John McCain: Tough guy?

You know, just when I was about to talk myself out of voting for Sen. John McCain, the Drudge Report links to a Mississippi newspaper article about the man's temper.

GOP Senator says McCain roughed up Nicaraguan.

Apparently back in 1987, the freshly minted Arizona senator got involved in a physical altercation with one of Daniel Ortega's Sandanista henchmen during a diplomatic reception.

According to Mississippi Republican Thad Cochran...

"I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever."

No doubt McCain couldn't stomach being in the same room with a member of a communist-backed regime that was responsible for cold-bloodedly butchering thousands of its own citizens.

Could a Chuck Norris endorsement be in the near future?

The fact that McCain has/had a tendency to go all Robert Mitchum in a film noir movie by roughing up communists for some reason doesn't seem that troublesome. At least not when the only other choice is some limp-wristed metrosexual that the Democrats put on top of their ticket this election season. The least that the D's could have done for America was nominate a real man like Hillary.

Matt Drudge, who it has been reported is no fan of the the Arizona senator, probably chose to link to the Sun Herald article in order to discredit the man. But stories like this shouldn't hurt McCain when it comes to the average voter.

Americans like tough guys and abhor wimps.

If the presumptive GOP nominee wants to win in November he has to recapture the gruff, straight-talking, no-nonsense Maverick image he cultivated prior to the 2000 election. The milquetoast stuff about having a respectful debate with Obama has gotta stop.

Maybe by shaking loose some of the faux GOP douchebags from his election team, as has been reported, will add a little backbone the faltering campaign.

And if he cold-cocks Chris Matthews the next time he gives McCain lip during an interview, so much the better...

1. Could someone get McCain's testicles out of the pickle jar so he could respond to Wesley Clark?

For God's sake man, grow a pair.

2. I like a guy who can kick some commie bee-hind when necessary. Comparing a McCain administration with an Obama administration---Obama would be a complete disaster for taxpayers, those who care about national security, and judicial appointments. Those are my big three issues of interest at this time, and Obama would be horrible on all of them. I'm SO voting for McCain.

3. Every time I want to talk myself out of McCain, I force myself to remember Obama and how disastrous his administration would be, and then I snap back to reality and become a McCain "supporter".

Don...can you stop writing such funny posts? I always happen to read them late at night, and then I chuckle, snort, and wake or startle someone. Congratulations.

I'm pretty sure Drudge was a Romney-bot. I think he needs to get over that.

4. Kind of makes him the anti-Harry Reid. Can you imagine anyone being physically afraid of that afeminate, completely un-manly shell of a male human being? I for one, am heartened that we may possibly have a real man running for President, at least on one side. Maybe a little primal instinct is what we need before the American male becomes extinct; replaced by a sobbing reality TV loser of "Design Star". My GOD what happened to this country?!?

Personally, I'd prefer a president that isn't so goddamn stupid as to assault a foreign official at a diplomatic reception. (Unless you're planning on getting him to wrestle Putin for anti-missile defense, of course.)

And before you get high and mighty about the Sandinistas, remember that the US government was doing a pretty good job of supporting the Contras, who were responsible for "cold-bloodedly butchering thousands of its own citizens" themselves.

17. Wow, I didn't realize that there are still people in this day and age who think with their testicles. I knew that McCain has a bad temper, but I didn't realize that he was such a Neanderthal.

Losing your temper is OK if you live in a world where personal physical violence works. Unfortunately, we left that world behind a long time ago. We have machines, and technology, and billions of people, and the thumping your chest doesn't accomplish much against a guy with nukes. Sure, that guy may not have pecs as large as yours, but if he pushes the button, you and yours are vaporized. Bill Gates is a nerd, and I'll bet every one of you could beat him to a pulp, but he's a lot richer than any of you. So go ahead, beat on your chests, talk big, swagger, and proclaim that your penises are larger than those of people you disagree with. You're still losers. Rationalism crushed testosterone a long time ago.

Go re-read the story. The incident happened in 1987. That's 20 years ago for the math impaired. It's not like he did it just last week.

Maybe you should re-read this part.

(I try to picture a man that cant' lift his arms above his shoulders attacking someone)

McCain POW days has left him a little out of shape when it comes to fighting or jerking someone around.

Posted by: Army Medic/Vet on July 3, 2008 10:38 AM
21. Ken notes that the event took place 20 years ago. I assume that by this he means that it is no longer relevant. I disagree. If it were an isolated incident, I'd be happy to dismiss it as a fluke, but we have lots of evidence that Mr. McCain has a bad temper. That's dangerous in a President.

