That Sound You Heard...

...earlier this evening may have been my jubilant screaming after watching the greatest swimming race I have ever seen. That's the kind of excitement that makes the Olympics truly special.

I wasn't the only one excited...for good cause.

Wow.

1. I hope you are watching it on CBC, because NBC is scrwing us folks out west with their tape delay.

NBC's coverage is an embarrasment. CBC has better coverage, and it is live.

Great race, BTW. I hope the folks out west without CBC scream real loud at NBC and its sponsors tomorrow. I plan on calling KING to complain.

2. I can hardly stop watching that race over and over, plus the reaction from Phelps and his teammates was absolutely priceless. Thank goodness for Tivo, I can just watch Phelps look up at the clock and scream at the top of his lungs over and over...

I know President Bush watching in the stands sure had to love it! Well done, guys, well done!

3. ..and I LOVED Bob Costas' reply to french swimmer Bernard's trash talk "We're going to smash the americans": "Au contraire, mon ami."

4. Oh my goodness, aren't we all excited? And the "good cause " was...
Sounds a wee bit like the greater good theory.
Get off of observing and participate.

5. Well, speaking for myself... I failed to make the cut for the Olympic Team; and frankly, the idea of vacationing in a country that imprisons protesters turns my stomach... But it wasn't for lack of trying. They just weren't taking sea turtles this time around.

6. Lezak's anchor race was the best I've ever seen. The announcers were even saying mid way through the last 50 that the US would be settling for the silver. Then he sprinted ahead of the French swimmer. Amazing.

7. Even with my almost total lack of interest in sports, I got a bit caught up watching our guys wipe the floor with the Chicom basketball team. I am somewhat confused though. My impression was that the Olympics were for amateur athletes only, so I was surprised to see NBA pro players competing. I guess someone owes Jim Thorpe an apology. Since the Chicoms are only ranked 8th, I think it is going to get a lot tougher for our guys. Maybe they can put Dennis Rodman in long enough to get a speed bag workout on the other team's testicles. That ought to get them an advantage.

Wow and what about those Chinese "women" gymnasts? I wonder what age the Chinese consider their females to be women, because NONE of those "women" looked to be more that 10 years old. By comparison, our women looked to be, on average, at least 40 years old.

Our guys beating the French in their own natural habitat is FANTASTIC. I just hope we don't have to see Phelps hawking Speedos on TV every five minutes for the next 12 years though.

: )

8. so I was surprised to see NBA pro players competing.

Um, NBA players have been competing since 1992. You know, the Dream Team?

9. What I saw President Bush disrespecting our troops by taking an extended joyful vacation while our troops are fighting in not one but wars abroad. He should be running the country and not hanging out watching sport that can be shown on TV in the White House.

Personally, I never imagined a day would come when I would see such a blatant disregard to the sacrifices our boys in uniform by a Republican President. Shame on him.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 09:28 AM
10. Yeah that was pretty incredible. Based on your enthusiasm Eric, I have been watching the swimming even though I am more in to the LD running and cycling. It has been awesome. Uncool when China cut off the anthem after Phelps' first Gold.

Maybe I will do a tri someday soon.

Posted by: Jeff B. on August 11, 2008 09:33 AM
11. Old Fogey, I take it you've suspended all of your vacations until the war ends, out of respect for the troops.

12. I always feel sorry for the grumps that refuse to watch, (and enjoy), the Olympics.

13. NWD @7,
Yeah, those are 16 year olds?? What calendar are they using over there?

Posted by: PC on August 11, 2008 10:07 AM
14. @11
Don't mock me, I support the troops wholeheartedly and donate money to multiple veterans charity's. The President claimed he gave up Golf for the troops, he should also give up his fancy Commie vacation and get back to what I elected him to do, run the country. It's a disgrace to see our troops fighting two wars,m and another war starting in Russia/Georgia. What's the President doing, he's sitting in the stands cheering on our athletes and not managing the country he was elected to lead.

While I'm proud of this country as much as the next man but the President is different, he is the supreme elected official, and leader of this country. I know for certain he has more important things to do. Shame on the President.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 11:07 AM
15. I'll mock you SOB, Let's see, our President was sitting immediately next to V. Putin at the Olympics discussing the situation in Georgia with Putin himself while the fighting started. You're an Old Fogey, alright, a miserably stupid A$$ SOB who can't even realize that the President might be doing more for his country over there than over here.

