An Interesting Governor's Race Nugget

Jerry Cornfield reports on a Democratic poll in the 44th Legislative District showing Dino Rossi leading Christine Gregoire by seven points.

The 44th is a perfect symbol of Democratic ascendancy in recent electoral cycles. By virtue of demographics, this suburban/exurban district should tilt slightly Republican or be a regular toss-up. Instead, like other suburban districts across the Puget Sound area, Democrats have developed a hammerlock on all three of the district's slots in Olympia.

Yet, the poll found Rossi ahead, even as Barack Obama and the Democratic House candidate held leads with the voters surveyed.

Thus, in one suburban slice the unique depth of Dino Rossi's appeal is on display. It's why he has a fighting chance this year in a tough state for Republicans.

1. I fail to see how anyone could vote for the Queen upon observing her miserable performance these past 3.5 years.

2. I'm sure you have heard the TV commercial that begins "What do you know about Dino Rossi?" I got so sick of hearing and seeing it I wrote a letter to the editor of The Olympian. Been couple of weeks and I haven't heard from them yet, and probably won't. My letter read: What do I know about Dino Rossi? I know I'm going to vote for him!

3. Beyond her performance, which I think is incompetent at best, electability is so often how a person carries themselves. I can see Rossi carrying toss-up jurisdictions just on his CEO quality demeanor. He just simply acts like he can run the state and run it well. Gregoire's demeanor has a real edge to it and looks like a person that is having problems running things and that isn't very confidence inspiring to a fence sitter. And let's face it, Rossi and Ms. G are fighting over the fence sitters. Everybody else is committed one way or the other.