Army Medic/Vet seems to suggest that the report is false because Mr. McCain is physically incapable of attacking somebody. I'm happy to entertain the possibility that the report was false. Was it ever denied? Was there any corroboration? In any event, comments such as The fact that McCain has/had a tendency to go all Robert Mitchum in a film noir movie by roughing up communists for some reason doesn't seem that troublesome. suggest that readers here approve of such behavior. That's what I criticize: the approval of uncivilized behavior.

Subject: Presidential Temperament

Please talk about and "Compare And Contrast" the " Presidential Temperament" of our Presidential presumptive nominees. I will also request and plead to the nominees themselves [ Hon. Senator McCain and Obama ].
Our nation has been applying this yard and stick tor the appointments and confirmation process of our Supreme Court Justices nominees.
Our Greatgrand Nation Foundations are as under:
Family, friends, fellows, faith, funds, fun, with fairness & freedom And without fear, favor, and failure.
It will be disgrace and shameful if the nominees and media will not look into this critical and crucial aspect under current challenging times and circumstances within our country and all around the Globe.

America wake up and the discuss the " Presidential Temperament" of our presumptive presidential nominee's [ Hon. Senator McCain and Obama].

Yours sincerely,

33. Does anyone notice the way the lefties on this thread practically celebrate the communists in criticizing McCain? C'mon guys, why don't you just declare you want world communism instead of beating around the "Bush", or "McCain" as it were. Your hero Harry "Limpy" Reid is just the man...errr...person to lead you. Mr. "stop burning coal and oil because it makes us sick" can't wait to force us all onto run down trains and busses just like the "mother country" Russia. If Harry has his way with coal and oil, getting "sick" will be the least of our worries.

34. #33 - I agree. It appears that the Obama-ists have all thrown principles under the bus. I am not sure how much I believe Thad Cocoran's rendition of the 1987 visit to Nicaragua. Just because he is an R, doesn't mean he is truthful there. It makes for good copy but facts are sometimes elusive things.

I wish that McCain would start being McCain more in this campaign. He seems somewhat muzzled and don't think that is serving anyone's best interests. Michael Murphy would be someone good for him to listen to and hopefully his campaign strategy will evolve and he will be able to radiate more optimism and confidence and watch Ronald Reagan campaign films. Obama's optimism is thinly veiled - if he goes into any depth, one sees that he is pessimistic and believes Government is the answer, like Jimmy Carter. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth.

This country was begun because of over taxation, and it is time to take it back.

36. I have two observations for your consideration:

1. As to the suggestion that Mr. McCain should take off the gloves and show his true conservative colors, I rather like that idea -- because it would surely lead to a landslide victory for Mr. Obama, demonstrating how completely the American people reject the conservative philosophy.

2. As to taxation issues, I agree that Mr. Obama will raise taxes -- it's the only rational course because we are in deep deficit. While it is a commonplace to denounce liberals as 'tax and spend' politicians, Mr. Bush has turned out to be a 'don't tax but keep spending' politician -- which is even worse. The primary task facing our government is to lower spending, and the best way to do that is to eliminate the biggest discretionary component of our spending: the war in Iraq. Terminating that war will alone save more money than the increases implicit in ALL the spending proposals offered by Mr. Obama. In short, Mr. Obama is proposing to shut down a fiscally disastrous war and use part of the savings to fund domestic programs.

Posted by: Chris Crawford on July 4, 2008 07:39 AM
37. 36. You have conveniently forgotten how much more Obama will spend on universal Health Care (which includes 15 million illegal aliens), medicare and billions funneled to the UN to fight worldwide poverty. These alone will vastly increase the size of Government and he showed interest in the expansion of Bush's Faith Based initiative - which I believed was a mistake in the first place. He'll have to raise taxes just to keep pace with the increased spending for growing more Government. Throw in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars vs. Radical Islam and watch the dollar keep dropping and fuel prices rise. Yes, he may end the Iraq war prematurely - however he is waffling on that now, and even if he did that pales in the amount of spending for domestic programs - health care, medicare not to mention social security and fighting worldwide poverty. That may give you and the Obama-collectivists, a warm feeling coming up your leg in the name of ignorance, but it scares the bejeezus out of those who understand the astronomic spending he is proposing and that he will be the third term of Bush when it comes to increased spending, with a liberal slant.

The message is clear-a recession will become a reality with your guy. McCain voted for a balanced budget amendment back in 1998, but the Republican who kept it from passing was Mark Hatfield _ R, OR. I'll trust a veteran centrist who has worked with both sides over a neophyte leftist in anything that involves fiscal and security.