Let's see, he's the GDMNED President of the U.S., the one country that symbolizes FREEDOM and LIBERTY in the whole world and he is inside one of the most oppressive, non-free countries in the world - acting as an ambassador for freedom and democracy at a time when China, itself, needs just some nudging to turn more and more democratic, with the Chinese crowds cheering loudly for the free American athletes. Let's see, yes, he should be over there.

Posted by: doug on August 11, 2008 11:16 AM
16. @15 -
I did not see him sitting next to Putin. Odds are that Putin is a classic old-style Russian commie, he sure acts like one. President Bush at the opening ceremonies I can understand, but it seems the more he stays the more insulting it is to me and my fellow Americans who elected him to do his job. Our troops will look and see the President joshing out with the US Softball team rather than doing his job. I fail to see what good visiting Beach Volleyball players in bikinis does for the continuing greatness of country.

He is the President, the leader of the free world, even if he is in a Commie country he needs to get his act together, get back home, and focus on continuing our freedoms and LEADING THE COUNTRY like I elected him to do. China ain't going go non-commie overnight, Bush visiting is not going to change a darn thing. Chinese crowds will be cheering whether Bush is there or not, meanwhile our troops are risking/sacrificing their lives everyday. You tell me which is more important. You and the President should get your priorities straight.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 11:52 AM
17. My approach to the commie gymnast age-cheating is to NOT watch that part. When it came up, I just fast-forwarded Tivo right past. I'll watch any other womens gymnastic team compete, but if the chi-coms are going to cheat, then they are not worth my viewing time and I don't watch their team compete.

Posted by: Michele on August 11, 2008 12:09 PM
18. I always just try to cheer to encourage them along but that race was off the hook. I could not believe the tenacity of Jason Lezak (the anchor leg of the relay); he was a man possessed. And the playback shows that the French guy next to him peeked over when they were almost at the wall. That look might have cost them the gold given the closeness of the race.

I always want the best person(s) to win and these American guys dug down and won it. (It's also great to see an African-American on the team. If you watched the men's gymnastics, we've got a Russian-American and a Chinese-American on our team. I'm proud of our American teams looking so diverse.)

The ugly of this Olympics? The gymnastics judging is really hard to decipher (and in one case the commentators both agreed that one American girl got robbed in the preliminaries for balance beam). There is just no real reason that the Chinese should be scoring as high as they are. That plus the ridiculousness of saying that all those girls on the Chinese team are 15 going on 16 (you have to turn 16 in the calendar year of the Olympics) is complete nonsense. The girls know it, their parents know it, the coaches know it but worst of all their country's government knows. Do away with the age limit if need be but if it's a rule, then countries should abide by it.

Also, the PI said today that Chinese athletes cannot get married before 26 (women) and 28 (men). Yikes.

20. You must be pretty old Fogey, because in this age of telecommunications, the President can respond to anything from anywhere. So even at the Olympics he can still "run the country" or do whatever it is that you think he should be doing. So go ahead and lose the BDS and cheer for the U.S.A.

Posted by: Palouse on August 11, 2008 12:22 PM
21. Do away with the age limit if need be but if it's a rule, then countries should abide by it.

Germany has a 32-year old gymnast. Whoop de do. Age limits be dammed, let's just let the top contenders compete and may the best athletes win. I swear, people on SP whine about the stupidest things.

Posted by: Cato on August 11, 2008 12:28 PM
22. The Olympics are on? Yawn. There's not a single event in the summer games I would make time to watch. Most events in the winter games have some combination of speed and danger that appeals a lot more to this former skydiver.

Old Fogey, you just prove that there's no fool like an old one.

Posted by: deedub on August 11, 2008 12:33 PM
23. deedub: Speed and danger are cool but talk about danger--those gymnasts do ridiculous things and break bones right and left and I can hardly believe the stream of injuries they endure to do the crazy things they do. check it out :-)

24. @20:
I may be old, but I know that a real President leads from the White House and does not sit around taking extended vacations in Communist run countries. Heck, if Bill Clinton had done the same thing I would be calling for his resignation. It's a disgrace that Sen. McCain is more deeply involved in world affairs than our own sitting President. I know that Pres. McCain would be working hard for the people who elected him and running the country. He would not be getting chummy and posing for photo-ops with skimpily clad Olympic athletes.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 02:47 PM
25. a real President leads from the White House and does not sit around taking extended vacations in Communist run countries.

