In a Fred Walser mail piece I received today, under the header, "Sometimes, our elected officials do confusing things...," Fred Walser claims that incumbent Senator "Val Stevens told local residents they didn't have to cooperate with police. She said, they should hold up a card that reads, 'you don't have authority over me.'"
As usual -- Fred Walser was convicted in June of lying to public officials, and sentenced to a year in jail for it -- Fred Walser is lying.
His language clearly implies that Stevens is talking about all residents and all police, but Stevens was specifically and clearly talking about tribal police having no authority over non-tribal residents. Lies by omission and implication are still lies.
And what she said was based on an opinion from the state Attorney General's office, which had just concluded that tribal police officers "generally lack authority to issue citations to non-Indians for traffic activity on public roadways and highways" on reservations.
Apart from the fact that Fred Walser is lying, Walser also is apparently implying that he believes that tribal police SHOULD have authority over non-tribal residents, which isn't necessarily the best position to take in the 39th District.
Fred Walser continues to have a serious problem simply telling the truth, like when he filed a false sexual harassment report, manufactured a fake log in a coverup, told an officer to fake an overtime log, and so on. On Tuesday I went to a forum held by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, in which Fred Walser took credit for things he never did, including getting money for U.S. 2 safety during the last legislative session.
Fred Walser even had the gall to say he wants to work on "accountability" and "openness and transparency" in government, despite -- as a public official himself -- lying to the public for over a year.
Fred Walser has not given the people a single reason to trust him in the face of his many violations of the public trust, and blatantly lying about his opponent in a mail piece isn't going to help him gain a single voter's trust.

Posted by pudge at August 14, 2008 06:36 PM | Email ThisThe Attorney General opinion simply said that tribal police officers did not have the authority to issue traffic citations for Washington state courts, not that they did not have the authority to stop and arrest non-Indians on reservation lands.
A traffic citation, under Washington state law, has to be issued by a law enforcement officer qualified under Washington law, or by a prosecuting attorney. Unless tribal police have law enforcement commissions from the county sheriff, they cannot initiate the traffic prosecution.
However, tribal police are certainly authorize to detain and investigate non-Indians suspected of violating the law on reservation lands. The information obtained can then be forwarded to a deputy sheriff or prosecuting attorney, for a traffic ticket to be issued against the motorist in state court.
Posted by: Richard Pope on August 14, 2008 07:34 PMI believe that Fred Walser has the better point in this particular debate, and that he is not "lying" about this
Coming from you, that actually makes me look good, Richard Pope.
It is simply indisputable that the implication in the piece is that Stevens was speaking about ALL residents and ALL police. It is also indisputable that she was NOT doing that.
And it is further indisputable that nothing you wrote in your comment has anything to do with the lie that Fred Walser told, that I was referring to.
You're talking about the validity of what Stevens actually said, which is a legitimate discussion to have (though I think you're wrong in your analysis, and don't care to discuss it further right now, as I have more important things to do ... some other time, maybe).
But Fred Walser was not saying what Stevens actually said is wrong, Fred Walser was LYING about what she actually said, saying that she said something she clearly never, ever, said.
You seem incapable of separating fact from fiction and lies from truth. You appear to be infested with moral relativism and it seems to have infected the very core of your being.
This mailer is an out and out lie. No amount of spin can change that.
That you don't seem to be able to grasp that simple fact... that you seem to have appointed yourself as Walser's chief apologist... well, that speaks volumes about you, and not in a positive way.
Posted by: Hinton on August 14, 2008 08:37 PMRemeber that joke about lawyers/lies and moving lips. LOL
Richard give it up.
Go over to HA where they will buy your lies and say how smart you are, cause it ain't working here.
Posted by: Army Medic/Vet on August 15, 2008 09:04 AMWalser would tell you he is this upstanding guy who never lies and has nothing to hide......now that would be a lie! He apparently thinks lying is no big deal. It certainly seems to be a personal habit. It appears from all I've read and seen about Mr. Walser, he has an attitude of "it's what you can get away with". He has no boundaries because in his mind he's the man in charge...the man who "used" to wear the star.
Be sure to read between the lines on this guy before you cast your vote for Senator. It just might be one of the more important votes you cast!

Please tell us again why the Washington State Bar rated you as "not qualified". Oh and do those two women still have restraining orders against you?
Posted by: Curious on August 15, 2008 12:00 PMI'm sick of Val not helping the 39th, and of being stuck in traffic on highway 9 till the end of her district.
Posted by: Grendel on August 15, 2008 09:25 PMI am not even going to begin to address your "point" because it is perfectly obvious you are just trying to draw away attention from the fact that Walser is a serial, convicted, liar.
Walser cannot be trusted. Based on his history, he WILL lie to make more money, he WILL lie to cover up crimes by himself and his friends, he WILL disregard the rights of citizens, he WILL try to frame public servants for crimes, he WILL try to convince other people to commit crimes, he WILL cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars (probably more at the stave level) for his misdeeds.
How do we know he WILL do those things? Because he has already done them.
Maybe in your "interconnected" world you don't see those things as terrible character flaws that disqualify Walser from serving in public office. I, and most citizens, do.
Signed,
Beowulf
I do care about issues that effect me, and Val's inability to bring anything to the 39th has me ready to vote to get her out.