Posted by: KS on July 4, 2008 09:41 AM
38. Yes, he may end the Iraq war prematurely - however he is waffling on that now, and even if he did that pales in the amount of spending for domestic programs

The cumulative cost of the Iraq War is now up to at least $2 trillion. That's roughly $400 million per year. If Mr. Obama winds down the war three years before Mr. McCain does, then he will have saved us $1.2 trillion. Are you claiming that Mr. Obama's domestic spending proposals exceed $1.2 trillion?

Posted by: Chris Crawford on July 4, 2008 01:41 PM
39. Are you claiming that Mr. Obama's domestic spending proposals exceed $1.2 trillion?

YES. Universal Health Care (insuring 15 million illegal aliens) and Medicare alone will exceed that amount.

Posted by: KS on July 4, 2008 02:20 PM
40. #38 - you are also making the false assumption about military spending that he would save $1.2 Trillion in Iraq. There will be billions spent even if we pulled out of Iraq. There will be bases there that will have to be financed. Also, don't forget the $745 billion that Obama has pledged to the UN to fight worldwide poverty - while McCain has never pledged anything.

Posted by: KS on July 4, 2008 02:30 PM
41. @34 "I agree. It appears that the Obama-ists have all thrown principles under the bus."

...And McCain and Bush and Co. have thrown our distinguished American Soldiers under the bus for the last 7 years with their illegal war. I say, anyone dumb enough and cold-hearted enough to vote for McCain should be arrested and tried for conspiracy to commit murder. You're animals who have no respect for country or for the families of our fallen.

Posted by: Ron Paul for Obama on July 4, 2008 05:17 PM
42. @39 - Even if that figure of 1.2T were true, then what you're saying is that we should spend it blowing up other countries instead of helping to improve our own country? Where is the logic in this?

Posted by: Ron Paul for Obama on July 4, 2008 05:22 PM
43. #42 - I'd like to see us leave Iraq within the next two years, but as a victor not in a cut and run fashion. Do you believe we don't need a National defense ?

"I say, anyone dumb enough and cold-hearted enough to vote for McCain should be arrested and tried for conspiracy to commit murder. "

You are off of your meds and are spewing nonsense. With that appalling misinformation, you really shouldn't vote. McCain did not get us in this war, silly. McCain had no more to do with us getting in the war than John Kerry or Hillary Clinton. Bush did and he has left it to the next president to have us win and then leave.

Posted by: KS on July 4, 2008 05:35 PM
44. Actually, Chris Matthews fellates McCain every time he's on. Me I'm voting for Bob Barr this year... an election of McCain would mean a significant shift in the Republican Party away from the conservative philosophy that brought me to it in the first place. Obama will screw up making way for a real R in 2012.

Posted by: Bernbaum on July 5, 2008 02:13 PM
45. That's one theory. Bob Barr is a non-entity and a phony conservative. He worked for the ACLU after he lost in GA in 2000 and did not slow them down from enfringing on our rights during that time. Furthermore, a vote for him will only help to get Obama elected.

There is no guarantee that even if a conservative R gets elected in 2012 that he will be able to undo the freedoms that an Obama administration will taken away from us, as he will expand Government and get us linked in with the World Court and Global Governance, not to mention do-nothing about oil drilling or nuclear power here and continue social engineering in an attempt to get us out of our cars and tax and spend us into oblivion with his new programs.

McCain is not the ideal candidate, but can you tell me who ever was ? It's all about the lesser of two evils nowadays and would hope that you rethink your position between now and November and vote for someone who has a real chance to win.

46. Marxism pushed by Republicans is still Marxism, and looking at Juan McCain's Plan to stop Global Warming (which of course doesn't really exist) is Marxism to the core. And since Republicans are perceived to be pro-business he can "go to china" in ways where Overt Marxist Obama can't. McCain can slowly turn up the heat on the pot whereas Obama would most likely turn up the heat way too fast making the frog jump out of the pot.

Now if we are talking temperament, I want to know if McCain's temperament was responsible for the worse single casualty event the Navy suffered during Vietnam. That is the 1967 disaster aboard the USS Forrestal resulting in the Deaths of 134 soldiers.

There has been some credible claims that this was caused by McCain "Wet starting" his A4. "Wet Starting" was a dangerous process that young hot shot pilots often did.

Also it is a historical fact that McCain while he was a pilot lost five airplanes. If you wonder why this needs to be brought up,it is because McCain has brought up his military service in his campaign.

Lots of American Vets have come out as strongly against McCain as they did Kerry. And it seems like they have a good reason to do so.

And This video shows why so many Vietnam Vets don't support him.

As for the Forrestal disaster it is possible that the whole thing was an accident, just an electrical failure but why was McCain transferred immediately from the Forrestal?