So who was the last "real President" then? Because all Presidents take vacations, and many of them have also attended the Olympics. Get over it. There's nothing wrong in attending the Olympics as a representative of our nation, and the free world. I'm done with this non-issue.

Posted by: Palouse on August 11, 2008 03:21 PM
26. Fogey, you are entitled to your opinions. But perhaps the better question is--What was Putin doing there laughing it up at the opening ceremonies while his country was busy mowing down Georgia?

Posted by: Michele on August 11, 2008 03:40 PM
27. Fogey, may be old, but I know that a real President leads from the White House and does not sit around taking extended vacations in Communist run countries. Heck, if Bill Clinton had done the same thing I would be calling for his resignation.

Then I am sure that after Clinton spent 10 days touring China in 1998, you must have been yelling loudly for his resignation.

Posted by: Doug on August 11, 2008 03:49 PM
28. Fogey must have missed the President's interview with Bob Costas where the Mr. Bush gave details of conversations he had with Chinese leaders. He scalded the Chicoms on human rights, religious freedom and numerous other issues. That, coupled with the face-to-face opportunity to critique Putin's military aggression in Georgia sounds like a full day to me. Better ask the bedpan nurse for a double dose of those dementia meds tomorrow, Fogey.

29. @25

Ronald Reagan went an opened the '84 Olympics because they were on US soil and his home state. It did not signify a two week vacation for him. He was right back at work the very next day. Bill Clinton opened the Olympics in Atlanta, of course we were bombed bombed by terrorists during that one because Clinton was weak on security. Though even Clinton did not take a vacation, he was at the White House the day the bombing occurred. Can't say the same for Bush when an American is stabbed to death by the commies. I elected Bush as president to serve and lead, not get chummy with olympic athletes on commie soil.

@26
Putin runs his own country, I thankfully don't live in his fake "capitalist" country. Putin is an overzealous commie wannabe if you ask me and I agree with McCain, he should not be trusted.

@27
I did not vote for Clinton not did anyone I care to know. Needless to say I wanted Pres. Clinton to resign after his looney socialist loving wife tried to impose her leftist commie health care system on me. I'm still deeply disappointed that my party could not pull their heads out of their asses and impeach the man and his god awful wife.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 05:06 PM
30. @28
I'm sure he did, but he also took lots of time to get chummy with the US Athletes and catch a couple of events when he should be at the White House leading the country, encouraging democracy, and backing up the Georgian's. It's sad that Sen. McCain has a stronger stance on encouraging Democracy than the leader of the free world. The President should get his priorities straight.

Putin is a not to be trusted, I seem to recall he's not even the President anymore, he's just the prime minister. Either way it's not doing a lot of good, sending military (or at least air) support for the true democracy loving Georgian's would be a much better option and send a much stronger message.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 11, 2008 05:16 PM
31. Fogey,

The pres needs to be a leader and manager. He has people to manage the war. He doesn't need to sit in the Oval Office with his sleeves rolled up like a movie actor.

He also has a need to focus on the economy, foreign policy, human rights, etc. That's what he was doing.

Vacationing....are you serious?

Posted by: Chris on August 11, 2008 09:33 PM
32. Michelle @ 23, no question you are right. I'm not denigrating the sports or atheletes. Just not my thing.

Fogey, man what rock have you been living under? Whether it's Bush or Clinton or any other president in the last 100 years, his lightest vacation day he probably works harder than you ever did on the longest work day of your life. I'm not accusing you of not working hard, but being president is a 24/7/365 job. Being the President on vacation just means doing your full time job somewhere else.

Any president that hunkers down in the White House for the duration of his term would be in dereliction of duty. The President is in charge of foreign policy and has to travel as part of his job. To say that McCain is more involved in world affairs than Bush or any other president is monumentally ignorant.

As to posing with the scantily clad women, are you implying that there should be NO perks to being president? You're just not a fun guy, are you? The only person who has any business being upset about that is Laura. But if she is, we will never know. Unlike some folks, the Bushes have far too much class to air their dirty laundry in public.

Posted by: deedub on August 11, 2008 10:36 PM
33. hey fogey, W can do more from any location (Boeing calls it "virtual") than the House of Reps can do from their 5 week vacation. Why not aim those rants at Pelosi to pass a bill on drilling that W needs to come back to DC and sign. Hmmm?

