It was nice of the PDC to enter the modern era of web accessibility; their redesigned site does that in spades.
The Search the Database function is now actually highly useful, providing assorted summaries and full breakdowns where they often either didn't exist or had to be compiled using multiple reports.
Some nuggets worth mentioning:
1) The Governor's race is indeed a barn burner. Christine Gregoire has raised $8.1 million to Dino Rossi's $6.3 million. She leads in cash-on-hand with $5.7 million to his $4.6 million. Of note, she has received $850,000 from the State Democrats (which of course is now a much discussed issue), he only $40,000 thus far from the state GOP. There's your special interest funded campaign versus grassroots donor support in a nutshell.
2) Independent expenditures are indeed coming close to canceling each other out in the Governor's race, and not just in political impact. $1.3 million in spending against Gregoire coupled with $200,000 in support of Rossi about matches the $1.5 million spent by Evergreen Progress against him. Caveat: the Democratic Governors Association just pumped another $750,000 into Evergreen Progress's war chest, meaning the DGA has put a cool $1 mill into this PAC effort alone...an amazing level of spending in July not seen in the Evergreen State since Maria Cantwell opened up her personal checkbook in the 2000 Senate race.
3) Rob McKenna has a nice early lead over John Ladenburg, with a 3.5 to 1 cash-on-hand advantage (approximately $637,000 for the former to $180,000 for the latter).
4) The Lands Commissioner is going to be another war, just like last time. Peter Goldmark - who whatever his lack of success as a Congressional candidate was a very solid fundraiser in 2006 - leads incumbent Doug Sutherland in cash-on-hand by a modest margin of $344,000 to $310,000.
Posted by Eric Earling at July 27, 2008 09:42 PM | Email ThisIt's an interactive map of donations using data from the PDC. Click on the AG race under "Positions" and see the total contributions, and see where the money is coming from (by city), and click on a city and get a link to the PDC web site to view all the contributions from that city.
It's fun! I have more to do. There's some bugs, and there's better ways to do things. But it's a start. Of what, I do not know.

Created by renegades from Google.
It does a better job of tracking my various comments to Sound Politics than Google does.
Unfortunately.
ALMOST makes me want to use a chicken hearted pseudonym. But not quite. The better solution is to always check my thoughts, spelling and facts.
Posted by: bart cannon on July 28, 2008 06:36 AMBTW, you make find posts.
How about a readable synopsis of how to use the PDC? How can I get what the tribes are putting out there? How about the independent groups? How can I read multiple C-3s without having to reload several times?
Posted by: swatter on July 28, 2008 07:30 AMI have noticed that many of the people who use their real names might well have some kind of political aspirations for which notoriety would be useful.
I can assure you that I have NO political ambitions nor much concerted ambition of any kind.
I just want to know who I'm writing to and I'm making a gesture to prove I support the concept.
I will admit that since I'm self-employed, childless and single, I have more liberty to do so than many on this blog.
Posted by: bart cannon on July 28, 2008 02:18 PMI looked for my local, corrupt political group and found their yearly reporting. I know they gave more, but I couldn't find it.
I suppose now I'll have to locate my local corrupt politician and check his and her contributions to get where the local, corrupt political group is handing out the bribes.
