About those sagging pants

The P-I runs a wire story on its website about new laws against sagging pants. On this topic, it must be noted that recent coverage in the Detroit Free Press of similar municipal efforts resulted in one of the great newspaper graphics of our era:

2. Good. Ghetto culture needs to be shown as the obvious failure that it is. Wearing one's pants so low that one can't move quickly, is dysfunctional. There are several great stories on the www about ghetto guys wearing the baggy look, and then trying to run from the police.

3. Who wants to look at someone's bee-hind, anyway? Isn't the sagging pants thing code in jail for "I'm available for...whatever?"

4. This is discriminatory against plumbers.

First Obama wants them to ride bicycles and public transit to come fix your leaking pipes- now they're going after panty lines.

Leave my coin slot alone.

5. About time. These attention seeking punks need to be sent a message that 'normal' people don't need to be exposed (quite literally) to their delinquent dress habits. I'd fine what passes as their parent's as well so that it's crytal clear that this is not acceptable in public areas.

6. I scrolled down very fast this morning, the first thing I thought of when I saw the pictures was the affect of government reaching into our pockets for more taxes. Silly me.

7. While I agree with the intent of this law to curb gang-related behavior, sagging pants is not indecent. So I would oppose such a law for the general public. However, I would fully support it in schools, where the same rules do not apply.

8. Mammy nannies your panties... (get over it, it's not a slur, it RHYMES!)

9. I contend the level of the pants has a direct correlation to the level of intellect and ambition of the wearer. The lower the belt-line, the lower the brainpower, education and desire to work to support oneself. For some reason, street culture seems to glamorize ignorance and indolence. But I guess that's why most inner-city types vote Dimocrat.....knowing tax-and-spend Dims will re-pay inner-city votes with social programs to feed, clothe and house the ignorant and the lazy.

10. I think it's stupid as well, but is a law seriously needed? Ugh

11. Slathering at 9, I agree with you 100%. I have told my nieces and nephews that all people want attention, it's normal to want attention. The trick is to get that attention for doing something (of value) well instead of doing something wierd. That does take effort though.

12. It has amazed me how long this fad has lasted. I recall first seeing them in the early to mid '80s, and twenty some years later, the sagging pants are still with us.

13. Just what we need, more laws. Besides, this one clearly only applies to the Blue Man Group.

Posted by: cadrys on July 21, 2008 09:31 AM
14. While some may welcome this law, I ask: Where does it stop?

If people want to dress like freakin' idiots, let 'em. The last thing we need is government telling us how and what we can wear.

Again, if that's the case where does it stop?

15. As an "oldster" I remember, as a kid, in the 50's the old rhyme, "I see London, I see France. I see 'so and so's' underpants. The gangster look does look stupid and I agree that it mirrors the wearer's intellect. I also recall the same was thought about men who had many of their shirt buttoms unbuttoned. Sadly, a law won't correct the academically challenged.

16. From the article:
The American Civil Liberties Union says the ordinance targets young men of color.

And just what is the ACLU implying? A racial stereotype? Say it ain't so!

Ugh. In the greater Seattle area, I see miscreants of all stripes having problems keeping their drawers up. The lower the pants, the lower the IQ it seems.

17. When I first saw that graphic on another site, I seriously thought it was from The Onion.

18. Passing a law will not stop this problem.

It just makes the law look stupid.

It erodes respect for the rule of law when dumb laws like this are on the books.

I'm sure the politician who championed this stupid legislation will use it around re-election time to show he or she did something about the problem, even if the net result of the law is negative.

But that's the way the government works.

19. I always dreamed of shooting a poison dart at
those lazy "bums". It's almost as retarded as
a man wearing an earring.

20. How you dress is pure advertising of how you think. I guess this way we know a donkey before seeing the front side.
However, this fashion is a strong case for females being a bit smarter than males. Thankfully guys don't wear 'daisy dukes'.

21. They don't know how to where pants properly because of poor publik edukation. Besides, they most likely don't know how to where their hats either. Usually, you see them wearing them backwards. They need to be marked "front". Hopefully, they can read a little.

22. First they came for my baggie bags.

Then they came for my bottles.

Then they came for my bonfires.

Then they came for my basketball.

Then they came for my ass-crack pants.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!