Posted by: PC on August 11, 2008 11:13 PM
34. I agree with McCain and Old Fogey---Putin the KGB man CANNOT be trusted.

Posted by: Michele on August 12, 2008 01:08 AM
35. Fogey,

"I'm still deeply disappointed that my party could not pull their heads out of their asses and impeach the man and his god awful wife."

Huh? I must be missing something here. The way I remember it is that Clinton WAS impeached. He kept his office largely through partisan politics. Not a single democrat voted to throw his worthless butt out.

You say you voted for Bush. Good, now maybe you might want to SUPPORT him instead of complaining about a non issue. He has the job and you don't.

If you just want to complain, try going over to Horsesass or KOS. You will get plenty of sympathy over there.

Posted by: NW Denizen on August 12, 2008 07:16 AM
36. @35
Clearly he was still in office and served out his term, therefore he was not impeached.

I do support the man when he's not yucking it up with Olympians in the middle of two wars. We live in a post-9/11 world, that means the threat of terrorism and post-cold war flare ups are even more dangerous. Bush should be working not playing grabass during photo ops with scantily clad volleyball players. It's disgusting and inconsiderate to our troops overseas who are putting their lives on the line everyday.

The fact that Russia has pretty much conquered Georgia while Bush is sitting next to Putin shows how disrespectful the little commie scum is. Bush needs to look like he's leading, not looking like he's on vacation. Clearly he's doing the later.

Heck, I look forward to Pres. McCain because he'll actually do his the job he's elected to do and not putz around the Olympics looking like a damned fool on vacation.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 12, 2008 10:37 AM
37. Fogey, Clinton WAS impeached on December 19, 1998. That is a fact. I'm beginning to think you are not an OLD fogey but infact a non-educated college age student since you obviously do not know a very simple little thing like what it means to be impeached (of which Clinton was) and found not-guilty of the charges (of which Clinton was as well). Therefore, Clinton WAS impeached, but found not-guilty of the charges in the impeachment.

I'm puzzled that you would be one that would have thought our President would look stronger if during the Opening Ceremonies he had to tell the big bad Putin that he needs to skip the Olympics and go running home to momma (I assume that what you would consider Washington DC) so that he can figure out how to counter Putin. Now, that would have been weak. Instead he stayed there in a show of strength, "Hey, Putin, check this out, my country is a true democracy and we don't need a commander-in-chief slapping every mosquito that bites at our ankles."

Posted by: Doug on August 12, 2008 10:51 AM
38. @37
That's not waht I'm saying at all. Opening ceremonies was a sign of respect to the Chinese, one of our largest trading partners. He was stting next to Putin, the ruskie bastard didn't listen to our President and kept on invading. We need the President back at the White House defending the democracy loving Georgian's and supporting our troops by leading OUR country. Posing for photo-ops with scantily clad athletes and sitting around at watching sporting events on commie soil. This is NOT what I elected President Bush to do.

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 12, 2008 11:42 AM
39. "Posing for photo-ops with scantily clad athletes..."

LOL. What with your incessant caterwauling about this, I am beginning to this you are just JEALOUS. Bwahahahahah!

Posted by: NW Denizen on August 12, 2008 12:15 PM
40. @39
It's morally disgusting. He is the leader of the free world, he should not be playing the Boris Yeltsin clone looking like a drunken monkeyboy with these women. It's an insult to myself, the country, and our troops abroad.

We are in a state of war, he should be spending more governing our troops and keeping abreast of the Georgia situation. He in his role as President should be helping this freedom loving country of Georgia with supplies and at very least air support. In a time of war our President should not sitting around lazily watching sporting events. Shame on him!

Posted by: Old Fogey on August 12, 2008 02:35 PM
41. "It's morally disgusting."

Oh, so I was right. You are jealous. Well Fogey, you know what they say..."Just because you're too old to cut the mustard, doesn't mean that you can't lick the lid." LOL

Posted by: NW Denizen on August 12, 2008 03:28 PM
42. @41
It is morally disgusting, it's like the watching President participating in the Janet Jackson half-time show. I've seen prostitutes in Seattle wearing more clothes than that, not the sort of people I want to see my hard earned tax dollars spent wisely. They should not be used in fashion that allows the President can hang out with nearly naked women athletes and playing grab-ass with them on commie soil.

He should be at the White House leading the country and supporting out troops in a time of war. I know that President McCain will show much more sensibility and moral fortitude if/when he decides to go to the 2012 Olympic Games.