Of course, again, the real point is simply that you dislike Val Stevens and/or Republicans. That is all that really matters to you. You may or may not care about Highway 9, but that is not what is motivating you here. You're not fooling anyone.
I am suspect of your accusations of Walser as you have made accusations towards me without even knowing me. You accused me of disliking Republicans which is no more than a guess on your part.
Locally I support Kirk Pearson, Sam Reed and Dino Rossi. I also support Peter Goldmark, Jim McIntire, and Mike Kriedler. I havn't decided between Scott Olson and Dan Kristiansen yet. I'll be voting Bob Barr in the Presidential election.
I have voted about evenly between Republicans and Democrats in past election cycles.
I don't dislike Republicans any more than I dislike Democrats, I'm simply unhappy with the incumbent Senator for my legislative district.
For you to extrapolate this as an attack on all Republicans shows a small minded blind loyalty to your political party no matter how bad the candidate. It also gets in the way of civil discourse.
That is why I am informing people. He WANTS you to not know him.
I am suspect of your accusations of Walser...
That is why I linked the web site to original, authoritative, documents for every single claim I make. Which claim do you have an issue with? I'll show you exactly where it comes from.
I link to the sentencing papers where Walser received his one-year jail sentence.
I link to the Everett P.D. report which shows that he told a subordinate to file false overtime hours (and then lied about it, before later admitting it); that he printed up a new false log the same day he was given a log by Snohomish County Sheriff's Department proving his subordinate, Caroline Pepperell, had abused police resources ("ACCESS") to violate a citizen's privacy; that he knew, when he hired her, that Pepperell had a history of abusing ACCESS to violate citizens' privacy; that he disobeyed a direct order from the mayor to take Pepperell off ACCESS pending investigation; that he filed a false sexual harassment report against Pepperell's proposed replacement; that he tried to convince Sheriff Bart to violate public records law.
There's plenty of news stories out there about Walser covering up an accident with Pat Slack's son, while Walser was an officer for the Washington State Patrol.
And of course, I quite clearly proved he was lying in his mailer against Val Stevens.
The only way you could be suspect of any of these things, at this point, is if you didn't care. The facts are all clear, and uncontested.
... as you have made accusations towards me without even knowing me
That is not accurate. You were skeptical of the facts presented about Walser before I said anything about you.
For you to extrapolate this as an attack on all Republicans shows a small minded blind loyalty to your political party no matter how bad the candidate
Nonsense. You came in here saying that you DO NOT CARE that Fred Walser has done all the things mentioned, and that you are voting against Val Stevens for something the DEMOCRATS are responsible for: lack of congestion relief (and on that note, I drive through 9 all the time, and it is extremely rare that I ever encounter serious congestion on the two-lane portion of 9, except when there's construction, so I don't even believe that anyone thinks this is a serious problem anyway).
Perhaps my criticism was misapplied -- I have my doubts, but whatever -- but you still said something entirely nonsensical: that what Fred has done (completely betray the public trust, over and over and over, for years) is unimportant, but that four lanes on 9 is of ultimate importance.
Posted by: pudge on August 16, 2008 09:15 AMPlease take a closer look at the candidate, Walser and his past. He is more than just a person who lies. He manipulates situations to HIS or HIS friends advantage with no concern for what it does to others or the entity he oversees. Think about the damage he causes to the people he affects by his selfish decisions to manipulate situations. His psst shouts he's a guy who likes the power to control things. He has not proven himself to be a well thought out, intelligent, respected man.
You say you don't care if he lies.....so how will you or the 39th LD know to trust his proposals and decisions. A person who has a pattern of deceitfulness is not true to anyone. Shouldn't we strive to vote in honest, forthcoming people for public offices. Politicians (Dem or Republican) will never become accountable if we the VOTERS don't put our foot down and stop the madness.
I understand the Hwy 9 congestion and the long waits....it is difficult to endure especially once school starts up. We have many roads in the area needing attention and the construction on the other highways draws traffic to other highways. It would make sense only so much can be done with the availability of road money given all the roads we have in this area and most likely the people in charge try to spread the wealth. Highway 522 known as the Highway of Death has been a focus and most likely a costly one given the overpasses and bridge. This project is still not completed. It goes from 4 to 2 lanes just before the bridge. Long waits for many travelers on this highway just like Highway 9. I think money is an issue. If we're being honest, Highway 9 is not the only hot issue for the 39th Distict to deal with. Val Stevens is really a good person and open for suggestions/comments. She will do her best to bring discussion and resolve a multitude of HOT issues for her district. She can't do it all. It is important for citizens to write letters/emails informing their legistators about their concerns so the legislator has documentation to show when they go rally for those hot issues. Most of us citizens tend to sit back and complain but never take any action. Our inaction doesn't help us make things better. We need to become more informed and vote responsibly for qualified and honest candidates to make change become a reality.
I hope you reconsider your position when you go to vote. Please read up before you vote.
Valentina
Posted by: Valentina Heart of a Lion on August 16, 2008 10:40 AMThanks for your thoughtful reply. I came to this board to for respectful discussion, only to be attacked by this pudge fellow (who has obviously never tried to get across the Snohomish river on highway 9 during rush hour.)
I appreciate your perspective and your arguments, and will consider them before I vote.
