Debut on the Main Page & McIver on Public Financing of Campaigns

I have a blog called clearfogblog postings from which you may have seen on the Sound Politics Public Blog. I will continue my blog but will be cross posting to the Sound Politics Main Page from time to time. You may read more about me on clearfogblog about but briefly I graduated from Penn (the University of not the place with bars on the windows), spent three plus years in the Navy and worked in Finance at Boeing for 34 years during which time I served one term in the State House of Representatives (1975-1976). I look forward to your comments.

Seattle and Public Financing of Campaigns
Posted by Warren Peterson on July 9, 2008 on clearfogblog

I sent my post on public financing of campaigns to members of the King County and Seattle City councils. I received a few responses one of which is below.

Mr. Peterson,

I received your email with the links to your blog, in which you discuss
County Councilmember Bob Ferguson's support for public campaign
financing. I haven't decided where I stand on the issue, but I think
you have most definitely raised concerns I think shared by many,
questioning why should taxpayers foot the bill for the self promotion of
candidates.

In the case of King County, its projected 2009 budget shortfall in
excess of $60 million, with the likelihood of sheriff deputy layoffs,
makes it hard to see where the funds for campaign financing might be
found. It seems clear they have a systemic budget problem, not simply
an economic downturn, so their budget shortfalls are likely to persist.

The City of Seattle is also facing a likely budget shortfall this
coming year, although not nearly so bad. In addition, it is unlikely a
measure for the public financing of municipal elections will be sent to
voters this fall. I wouldn't be surprised if Seattle voters approve
such a measure which I think will be placed on the 2009 ballot However,
I think we need to have a much deeper discussion of what problems we are
trying to solve with public financing, and whether such a system would
answer those problems. As of yet, I'm not convinced, although I most
definitely think campaigns are becoming disturbingly expensive.

Richard J. McIver
Seattle City Council

At least one member of the City Council seems to have his head screwed on right, on this issue at least.

1. Warren,

Glad that you're on board!!!

2. Welcome. I was on board from the beginning. But this morning I made my first post in many months.

The issues you raise are pertinent. My problem with public financing is more fundamental. It is a route to one-party rule. Who makes the decisions about who is qualified for the public trough - not the easy cases, but the liners? The party in power. So this will tend to perpetuate their power.

3. We are gonna have one party rule anyway Ron. The number of people ignorant enough to believe the lies of Republiconvicts is shrinking faster than the polar ice caps.

The Democratic Party's membership is exploding, and the GOP is dying. All because of one president that thought he was a dictator, and all the criminals that supported, or still support his administration.

Just wait till the prosecutions begin.....

4. Welcome Warren. I hope you can keep this positive. It's awfully drears around here usually. Republicans will never win anything anytime soon in this state if they keep running against Seattle, (even when they themselves live there!)and are always so negative and sarcastic. I remember when The GOP were the optimists.

5. Oh I see someone let the children in. Yeah, apparently the liberals are counting on people being ignorant enough to swallow the lies about where our $8 billion dollars in state money went and how a billion dollar surplus was turned into a $2.7 billion deficit within 4 years.

Sorry No Facts, but even my died in the wool liberal relatives are against Gregoire. Busting our budget to give million dollar grants to tribal casinos like the Clearwater, is just too much kool-aid even for them.
