Nuggets from the Live Blog

A couple points from the coverage of McCain's speech deserve separate attention, aside from tonight at the GOP convention. Indications of how this race has changed...

6:24 pm - Have some SurveyUSA polls while you're at it. Note Jim Miller's post below on the main page, noting that 52% of registered voters in Washington state think the media is rooting for Obama. In the crosstabs: 56% of Independents say the media is doing just that on Obama's behalf, versus only 10% saying the media is on McCain's side and 29% saying it's fair to both sides.

And that's in left-of-center Washington state.

Then, via HotAir, see this SurveyUSA product too:

24 hours ago, independent voters nationwide were split on whether Palin was an asset or a liability to McCain's campaign. Today, by a 2:1 margin, independents say Palin is an asset. Overnight, the percentage calling the Alaska governor an asset to the campaign climbed 13 points; the percentage calling her a liability fell 17 points.

And this too...

6:32 pm - Still have any doubts about the impact of Palin's speech? Hillary and other Democratic women are now being unleashed to counter her. And there's this: "[Obama strategist David] Axelrod says Obama will not challenge Palin's experience."

Hmmm.

1. The R's convention delegates and speakers seemed far more mature, happy, and civil than the D's. The D's affect, maturity, and depth of insight seemed somehow stunted or arrested. The D's acted like the rebellious children of the R's. Did anyone else notice that?

2. I could see Joe Biden getting a "sudden illness" in a couple weeks if this keeps up. Hillary is waiting in the wings.

3. Given the relative slow start in deference to concerns about Hurricane Gustav, I think this convention went better than anyone could have possibly hoped for on such an abbreviated schedule.

Though she wasn't my first choice for VP for various reasons (most of all location) she's proven she's far and away more qualified than the chicago rung climber so set on getting to and grabbing that golden ring, that he's forgotten what it takes to do the heavy lifting in order to achieve it. Obama is looking more and more each passing day like the empty suit with the photogenic face and teleprompter sermon.

By November it will be clear, the "Wartime Hero" or the "Peacetime Zero"...

4. Pretty much all members of my extended family on my side are republican voters, except my cousin's daughter. She's somewhat left-leaning, but told us tonight that she switched from Obama to McCain after Obama named Joe Biden to the D ticket! I thought that was interesting. Biden just didn't seem to be an attractive add, imo.

5. Pirate, I've noticed the same thing at the last two D conventions. They are trying hard to sound as if they actually like this country (remember Michelle Obama & Bill Ayers & Jeremiah are on their side). I think it's also that they can't really say what they're for, to the degree that they'd like to, because for most of them --saying "we need higher taxes" doesn't really sell with the general public. It's them having to try to be something they're really not, in order to try to connect with viewers.

6. After loosing in '04, Democrats were heard to say what they needed for the next Presidential election was someone who "appears sincere"...why not just nominate a sincere candidate, unless they don't have any.

7. The funniest convention event? When the CNN harpy Andrea Mitchell was drowned in balloons by delegates, preventing her from interviewing anyone! Poor Andrea. The R's should refuse to be interviewed or questioned by any reporters known to be D partisans.
