they are proven wrong. So much for intellectual discourse with the other side of the political spectrum. Matthews, I only have this to offer to you sir - Don't let the door hit ya, where the good Lord split ya.

7. That is the helicopter taking David Mathews his cocaine supply. He is doing a flurry of posting coming of the woodwork to change the subject and distract posters from the true intent of the helicopter.

8. Would it be too much to ask that hyperactive trolls like David Mathews be either banned or deleted? Normal people could (and frequently do) waste far too much time responding to ill-informed, inflamatory, and idiotic posts.

Better that he be made to go away, and we all commit the resulting free time to go post on independent or neutral blogs to win some actual hearts and minds.

It's not really a violation of free speech, as he wouldn't be prevented from expressing his opinions, just prevented from expressing them HERE, on a site paid for and supported by conservatives. It would only be a violation of his rights if he were blocked at the source, say by a volley of complaints directed at his ISP, which I do not advocate AT ALL. Let him post his bile on any of the multitude of liberal sites and g*d bless him.

Just a suggestion.

9. Imagine how bad things would be if Kerry would
have been elected or Gore even worse. Bush has had
alot of problems thrown in front of him. Time will
show him to be a great President.

10. I thought Congress appropriated funds - where does the President get the funds to spend except from Congress appropriating the money?

Say that the administration administered the funds they were given more efficiently, stretching appropriated dollars further (if that is true), but crediting the President with "spending more" isn't true.

Who really spent more ? We taxpayers. I think we should get the credit here.

11. Comments from David Matthews should be removed if he doesn't stick to the topic which is 100% of the time. Of course, that would raise the bar for everyone else, but I don't have a problem with that.

12. Retirement is a good thing, especially when you have the kind of Pension Gregoire has

So Bye Bye Gregoire.

Wish I had a life long pension, all I get is life long massive tax increases from your type.

I'll be dead before I pay them all.

13. That's the new location for the Governor's mansion, when the "failed economic policies of George Bush" cause the ocean to not only become acidic, but to rise to 12,000 feet above sea level.

14. @19,

I gotta give it to ya, that was pretty darn funny.

Or how about this one...

King County finds new location to store solid waste after all its landfills have been filled with plastic shopping bags.

15. Matthews,

"Ignorant comments such as these reveal beyond any reasonable doubt that SoundPolitics is a blog written by idiots for idiots."

And yet, here you are, one of the most prolific posters on this blog! LOL! You are truly a comedic treasure, Mr. Matthews!

Speaking on behalf of my carbon-belching SUV, my incandescent bulbs, and my weekly trashcan full of plastic bags, we thank you for your insight and valuable idiotic contributions to this blog. God bless!
